Discussion: Same World Authors

Discussion: Same World Authors

Discussion

The one thing I hate more than people rating/reviewing books before they have read them, is when people hate on authors for writing in the same universe/world.

Ever since it was announced that Cassandra Clare would be writing more series in the Shadowhunter universe (The Dark Artifices  and The Last Hours) people have gone mental. I have seen so much hate towards her on Goodreads and other platforms – that she should not be writing more books in this world, that she is only doing it for the money and that it is all the same. As a writer and reader this makes my blood boil.

However, the thing is I haven’t just seen it with Clare, recently I have seen hate angled towards Rick Riordan with the announcement that he is writing a new series in the same world as his other books.

Same World Authors Image

I seriously don’t understand, why this concerns some people. You are not the author, no one is forcing you to read it, so why hate on someone.

There are many reasons as to why I am totally okay, with authors writing in that same world;

1.They are the author! If the author decides they want to write in the same world, then I say good on them. They can do whatever they like. They are the ones writing the books, so they can do whatever they want.

Maybe they like the world so much, and they have so many ideas and characters, that they cannot fit into one series. Both Clare and Riordan have been writing for quite a while and they both know what they are doing.

2. The author’s world isn’t all we see. When an author starts creating a world – they don’t just create the one that we read, they create so much more and sometimes, those characters and stories need to be heard.

3. They could be contacted to write a certain amount of book. Sometimes authors have contracts for a certain amount of books and I can bet you anything that some of these authors are contracted to write books in the same world. Publishers know that they will make money off them.

4. Money. This is a massive thing that I am seeing. That, all the author wants to do is to make money. But the thing is, you kind of need money to survive in this world and if an author knows that people like a world so much that they will get money from it – they why not. Why not make money from doing something that you love.

5. People want it. Even though I am writing this post about people hating on same world authors, there are so many people who would read these books. There are people who want more. They are so invested into the characters that, they will take anything from the world.

When I see people hate on these authors, my blood boils. Not because I like them or their world, but because I think it’s unfair that people are doing this. They could easily not comment about it. They could leave it alone.  But no, they have to say their opinion, which isn’t an opinion, but more of a hateful comment.

No one is forcing them to go online or a book shop and buy the book. No one is forcing them to read it. No one is doing anything that would make the person need to say that the author shouldn’t be writing in the same world.

Furthermore, sometimes they say that the books are all the same. I am seeing it quite a bit with Cassandra Clare, anyone can back me up on this, her latest novel Lady Midnight, is nothing like her previous books – I also think that both her other series are different too.

Nevertheless, it is all up to the author; they are the ones writing the books, promoting the books, creating the world – They can do what they like.

What do you think of all this? Lets Chat.

I really don’t get ppl who whine about more books in the series or spin off series.
No one is forcing you to read it, so don’t read it.
But don’t talk bad thing about it if you don’t even want to read it.

I, for example, would be beyond happy if Richelle Mead decided to write more books in her Vampire Academy world!
I understand the feeling fans have when their favorite author continue to write about their favorite characters, or just in the same world. I would never, ever ruin their happiness with mean comments.

If you don’t like the fact that there are more books coming from a certain author guess what: you don’t have to read them, don’t have to buy them, you don’t have to talk about them. You can just ignore them.

Here are my two cents: It’s okay if you get annoyed by author’s writing in the same world, but that doesn’t mean you have to bitch about it. Nobody is making you read it. Move on, let the fans that love the books enjoy it and move on to books you want to read instead of bashing books you clearly don’t want to.

I admit to being annoyed in the past that she was writing ANOTHER book in the shadowunter world (I’ve read 4 books in one series and 2 of the other series) but then I realized that it doesn’t affect me so I shouldn’t care. I even got the audiobook of Lady Midnight to give it a shot because I remember loving TMI.

