Opps… I read a lot | August Wrap Up

Opps… I read a lot | August Wrap Up

Sep 2, 2021

Well, this was a big reading month. after a not so great month in July, August was a nice change. In saying that, we have been in lockdown for most of the month. So I have a lot of time to read – which I have been doing.

I’ve been reading a mix of things, but it has mostly been romance like most of the year. Also, I forgot to add a few books to last month’s wrap-up, so I’m including them here. I had a pretty good reading month in August, not only did I read a lot of books, but I also enjoyed a lot of them. I read some new authors and only did 1 series re-read. But anyway here we go, like always these are in no order.

Brothers Freed #1 and #2 by Bea Paige – 2 Stars | Pestilence (The Four Horsemen #1) by Laura Thalassa – 4 Stars| One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston – 4.5 Stars – Discussion.

Flipped #1 and  #2 by Carrie Aarons – 1.5 Stars | Neon Gods (Dark Olympus #1) by Katee Robert 5 Stars – Review | Color Me Pretty by B. Celeste 2 Stars.

Their Vampire Queen Series #1 – 4 by Joely Sue Burkhart – 3.5 Stars.

Queen Takes Checkmate (Their Vampire Queen #5) by Joely Sue Burkhart– 3 Stars | Thunder Road #1-3 by Katie McGarry – 4 Stars.

Scars (The Triad #1) by Dana Isaly 4 Stars | Baby & the Late Night Howlers (Sweet Omegaverse #1) by Kathryn Moon 3.5 Stars | Lola & the Millionaires: Part One (Sweet Omegaverse #2) by Kathryn Moon – 4 Stars  | Lola & the Millionaires: Part Two (Sweet Omegaverse #3) by Kathryn Moon  – 4 Stars.

And there we go. Those are the books that I read this August. From young adult re-reads to dark romances. What did you read in August? Are you planning on reading any of these books? Have you read any of them? Let’s, Cha!

My Favourite Recent Fictional Crushes

Aug 31, 2021

This week I’m sharing my favourite recent fictional crushes. Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and Bookish and is hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl.

Today I thought I would have a little fun with this week’s Top Ten Tuesday. I thought I would share some of my favourite recent fictional crushes. But I changed it a little. I’m not just sharing those I have fallen in love with, but those who call to me. Those that scream and shout and won’t let me forget them. So there we go, here are some of my favourite recent fictional crushes.

Oz from Nowhere But Here (Thunder Road #1) by Katie McGarry – Reread | Hades from Neon Gods (Dark Olympus #1) by Katee Robert – Discussion | August from One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston  | Axel from With You Forever (Bergman Brothers #4) by Chloe Liese – Review.

Hades and Persephone from Punderworld, Volume 1 by Linda Šejić | King from Lessons in Corruption (The Fallen Men #1) by Giana Darling – Review | Lore from Lore by Alexandra Bracken – Discussion | Steele from the Madison Kate series by Tate James – Review.

Hawke from Kiss of Snow (Psy-Changeling #10) by Nalini Singh | Lady Penelope Campion from The Wallflower Wager (Girl Meets Duke #3) by Tessa Dare.

And there we go! Those are some of my recent fictional crushes. Are any of these on your list? Who is on your list? Let’s Chat!

Also if you haven’t followed me on TikTok already and you want to, I’m posting over there every day – and it’s all about romance.

Ely’s Favourite Novels In Verse

Ely’s Favourite Novels In Verse

Aug 29, 2021

Hi, everyone! It’s Ely again and today I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite novels in verse. I think these are the perfect kinds of books to pick up towards the end of the year as they are usually quick reads, but also stunning ones. So here we go!

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo: It’s not a list of the best novels in verse without mentioning The Poet X. This is probably the one people are most aware of and for good reason—Acevedo is an absolute master of the genre. So if you’ve somehow missed out on The Poet X so far, I highly recommend picking that one up ASAP. At points, it is a bit of a tough read so be prepared for that.

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
Another absolute icon of writing novels in verse is Jacqueline Woodson. She’s truly amazing at everything she writes, whether it’s in verse or not, so definitely give her a read if you haven’t already. Brown Girl Reading is probably her most famous work, and it is more of an autobiography in verse but it’s so beautiful that I couldn’t resist.

One by Sarah Crossan
This is one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking books I’ve ever read. It’s the story of two conjoined twins as they make the decision to undergo an operation to disjoin them. Like I said, completely beautiful and heartbreaking. This is one of the ones I picked out for Angel to read this year, so look out for her thoughts on it at some point.

Shout by Laurie Halse Andersen
Going back to the autobiography in verse, Shout is basically Laurie Halse Andersen’s poetry discussing her experience with SA which led her to write Speak, but also talks about her life and writing outside of that as well. After I finished this, I gained a huge amount of respect for Laurie Halse Andersen and her books.

Turtle Under Ice by Juleah del Rosario
This comes out last year and is another book about sisterhood, what that means and why it’s important and finding yourself in life. It’s quite a small little book, but definitely worth your time.

Home Is Not A Country by Safia Elhillo
Finally, another book is also about finding yourself and the importance of family and country. This is also quite a short book. But it gets into some really intense themes and has a dash of something like magical realism to it. Someone on Goodreads said it was like if ‘Elizabeth Acevedo and Nina LaCour wrote a book together. Which I think is a good way to sum it up.

Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Vict Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Victoria Wilder’s Bourbon Boys series, and as soon as I heard she was writing a new series, around whiskey and women. Well, hell year. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but after a few chapters, I was hooked.

Wyn is hiding, hiding from everyone, even when she is there. She is hiding behind so much, and damn, I don’t blame her. We don’t know everything from the start, but we start piecing things together, and my heart broke. And I was terrified for her. But she is a Crowne woman, and that means something.

We’ve met Julian before, and while he intrigued me before, I am invested now. He is charming, secretive in the best way and will do anything at this point for Wyn. But he is also lost, and somehow he finds his way to Rumour and back into Wyn’s life.

The romance is hot and steamy and everything that you want. The tension and chemistry in this one is high. Neither Wyn nor Julian wants to really give in or give up on one another, but a lot is standing in their way, honestly, mainly themselves. I just sat there giggling half the time because they are swoon-worthy.

I would say this is the darkest Victoria Wilder book I’ve read, so double-check those trigger warnings before jumping in because there is a lot that happens. And I don’t think it’s going to die down any time soon because these Crowne women are badass, and I know things are only just getting started.

Overall, Rumors & Whiskey is hot and sexual. The tension is dripping off the page, and then you are thrown into the terror and horrors of Rumour. You don’t know what is going to happen next, you don’t know who to trust, and there are so many more secrets that have yet to be revealed. I know I am ready for more. Are you?

Thank you to @atriabooksaus for an earc of Rumors & Whiskey 🥃. I’m in love.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!
