Book Tag | Finished the Book

Book Tag | Finished the Book

Aug 28, 2020

Today I thought I would have some fun and do another book tag. Today it’s the Finished The Book book tag. This tag was created by Headless Books. I wasn’t tagged by anyone but thought that this would a great tag to do.

1) Do you keep a list of the books you have read?

I normally just keep track on Goodreads. I’ve tried to use other methods, but I read a lot of books and it just got too much work. I want to attempt to do it again next year, but we will see. The other ways that I have tried are through spreadsheets and bullet journaling.

2) If you record stats, what stats do you record?

While I don’t always record stats. I love looking at the ones that Goodreads provide. There are two of them that I enjoy. First, the end of year stats is so fun to look at. From my longest read to my shortest and everything in between. The other one I like is these stats that they do. It’s just so fun to look at.

3) Do you give star ratings for books and if so, what do you rate books out of and how do you come about this score?

I normally give my ratings out of 5. It’s just easier in regards to Goodreads and other sites that use ratings. In saying that I do give half ratings. For the most part, a 3 start is a pretty good rating for me. It means I enjoyed the book, it has some things that I didn’t like. But overall I had a good read. Mu current average rating on Goodreads is 3.64.

4) Do you review books?

Yes! I’m attempting to write at least a few sentences for every book I read, but like I said I read a lot. Other than that you can find my reviews here on Angel Reads or over on my Goodreads

5) Where do you put your finished books?

I just bought new bookshelves so I did a massive rearrangement of my books recently. I currently have all my finished books on my shelves in the family room, outside my bedroom. It has turned into a makeshift library though and has been that way for several years. I have most of my unread books currently in my bedroom, either on my shelves or in my TBR cart.

6) How do you pick your next book?

I’m normally read by mood. I make a little tbr for the month and I reading them when I’m in the mood. I’ve been that way for a while. I find that a fixed TBR is hard for me to stick too and it just doesn’t happen.

I do plan out my review book reads, but like with my other tbr, it’s normally just a wide time frame. I don’t put too much pressure on myself to read books by a certain time.

7) Do you have any other rituals for when you have finished a book?

It depends on the book. If it’s a pleasure read, I normally just mark it as finished on Goodreads and rate it. Sometimes I’ll write a couple of sentences.

If it’s a review book, I normally try and get a couple of thoughts down. Especially if they are pressing thoughts.  None of it really makes sense, but it helps me write my review later on.

8) Who do you tag?

Today I will be taking Ely from Earl Grey Books

And that is it for today’s post. I had so much doing this tag? What are your habits when you finish a book? Let’s Chat!

Romance Recs: Favourite Historical Romances

Romance Recs: Favourite Historical Romances

Aug 27, 2020

This year I’ve started a new feature where I share my romance recommendations for certain genres and sub-genres. And I can’t believe that I haven’t done a historical romance one yet and I thought today was about time.

I’ve been reading historical romances for over two years now and its slowly become one of my favourite subgenres of romance. It has everything that I love in a romance and more. So today I’m sharing some of my favourite historical romances that I think everyone should read. Like always these are in no order.

Unmasked by the Marquess (Regency Imposters #1) by Cat Sebastian: I not only love this book so much but this whole series. But this one features a nonbinary protagonist and I love it so much. It’s such a change from other historical romances and it’s perfect. They are fun, entertaining reads that are not only diverse but still have the classic historical romacne feel.

A Lady Never Tells (Women of Daring #1) by Lynn Winchester: I wasn’t expecting to like this one as much as I did. But I loved the female lead. So much. Plus the plot is sticking and so much fun. I love that it’s different and adventurous. It makes for an interesting read. I can’t wait to read more books in this series.

Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers #1) by Lisa Kleypas: If I could put all of Lisa Kleypas books in this list I would. But I’m sticking with 1 book per series. And this has to be my favourite in this series. I love all the book but this one has a special place in my heart. I love the romance in this one by far. It’s just fantastic.

Appetites & Vices (The Truitts #1) by Felicia Grossman: I enjoyed reading this one. I liked that it wasn’t set in the UK – which I had been used to by then. I loved that it looked at a different religion. It’s just an interesting read and I want more people to read Felicia Grossman.

Wicked and the Wallflower (The Bareknuckle Bastards #1) by Sarah MacLean: If you haven’t picked this book up yet – please do. It’s fantastic. It has a fantastic romance, a plot that you don’t want to stop reading. And fantastic characters. I loved the mystery elements of this one a lot and I can’t wait to read the rest.

Love in the Afternoon (The Hathaways #5) by Lisa Kleypas: This by far has to be my favourite from the series. I’ve said it before but I adore Beatrix and I can’t talk enough about her. I love that she is different and is who she is. It just makes for such a fun, entertaining read.

