Recommendations | My Favourite Retellings

Recommendations | My Favourite Retellings

April 22, 2021 Posted by angelreads Uncategorized 1 Comment

Today I thought I would have a little fun and share some of my favourite retellings. From mythology and fairy tales to genderbending and being an inspiration.

It’s one of my favourite sub-genres to read. Retellings are something that has always captured my attention when I’m looking for a new read and one that I will pick up right away. I also love all types of retellings, from being loosely based, to just smaller things changed here and there. So today I’m sharing some of my favourites. There is a mix of romance, young adult and fantasy.  Like always these are in no order.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer: I adore this so much. Each book has its own story that is a retelling and it just works. I’m not a massive fan of science fiction. I just don’t read it enjoy. But it works perfectly here for me. I think my favourite characters from this series are Cinder, Throne and Wolf. Oh, and of course Iko. I did a reread last year and I loved it just as much.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely (Cursebreakers #1) by Brigid Kemmerer: I don’t know what it is exactly about this one that I love. But I do. In saying that I do need to finish this series. I love the characters, the story, the romance. I do know some things that happen in the later books and I’m curious to see where it goes. But this beauty and the beast retelling is fantastic.

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig: I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this book as much as I did. It’s a Twelve Dancing Princesses retelling that is dark and mysterious and I loved that. It’s an eerie novel that takes the reader on an adventure. Full Review

Romanov by Nadine Brandes: This is another one that I didn’t expect to love as much as I did. I picked it up because it sounded like something that I would enjoy – and I ended up really loving it. This is a historical retelling of what happened to Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov and the Romanov family. It’s intense, dark and addicting. Full Review.

The Guinevere Deception (Camelot Rising #1) by Kiersten White: I really enjoy the first book in this series and I’m nervous and excited to read the rest. This reimagining of the Arthurian legend is so good! I love anything to do with Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin and anything Camelot so this is my jam. Full Review.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller: So yer, this post wasn’t going to be written without this book appearing on my list. I adore this book so much. I read it back in 2018 and absolutely adored it. And now it’s getting this massive push – which I think is great because this retelling of Achilles and Patroclus is so damn good. Check out 5 reasons why I loved The Song of Achilles.

A Touch of Darkness (Hades & Persephone #1) by Scarlett St. Clair: This Hades and Persephone retelling is a new one on my list. I only read it a couple of months ago, but it jumped right on. It’s a fantastic romance retelling, that hits all the right spots. And managers to intertwine being a greek mythology retelling in a sort of modern world.

And I Darken (The Conqueror’s Saga #1) by Kiersten White: This one was another one that had to make it on my list. It’s been one of my favourite retellings I’ve ever read. This gender-bend Vlad the Impaler retelling is everything that I want and need. It has court intrigue, complicated romances, battle. And a protagonist that is not that easy to love. But it’s fantastic. Full Review.

Every Breath (Every #1) by Ellie Marney: This is one that I talk about here and there and I feel that I need to talk about it even more. This is one of my favourite YA series of all time. And it’s #LoveOzYA. This Sherlock Holmes inspired series is just brilliant and if you haven’t read it, please do!

An Offer From a Gentleman (Bridgertons #3) by Julia Quinn: This one is inspired by Cinderella and it’s fantastic. While it isn’t my favourite from the series, it’s up there for me. I love this whole series so much, but this is a standout. The romance is fantastic. I love the pull and mystery and I mean it’s Julia Quinn, it’s a great read either way.

And there we go, there are some of my favourite retellings! What are some of your favourites? Have you read any of these? What did you think of them? Let’s Chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
