Favourite Summer Reads | Discussion

February 15, 2018 Posted by angelreads Discussions, Recommendations 2 Comments

I love summer. I like when it’s warm and I can go to the beach chill in the water and read a book. Or when it’s hot, hang out by the aircon and just read. What makes reading in summer even better is picking up a book that reflects the mood.

So today I thought I would share some of my favourite summer reads. There are some that fit that summer theme – and others that are a little out of the book.

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson: One of the first Morgan Matson books that I read that made me want to read more. Second Chance Summer will pull at your heartstrings, but will also make you smile, laugh and just fall in love. It’s beautiful but heartbreaking summer read.

This Beats Perfect by Rebecca Denton: I read this on a cruise I went on last year and it just a perfect summer read. It was fun, addicting and put a smile on my face. It explores the notions of finding yourself, loving what you do and finding those who will stand by you. It’s about family, friendship and those you love

Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally: Basically, the whole Hundred Oaks series are perfect summer reads. They are fun contemporary reads that both emotional, but also lots of fun.  They are great for a nice summer binge read. And if you love sports these are so much fun.

Game On by Michelle Smith: Another fun sports romance that takes you on a ride. It’s full of everything; family, friends to lovers and small town. This one is great to read through in one sitting. Maybe one by the beach in summer.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson:  I loved The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson. It is a tale of friendship, family, love and unexpected adventures that all feels real. The Unexpected Everything is for every author, book lover and reader alike. It’s a beautiful story of friendship, heartbreak and family. Morgan Matson brings together a beautiful contemporary novel that makes you smile, laugh and cry.

The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West: I just love Kasie West. I love her writing, her plots, her characters. And of course her romances. A lot of people have a love-hate relationship with this one, but I love it. It’s complicated and messy, but that’s how it works.

On the Fence by Kasie West: This has to my favourite Kasie West by far. It could also be my favourite contemporary book of all time. It’s beautiful, emotional and just plays with my heart. It’s a boy next door/brothers friend romance and it’s just so damn good. A simply perfect summer read.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick: One of the first contemporary books that I read and adored. It’s about family, first love and finding yourself. A boy next door romance, that explores the different dynamics of families. It’s heartbreaking, beautiful and just right for a nice day.

And that is it for this post! Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? Are you planning on reading them time soon? Do you have any recommendations? Let’s Chat!

I have read a lot of these and totally agree with many. I have been wanting to read 2nd Chance Summer for a long time, but haven’t read it yet.

I LOVE Catching Jordan and On the Fence. They’re two of my favourite books. I just love the characters so much. I’m slowly working my way through the Hundred Oaks series, but there’s just so many books on my TBR list.

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.

And I’m going to be honest here it’s because I’ve been constantly reading Heated Rivalry fanfics. 🤷‍♀️ I’m having the best time though.

How was your reading in February? Any 5 star reads?