Readers will find anything to complain about…

I don’t get it either. I mean I personally LOVE it! Of course given the fact I’m currently marathoning all of Gail Carriger’s books – three series in the same world – and I’m still craving more of that world… That might give you an idea. Like you said they create SO MUCH that we might not see that it is just fun to be able to fully explore it. Esp – I haven’t read them since the first three but – with authors like Cassandra Clare the series are based at different times in history which make it more interesting than just the same time but even then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Like others said though. If you don’t like it? Move on. It’s as simple as that

I completely agree. Like you said, no one is forcing you to read it. Seriously, there are SOOOOO many books out there. If you’re not happy with the way one was written (for whatever reason) then don’t read it. Easy as that. No one is forcing you to. No one is judging you for not reading it. So why are you judging the author for writing it the way they chose? Obviously there are others out there that ARE happy with it, so let them enjoy it and move on your way. I swear, people will find absolutely anything to complain about. It’s really sad, actually. Great post!

Yeah, I really don’t get why people would hate on authors for this. I mean, if the author is great, then you should look forward to their stuff regardless of the world. I have never read either one of these authors, but I have heard great things about both of them. And honestly, writing is hard enough. It is a brutal process. Authors should be able to write about whatever they damn well please. Great discussion post!

I feel that, at some point or another, the author is going to realize they have to stop. If they’re extending a trilogy into eight books, eventually a). everything is going to end up feeling repetitive or b). the author is going to run out of ideas. I feel the author should stop the story when it needs to be stopped. If there’s no more to the story, then there’s no reason to write any more. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous discussion! ♥

I completely agree, authors who write in the same worlds should be left to their own devices, because obviously those books are for their fans. I do think they get pretty repetitive at times, but you know what, kudos to the author for writing whatever they want. This is a great discussion post Angel!

I get annoyed all the time about THINGS, but I rarely ever put it out there what it is that annoys me. I just don’t read the books, or I don’t follow the blogger or author. Life would be a lot nicer if people learned that it’s okay to sometimes NOT share your every opinion with the world. Just go and bitch to your- mom, boyfriend, husband, wife, girlfriend, friend, dog- about it.

I can kind of see it both ways. Not that I’m “annoyed” with authors who stick with the same worlds. It’s more that if I really like the author then I think it would be cool if they branched out and did something completely new. I want to see what else they create. Honestly, I’ve been saying for years I would LOVE Tamora Piece to move away from Emelan or Tortall. I think it would be fun!

    YES YES YES.

I’ve always been of the opinion that if an author has more stories to tell, then he/she should tell those stories. So what if they’re set in the same world? The characters are different, and so is the general story. Take Cassie’s new series for example – sure, it may be set in the world of Shadowhunters, but it’s so DIFFERENT. And like what you said, NO ONE is forcing you to read the new series. Just let the fans be happy, right?

Thanks for this insightful discussion, Angel!

You have brought up good points. The author is free to write what he/she wants (unless they are writing biography full of hateful lies about real living people, that I consider unethical) and if they are lucky to have enthusiastic fanbase AND get publishing contract then it’s great. Absolutely.

But a reader needs some freedom, too. Freedom to express their concerns. I admit some reviews are worded very harshly, not that there aren’t authors who can speak just as sharply if they feel like it. *snicker* And if they have a place special designed to talk about books, well, they cover all possible topics.

I get that people tend to get tired of things they see/hear too often. It’s not just a hyped franchise though, the same goes for social topics and, as you and some people in comments section demonstrated, even certain opinions about their hobbies. But everyone explores a thing at their own pace and a blog or reading network account is supposed to be a safe space.

If you ever again read something that you feel like rolling your eyes at, go on, sigh and complain about it on your blog. But also allow yourself to feel good for giving someone your time. They said something someone said before perhaps but they felt the urge to say it with their own words, an urge to be listened to. And you gave them the time, that alone means they didn’t write it in vain.

The phrase ‘don’t like, don’t read’ may have served well in the past but it’s worn out nowadays. In school you have to read material you have no idea if you will like. Even picking a free time read is a gamble. A blurb may name a trope or two but it is still as different from the actual text like a beaver from a dragon. What’s more you need different book in different stages of your life. I’m not talking about middle grade being only for small kids and that adults adoring YA literature are immature morons. Psht, not in the least. But there are people who get tired of things they used to love. Suddenly and then they discover new genres, new tropes having no idea they will like it beforehand. And sometimes they don’t. Life is crazy. *shrug*

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
