Discussion: ‘Don’t Judge a book by its cover’

August 7, 2014 Posted by angelreads Discussions 8 Comments

You know that saying ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover?’ Everyone should know it, everyone says it and everyone does it.

Beautiful covers always capture our attention, or maybe it’s something particular on the cover that pulls you. Each and everyone one of us has something that without a second thought will make our eyes travel towards that book. Then you will pick the book up read the synopsis and then decided how you feel about the book, if you think you will like it or not.

Dreeams of God and Monsters

You may not fully judge a book by its cover, but you still do in a way. A cover is meant to attract readers, if you have a gorgeous or interesting book cover someone is going to pick it up. If you have a, let’s just say it because we all know it’s true; an ugly and dull cover in front of you, most people will not pick it up. Even if it is one of the most amazing books written. But then you can get gorgeous covered books with dull content. You can never know unless you pick up the book, read the synopsis and (if you like that) read the book.

Yes, don’t judge a book as a whole by its cover, but covers are, for the most part, what a reader will see first. No one should judge a book by its cover, but people do without even realising it. You are looking at shelves upon shelves of books and what is the book that catches your eye? The one with bright colours will be picked up first.

The phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ is true. You shouldn’t judge a book by what it looks like. But it is difficult not to. You don’t know what the inside is going to be until you start reading it.

I know that it is hard not to judge books by the cover because is what our brain just does, so I say don’t be ashamed about doing it. It just happens. All I say is if you see a cover that catches you attention, pick it up, read the synopsis and think about if you will like it. That is all that you can do really.

Winnere

The saying is something that every reader, or any person, will always have on the back of their mind and yes, it does have some truth.

In the end it does happen and I think that the saying is just a saying, that is it. Don’t be ashamed about going straight to a book with a nice cover. It happens and no one should be judge you for it. Because in the end they will do it too, maybe without even realising.

What do you think about the saying? What is it about covers that grabs you attention?

I have to say, I am guilty of judging books by their covers. ANd there are some great books that I think could have attracted readers just purely by the covers!
I do like seeing consistency in lighting (for photo covers anyway) and texture. As well as something that makes me question things, like why on earth is there are broken lightbulb on the cover? (for example) covers that have images that make me question why it’s there or gives me a sense of mystery. That way I feel intrigued to read the book rather than if I just see a generic cover of a girl’s face and some title. Not to say they aren’t good, but I think covers are there to help advertise the book as well, both online and in the shop and I like covers that have had time and thought put into them because then it makes me think, well it must be a good book because look at how much they value what their book looks like.
    Anyway that’s my ramblings,
    and also
DON’T GIVE AWAY THE PLOT ON THE BACK COVER!!! That makes me sad because then I feel like it’s been spoiled for me already, also blurbs need to do the same as the cover, create intrigue and mystery!!!!

I don’t know what it is about covers that grabs my attention…but I do know that with some of my favourites series, I didn’t read them for years purely and simply because I didn’t like the cover.
And I’ve read books because of their cover, and I’ve hated them.
Some books have not-so-great covers, but great stories. Others have great covers, but not-so-great stories.
And sometimes, you get an amazing cover with an amazing story. And those books get a place of honour on the bookshelf.

I definitely judge books by their covers, and half the time I don’t mind that I do that. Buuut, I do feel guilty sometimes because authors don’t make their covers! So therefore the cover isn’t really a reflection of the author’s style and writing quality is it?!! So then I feel guilty. >-< But it's hard not too! i like pretty things on my bookshelves and I like carrying around gorgeous books. It inspires me to, like, make blog banners or post them on instagram. So pretty covers are definitely a win for me.

Fantastic post, Angel! It is hard not to judge a book by a cover. That’s one thing I like about book blogging, you can see reviews for books that may have an unfortunate cover, but if the reviewer is saying good things about the book, then it makes you want to pick it up despite the cover. (if it’s something you’re interested in, of course.) I’m not sure what it is about a cover that makes me want to pick it up, but some of my favourite covers from this year have been Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige and The Winners Curse by Marie Rutkoski. Also, having unfortunate covers was something that stopped me from picking up the VA series for so long, (although the title is a bit unfortunate too), however what I’ve read so far of the series has been amazing! Which reminds me, I really need to finish off the last 4 books so I can start Bloodlines! I also want to read her Georgina Kincaid series, and they don’t have the nicest covers either.

I agree! I’m not a person who’s ashamed to admit that they judge a book by its cover because I know I do and there’s no point in denying it. Just imagine if all books were bland or they all had the same colour. There would be no individuality and nothing that draws me to the book. I also think covers reflect what the authors are trying to convey in the story.

It’s funny because you can relate it to meeting new people. First impression is important (but of course it’s not everything) because that’s the image that is held in your mind. Maybe humans are just naturally attracted to pretty things coz I know I am!

Great discussion, it’s so true! I judge books by their covers and I’m not ashamed to say it.

Attractive covers definitely do one thing for us – it catches our attention and makes it stand out from all the rest of the books, and that’s why we spend so much money in aesthetics. And if you think about it, that’s why the fashion, makeup and beauty industry is blooming, because people judge from people’s looks, so it isn’t really different about books as well. Great topic lovely!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
