Six Books I Enjoyed Recently That Weren’t My Typical Genre

TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. All bloggers are then welcomed to join. This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is: Top Ten (Six) Books I Enjoyed Recently That Weren’t My Typical Genre.

So I typically don’t read out of the genre I like, simply because I hate 1. Not finishing a book and 2. Not liking a book. It makes me so sad, so I don’t normally go away from supernatural/fantasy and contemporary. There is mostly a mixture of historical fiction and science fiction in this list.

Salt To Sea by Ruta Sepetys: I adored this book. It was just so beautiful, I had been crying and turning page after page. Salt to the Sea is a gorgeous novel that brings to light a catastrophe that seems to be forgotten. With stunning writing and intriguing characters Ruta Sepetys brings a novel that tells a story that everyone needs to read. | My Review

Salt to Sea Quote Top Six

These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly: I was very sure about this book when I heard about it, but it also intrigued me. However, These Shallow Graves, it was an interesting read and something that I would recommend to historical fiction or crime lovers. These Shallow Graves is a fantastic historical fiction packed with crime solving, romance, heartbreak and tears.| My Review

Who’s Afraid?  by Maria Lewis: Normally this would be my thing, however it was an adult/new adult novel and I was so not expecting it. However,  I really enjoyed Who’s Afraid? It was something different from what I have read before. I am used to Fantasy in Young Adult, this is one of the New Adult novels that I have read that isn’t contemporary. I truly enjoyed and cannot wait to read the rest of the books in the series. | My Review

Who's Afraid ? Quote Top Six

Lux Series by Jennifer L. Arementrout: This is one of the first alien books that I have ever read and I really, really enjoyed it. This book had so much that I adored. The romance is adorable and the plot is so intriguing that had me finish the series in less than a week.

The Next Together by Lauren James: Again one of the first time travel books that I have read. And I really enjoyed it. At first it was difficult to get my head around it, but one I got into the book it as really intruding and fun.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer: This is one of my favourite series of all time. I love the character’s, the plot, the writing. This series is so different from what I am used to. It has androids, cyborgs and people who live on the moon. It’s pretty awesome if I say so myself.

Cinder Quote Top Six

And that is it for this weeks Top Ten Tuesday well in my case Six. What books have you read in the last year that were out of your comfort zone? Do we have any of the same? Do you love genre’s that I haven’t read much of? Can you give me some suggestions on what I should read from them? I hope you enjoyed this Top Six Tuesday.

Ooh, you read some great books here! I absolutely LOVE THE LUNAR CHRONICLES; they’re actually one of my favourite series. I’m SO curious about THESE SHALLOW GRAVES. I’m not usually into historical novels (with some exceptions, though; I loved SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY by Susan Dennard), but I really enjoy mysteries.

AHHH I LOVED THE LUNAR CHRONICLES! Although I knew that was my thing from the start. XD I have to admit, I so so very rarely read outside my comfort zone. :O I’m a bit of a wuss. XD But life is short?!? I want to read books I’ll enjoy?! So I tend to just stick with YA and I mostly like all the genres…*nods* Although I DID recently read a memoir about mental illness called Furiously Happy and it was SO SO GOOD. Zero regrets about trying that one. :’)

What a wonderful list, Angel! It’s always a great feeling when you fall in love with a book that’s out of your comfort zone. 🙂 I’m so happy to see Salt to the Sea and These Shallow Graves on this list, as their two that I can’t wait to read! I also need to get my butt into gear and finish off both the Lux series and the Lunar Chronicles!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
