The Three Books I Need You To Read

Dec 19, 2020

Hi guys, it’s Ely from Earl Grey Books. Can you believe this is my last guest post for 2020? Since it’s the last one for the year I thought I would share with you three books that I read in 2020 that I really want YOU to read. And yes Angel, that means you too.

The Last True Poets of the Sea by Julia Drake

I’ve been talking about this book a lot on my own blog lately. But it’s just so good that I have to mention it on here too. This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read and it does not get the recognition that it deserves. If you like the sorts of things that Angel tends to read and review, particularly the YA contemporaries she likes, then you’ll probably like this one too.

Only When It’s Us by Chloe Liese

You might’ve seen Angel talk about this one already because she was the one who made me read it, but it’s such a great read. I don’t read a lot of contemporary adult romance, and when I do, I often don’t like them. But this one has so much heart to it that I couldn’t help but love it. This is a cute sports romance, but it also features disability which you know Angel and I are both 100% here for.

The Arrival by Shaun Tan

I will never, ever shut up about Shaun Tan. He’s an Australian-based artist and writer and everything he’s ever created is stunning. The Arrival is one of the books of his I read this year and I think it’s probably my favourite. It’s a picture book, almost a graphic novel, though it doesn’t have any words. The images are so beautiful and powerful that you don’t need them to understand the story. He also creates the most adorable little creatures. Seriously these things need to be real so that my cat, Percy, can have them as friends.

And that’s a wrap on 2020 for me here. If you’re interested in hearing about the other amazing books I read in 2020, pop over to my blog over the next few weeks to see my top books lists!

Author Interview: Martha Waters | Romance Thursdays

Author Interview: Martha Waters | Romance Thursdays

Dec 10, 2020

This week on Romance Thursdays I had the lovely privilege of interviewing Martha Waters. I’m so excited to share this interview with you all. If you haven’t checked out the rest of my interviews in this series be sure to and see what other romance authors have to say.

Romance Thursdays is a feature that spotlights romance authors to highlight how amazing the romance writing community is. Each week I’m will be interviewing a different romance author from across subgenres as well as both traditionally and self-published. I want to share their experience writing romance and why they love it so much. While also focusing on their writing and books.

Martha Waters is the author of two regency rom-coms, To Have and to Hoax which was published earlier this year and To Love and to Loathe, which is set to be released in April 2021. Now let’s get into this interview.

Hi Martha, and welcome to Angel Reads. For those that haven’t read anything by you yet. Tell us a little about yourself and your books?

I’m a children’s librarian and Anglophile who writes romantic comedies set in Regency England. My first novel, To Have and to Hoax, came out this past spring, and a companion book, To Love and to Loathe, comes out on April 6, 2021. They’re both silly, hijinks-filled rom-coms featuring a big cast of meddling friends, lots of banter, and — of course — plenty of kissing. My first book is a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers story about an estranged married couple, and the companion is about their best friends and a friends (frenemies?) with benefits type arrangement.

Why did you start writing romance novels? Is there anything in particular that drew you to it over other genres?

I always wanted to write but for the longest time, I thought I wanted to write fantasy for kids and teens. I’m not ruling out doing that eventually, but once I started reading romance novels while I was in graduate school, I got really hooked on the genre and realized that romance was full of my favorite thing to write: people sitting around talking to each other. I just love interpersonal relationships between characters, which is what romance is all about. To Have and to Hoax is the first romance I ever attempted, after a few years post-college of trying and failing to get a YA book published, and I just instantly knew once I started writing it that it was the right fit for me.

Both of your books are historical rom-coms. What is your favourite thing about combining historical romance and romantic comedy? Why did you decide to do that?

I really like all the tropes and societal rules of Regency romances — and I’m just generally obsessed with all things England — but I wanted to write something that felt really fresh and young and modern and appeal to readers my age. I kind of just wrote the book I wanted to read, to be honest, and this is the result — I think it’s the best of both worlds.

What is your favourite thing about romance as a genre? Why do you like reading and writing it?

I love all the tropes! It’s so fun to see a trope you’ve seen done over and over again executed in a really clever, original way by a great author. The predictability of some of the beats in a romance novel — the mid-book coming together, the third act breakup, the happily ever after — is really comforting to me as a reader.

What are some of your favourite tropes that you like reading and writing in the romance genre?

I love enemies-to-lovers (which both of my books kind of are, but also kind of aren’t, if that makes sense). I also really love marriage in trouble stories (which my first book definitely is), marriage of convenience (I want to write one of these!), and fake dating.

Who are some of your favourite romance authors? Who inspired you to write?

Julia Quinn is the reason I started reading and writing romance, and I’m inspired by a lot of other historical authors in addition to her, including Loretta Chase, Eloisa James, Cat Sebastian, and Tessa Dare. In the contemporary space, I love Lucy Parker, Sonali Dev, Kate Clayborn, Jasmine Guillory, and Sally Thorne.

What are some of the ways that you think we can start overcoming the stigma of romance novels?

