Top Ten Books I Wish Had More Action

Top Ten Books I Wish Had More Action

February 7, 2017 Posted by angelreads Features, Top Ten Tuesday 10 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone join as you please. This week’s topic is: Top Ten Books I Wish Had More Action.

This week was half freebie, where we got to choose what we wished had more/less of something. I picked action, I looking picking up a book and turning page after page because everything is happening. So here are a list of books that I wished had more action.

TTT Action 1

And I Darken by Kristen White: This was one of my favourite books that I read last year. But, many people didn’t like it and I understand why. It’s very character driven and there did need to be more action. Full Review

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake: Much like And I Darken – this book is very character driven, but at times it really let it down and I was waiting for something big to happen. Full Review

Who’s Afraid Too? by Maria Lewis: I really enjoyed reading this one, but like I said in my review I needed a little more action. More at the edge of my seat – what is going to happen next. Full Review

TTT Action 2

Caraval by Stephanie Garber: This is one of those so/so books. The concept was interesting, I enjoyed the characters – but the payoff wasn’t the best. I think there needed to be a little more action at certain moments and more intensity. Full Review

The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles: I enjoyed reading this one, I didn’t love it. But, I did feel that there was action missing. It’s like it was off the edge of a cliff just handing – not going anywhere. Full review coming soon.

Long Way Home by Katie McGarry: Again another one that just needed a little push. There was action, plenty of it, it just needed that little bit more. Full Review

TTT Action 3

Heartless by Marissa Meyer: One of my most disappointed books that I read last year. It was slow, and nothing really happened until the last 50 of so pages. Full Review

Moon Chosen by P.C Cast: This is one of those books that I liked and disliked all at the same time. And one of the things I disliked was how character driven it was – plus it was way too long. Whole chapters could have bene removed and action added in. Full Review

Firewalker by Josephine Angeline: Now I really enjoyed this book, a lot. But, I felt that it is the weakest in the series. Especially the first half. I was left hanging for more. Full Review

TTT Action 3

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye: This wasn’t my favourite book out there. I was just expected so much more and I got pretty waited and dresses. I was expected literally fighting to the death – and that happened sorta. Full Review.

And that is it for this week. Do you agree with any of the books that I have mentioned? Do you disagree? Let’s Chat!

I definitely agree with you on Three Dark Crowns, I thought more was going to happen with the trials and everything. I liked how character driven the book was, although I can definitely see why some people might not like that aspect. That seems to be a common comment.

I’m trying to read The Edge of Everything now and I’m really struggling!! I feel like all the action happened right in the beginning and NOW WHAT??? I like your spin on this topic 🙂

I agree with Three Dark Crowns! It took a long time for the events to build up and there wasn’t even any real action going on.
I didn’t like Heartless as much for the same reason. For the first half it was all pastries, family problems, boy problems, I was looking for the same balance of action and conflict that was there in The Lunar Chronicles.

I didn’t feel the same way about Three Dark Crowns, Caraval or The Crown’s Game as you did (I guess I’m okay with character driven plot as long as I dig the characters/writing/setting? Or maybe I’m less observant… which in all likelihood is the reason) but I just finished Heartless and I was sooooooooooo disappointed in it. It took so long for things to happen, and even when the action happened, I just didn’t care because I wasn’t invested in the characters. And I tried with P.C. Cast- the House of Night series- because she’s from Oklahoma and I lived there for a time, but I read most of them before I started blogging, otherwise I never would have wasted my time. I don’t have the heart to read anymore Cast books.

    Great topic!

Ou yes, And I Darken would’ve been even better with some more action! I surprisingly haven’t read anything else on this list – and they’re all pretty well known books. I should change that lol.

I really enjoyed Caraval, but I do agree that certain moments needed more action!

Definitely agree Three Dark Crowns needed a LOT more action. I was expecting it to be a lot darker and more violent than it was :/

Caraval and And I Darken were alright with their level of action for me personally. I did expect the scavenger hunt and ending of Caraval to be a bit more intense than it was, but that might come in the sequel?

All the other books on this list I have yet to read.

I agree about three dark crowns – as much as I enjoyed it I just wanted something… more. And I’m about 1/5 of the way into Moon chosen, so far its been tough going since everything seems very long winded. I really hope it picks up soon…. Great post, thanks for sharing!

I also loved And I Darken, but it wouldn’t have hurt it to have more action.

Of these books I’ve only read the Crowns Game but I definitely agree that it needed more action, Whilst I enjoy the book and liked the craftmanship of their magic I too expected magic wielding battles at some point.

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
