Discussion: ‘I Read the book before you!’

December 8, 2014 Posted by angelreads Discussions 8 Comments

I haven’t seen it happen recently but I have seen it happen a lot in the past few years and that is people slamming and putting down others for not reading book when they come out or only reading it because of ‘hype.’

It’s has been going on for years especially with all these book to movie adaptations coming out, it’s rude and so annoying. I hear it all the time ‘I was a fan before the movie’, ‘I read the book as soon as it came out’, ‘you just read the book because of the movie’, ‘I read the book before you’ and so on.

I just don’t comprehend why people put down others and what fun they get out of it, but it hurts people’s feelings. Some people don’t reads books and if after watching a book to movie adaptation they want to go buy and read the book, they shouldn’t be ashamed.

People shouldn’t be ashamed for reading books especially if they normally don’t read books.  People likewise should not be putdown when they read a book that according to some people are just reading it to follow a ‘trend’ or because of the ‘hype’ but what these people don’t understand is that is how books get popular, how authors get popular and how books selling thrives

Books need hype so it’s just not reviewers reading them but readers that are not ‘all into’ the world of books like we are as well as none readers. If books make the top 10 then people are more likely going to pick it up and read it.  It is how everything works in this world.

It’s saddening to hear and see that people have the nerve to put down people who have read the book late. Because at some point they would have been in the opposite situation and would be the one getting shamed.

Furthermore I understand that some people do get attached to certain books and don’t want others to read it nonetheless the more people who read is glorious for our community. More people need to read and whatever way they are drawn to the book should not matter. They can get an ARC, read it as soon as it comes out or even months after when there I so much hype surrounding the book. But people are reading.

I didn’t read The Hunger Games until I heard about the movie, at the time I wasn’t in the blogging community, I was 11/12 and didn’t read the books until just before the first movie came out. I didn’t get hate directly but I did see it around and not only did it make me angry but upset as well. People should be praised for reading, as not many people do it nowadays but instead people are getting loathed for reading books so ‘late.’

edit

I don’t really see it around bloggers all that much but I do see it more with booktubers. I am not hating on them or anything but I do noticed that when some are talking about certain books they have to mention, that they were a fan from the start or before the movie or hype even started and there is no need for it. It doesn’t just hurt people’s feelings but it also makes the person look bad. They may not have intended to hurt people but sometimes comments like that do.

I wouldn’t normally talk about something like this but I have just witnessed it too much of it. Have you ever been slammed down for reading books when they have been ‘hype’ or after the movies has come out? Am I the only one that has noticed this or do you guys feel the same way?

I see this happen a lot in the Harry Potter fandom. The ‘true fans’ are the one’s who have been there since the beginning.
They don’t seem to understand that some of us were to young to start reading them as soon as they came out. When the first Harry Potter movie came out, I was 6! I couldn’t read novels back then. I was 12 or 13 when I first read the Harry Potter series, and I consider myself a ‘true fan’.
Though really, the concept of a ‘true fan’ is ridiculous.
As for the ‘you only read it because of the movie’, I often discover books because of the movie. So, technically, yes, I read it because of the movie, but that’s because without the movie I never would have heard of it.
Take Vampire Academy for example. I read that because the movie was coming out and I like to read the book before seeing the movie.
Look at me now, completely obsessed, and desperately waiting for Ruby Circle.

I think the problem is that people seem to think that your ‘fan classification’ depends on how you discovered the book. They don’t seem to realise that unless you go looking, it is actually really, really hard to discover books that haven’t been hyped. I read Twilight because of the hype. I read The Hunger Games because of the hype. I read Divergent because of the hype. I did not have twitter or even Goodreads when I first discovered these. So, naturally, I gravitated towards the ones that other people were reading, because I like to know what people are talking about.

Ok, I wasn’t expecting to write this much…rant over.

OMG I LOVE THIS POST WITH ALL MY HEART, ALRIGHT???! <3

You've said it all, m'dear. It's horrendous and demeaning and urgh. I don't understand what they get from it either? Validation? Is that it? We're all reading. I LOVE the idea of adaptations attracting readers. Honestly, not enough people are picking up fiction nowadays, at least not to the extent of the past centuries. AND if movies are drawing people back in, piquing curiosity and whatnot then I say HELL YES. BRING IT ON. I'd heard all the hype surrounding Gone Girl before the movie but never felt compelled. Now that I have watched the movie, I can't wait to pick up the book. And I'm proud that that has happened. YOU'RE SO RIGHT. AT LEAST WE'RE ALL READING! <3

Hmm, if anything I think people who join the fandoms because of the movie are great! Because it’s expanding who you can talk and fangirl/fanguy to about the movie and the series and rather than hating, we should all be welcoming!
Thanks for the post Angel! I always love to encourage new people to fandoms to read the books and I love being introduced to new fandoms and read the books too. PRAISE FOR THIS POST!!! 😀

Fantastic post, Angel! You’re so right – people shouldn’t put others down for reading no matter when they read the book.

It’s actually quite ridiculous how people get so crazy over this!!! People take being a fan to the extreme and I think everyone needs to calm down. Even I’m guilty of thinking like this and I think it’s the sense of being a fan before everyone else that gives you that thrill. It’s pride that gets in the way of people seeing clearly. We’re all fans, some just later than others. I was like you and didn’t read Hunger Games until there was major hype around it.

Great post Angel, I hope more people will see this so everyone can take a chill pill.

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

IT’S RACE WEEK! 🏎️ If you didn’t know al IT’S RACE WEEK! 🏎️

If you didn’t know already I love F1, have ever since I was younger and decided that this year it would be fun to combined my love for F1 and reading together. 📚

After a week off we are back at it. We are in Miami this week’s and things are only just heating up. This week I’m reading Falling Off the Cliff Kanitha P.

…

Formula 1 legend in the making and rising star Thiago Valencia is chasing redemption as well as his second World Champion title. With a tarnished reputation and an undetermined future in F1 that hangs by a terribly loose thread, he can’t afford to lose his seat. Thiago is ready to do anything to redeem himself and erase his past mistakes. When a mysterious woman intrudes on his private party in Monte Carlo, he is certain the universe has brought his polar opposite into his life as salvation. He is sunshine, she is moonlight; he is a bright star and she is a moonbeam.

Destiny takes the wheel, steering Kamari into Thiago’s orbit, but her open disdain and closely guarded heart warn her to stay away. Enchanted by her charms, Thiago is intent on melting her freezing barriers and tearing down the walls shielding her heart.

When Kamari agrees to help him save his future by being his fake girlfriend, the unexpected happens, triggered by a game of lies, secrets and desire.

As they plunge towards the finish line, the race veers offtrack and neither of them are ready to fall off the cliff.
…

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