I think we’ve made good progress in this regard in the past few years. And I hate to say it, but I think the popularity of illustrated covers has helped in some ways, in that it’s lured new readers to the genre and once they’re here we can get them hooked on other romances with more traditionally “romancey” looking covers. I have so many friends who read romance now who didn’t read the genre even three or four years ago, so that gives me a lot of hope. I also think we need to continue to diversify as a genre and make it less of a straight, white space so that it feels like something relevant to the modern world, which will attract even more readers, and the more readers we have, the less of a stigma there will be!

Do you currently have any books in the works? Is there anything that you are looking forward to writing, but haven’t started yet?

I’m working on something right now that I, unfortunately, can’t talk about because it’s not yet announced, or even under contract! But once I can (hopefully) share more about it, I will. I also have an idea for a fantasy rom-com I want to try writing, if I can find some time in between other projects — hopefully soon!

Thank you so much for coming by Angel Reads. It was lovely having you here. And I can’t wait to read more of your books!

Thank you so much for inviting me!

Books I Love To Read This Time Of Year

Books I Love To Read This Time Of Year

Dec 8, 2020

This week it’s a holiday freebie so I’m sharing the books I love to read this time of year.  Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and Bookish and is hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl.

I don’t read many holiday-related books. I’m not too sure why. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that where I live, it’s summer during Christmas. And I’ve never had the chance to experience a white Christmas. So today I thought I would share some of the books that I like to read and re-read this time of year.

A Wallflower Christmas (Wallflowers #4.5) by Lisa Kleypas: I mean what is more perfect than reading a Lisa Kleypas historical romance set around Christmas? I adore this one and I think it’s going to one that I will re-read often.

Life on the Edge (Edge #1) by Jennifer Comeaux: I don’t know what it is about this series that makes me want to re-read it during the holiday period. Maybe because it has to be with figure-skating, and then that makes me think of snow. There are also some Christmas scenes in it as well. But this is such a fun series and I love re-reading it.

North of Need (Hearts of the Anemoi #1) by Laura Kaye: I’ve read a chuck on Laura Kaye and this is the first of her paranormal/fantasy that I picked up. It’s great, I had a blast reading it and I need to continue with the rest of the series for sure.

Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits #1) by Katie McGarry: I tend to do a lot of re-reading at the end of the year, not totally sure why I do it. But I do. And Katie McGarry is someone I love to read it. And this series, especially the first book is one I adore. It’s one of the books that got me reading more and more romance. I always love a bad boy.

Rookie Move (Brooklyn Bruisers #1) by Sarina Bowen: This is another favourite of mine that I love to re-read. It’s such a fun series, and this first book just hits all the right places. I adore the romance, I love the characters and it has ice hockey so why not?

The Duke and I (Bridgertons #1) by Julia Quinn: Historical romances are some of my favourite things to read this time of year. I’m normally so busy with work, that heavy high fantasies are just hard to read and I can’t keep focus. But HR novels are perfect and this series has been a gem reading this year and I can’t wait to read more.

Check, Please! Book 1: # Hockey (Check, Please! #1-2) by Ngozi Ukazu: As I said before December is normally a very busy month work-wise for me. So graphic novels are a great way for me to still read, but not be tied down by a book. This has to be one of my favourite graphic novels series ever. It just makes me smile and feel so happy.

Full Measures (Flight & Glory #1) by Rebecca Yarros: This is another one I love re-reading this time of year. I’m not sure why it happens but Rebecca Yarros just knows how to hit all the right places. And this book right here is what started it all.  The romance, the heartbreak and heartache. But then, the hope. Oh gosh.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune: At this time of year, I like to read books that just make me happy. And this is one of them for sure. I am sure that you are getting sick of me talking about this one, but it’s fantastic and I will never stop. But if you are looking for a book that will just make you smile. Then this is it.

And that is it for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday! What books do you love to read this time of year? Do we share any that is the same? Let’s Chat!

Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Vict Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Victoria Wilder’s Bourbon Boys series, and as soon as I heard she was writing a new series, around whiskey and women. Well, hell year. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but after a few chapters, I was hooked.

Wyn is hiding, hiding from everyone, even when she is there. She is hiding behind so much, and damn, I don’t blame her. We don’t know everything from the start, but we start piecing things together, and my heart broke. And I was terrified for her. But she is a Crowne woman, and that means something.

We’ve met Julian before, and while he intrigued me before, I am invested now. He is charming, secretive in the best way and will do anything at this point for Wyn. But he is also lost, and somehow he finds his way to Rumour and back into Wyn’s life.

The romance is hot and steamy and everything that you want. The tension and chemistry in this one is high. Neither Wyn nor Julian wants to really give in or give up on one another, but a lot is standing in their way, honestly, mainly themselves. I just sat there giggling half the time because they are swoon-worthy.

I would say this is the darkest Victoria Wilder book I’ve read, so double-check those trigger warnings before jumping in because there is a lot that happens. And I don’t think it’s going to die down any time soon because these Crowne women are badass, and I know things are only just getting started.

Overall, Rumors & Whiskey is hot and sexual. The tension is dripping off the page, and then you are thrown into the terror and horrors of Rumour. You don’t know what is going to happen next, you don’t know who to trust, and there are so many more secrets that have yet to be revealed. I know I am ready for more. Are you?

Thank you to @atriabooksaus for an earc of Rumors & Whiskey 🥃. I’m in love.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!