Bringing Down the Duke (A League of Extraordinary Women #1) by Evie Dunmore: I need more people to read this one. It’s seriously fantastic. It is a fabulous debut novel and I can’t wait to read the second book. I love the time that it explores – which I hadn’t read anything from.

Who Wants to Marry a Duke (Duke Dynasty #3) by Sabrina Jeffries: I hadn’t read a Sabrina Jeffries book before I picked one up a couple of months ago and now I’m in love. This one was such a wonderful reading experience and has everything that I look for in a historical romance. I adored Thorn and Oliva as both protagonists and lovers.

Cold-Hearted Rake (The Ravenels #1) by Lisa Kleypas: This is the last of the Lisa Kleypas series I’ve read and I love it as much as the others. The first book in this series though stands out to me. The romance to hate to love, forbidden and everything else. It’s just fantastic.

Rebel (Women Who Dare #1) by Beverly Jenkins: I can’t believe that I hadn’t picked a Beverly Jenkins book up until a couple of months ago, because they are fantastic. This is my favourite of the ones that I have read so much because the romance is so good. I just can’t. They are one of my favourite couples. I love that it’s set in a different time than other historical romances and it’s hella diverse – which I adore.

I’m sure as I read more and more historical romances this list will grow and change. Have you read any of these? What did you think of them? What are some of your favourite historical romances? Let’s Chat!

Book Review: The Reality of Everything by Rebecca Yarros

Book Review: The Reality of Everything by Rebecca Yarros

Two years after the man she loved was killed in Afghanistan, Morgan Bartley is trying to put the pieces of her life back together. The reno on her dilapidated beach house in the Outer Banks might be just the distraction she needs to keep her debilitating anxiety attacks at bay and begin to heal her heart…if she can ignore the ridiculously handsome guy next door.

At twenty-eight, single-dad Jackson Montgomery’s life revolves around his five-year-old daughter and his job as a search-and-rescue pilot for the coast guard. He’s no stranger to saving a damsel in distress, and though his gorgeous new neighbor is clearly in distress, she’s no damsel. She’s stubborn as hell with walls a mile thick, and the dog tags hanging from her rearview mirror give him a pretty good clue as to why.

It doesn’t matter that their attraction is undeniable―she swore she’d never fall for another pilot, let alone a military man. There are some wounds time can’t heal, and some fears too consuming to conquer.

She’s a barely breathing heartbreak on the edge of recovery.
He’s a crash waiting to happen.
Together they could have it all…if they can endure the coming storm.

The Reality of Everything:

I received an earc of The Reality of Everything by Rebecca Yarros in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about this book.

I just want to make a quick note, there will be spoilers from previous books in this series, especially Hallowed Ground. I tried to keep spoilers from this book minimal though.

The Reality of Everything follows Morgan Bartley as she tries to move on with life. She is trying to put all the pieces back together after losing the man that she loved. But the ride hasn’t been easy, not even a little bit. When Morgan moves to the Outer Banks, she wants a start fresh. But the grief she still feels two years later is consuming. And then she meets single father, Jackson Montgomery. She doesn’t want to fall for him. She can’t. But sometimes life isn’t always that easy. Especially Jackson is another pilot and Morgan swore she was going to stay away from them.

Morgan is such an easy protagonist to get along with from the start. I don’t know if it’s because readers have known her from previous books. Or that she is such easy to like. But I love that we finally got her book – though it did hurt. A lot. 2 years after the events of Hallowed Ground, Morgan is still reeling with grief. She doesn’t know what to do with herself. But moving might be the answer. And while she does feel a little more free, her grief still consumers her. However as the novel goes on, the reader can see Morgan grow and learn. She starts to let go.  I adored seeing this character growth in Morgan, especially from the first few books.

Jackson was such a fantastic make protagonist. Seriously. Like all the males in this series, they have a lot of passion and that worked in Jackson’s favour. I think Jackson has become one of my favourite male protagonist in this series – ah! He was just so nice. If that makes any sense at all. I can’t even explain it properly, I just enjoyed reading him.

Jackson wasn’t expecting Morgan to come into his life. He has his beautiful daughter and a job that he loves. But the spark between the two is present from the start. But Jackson understands that Morgan has been through a lot. He understands. Morgan doesn’t want anything to do with Jackson, but both he and his little girl have wormed their ways into her heart. There are many ups and downs between Morgan and Jackson throughout  The Reality of Everything. And while there was a little miscommunication, it didn’t upset me like it normally would. I adored these two together, they understood one another without even realising they did.

Family and friendship is a massive part of  The Reality of Everything. I love reading single fathers in romances and Rebecca Yarros was able to do it exceptionally well here. The relationship between the two was adorable and I loved not only the scenes between Jackson and his daughter but also Morgan. They all fit together so well.

This was a hard read not going to lie. I cried for most of the book. If there is one thing that I can say about this book is that Rebecca Yarros knows how to write grief. She knows how to dig deep and make you feel everything that the characters are feeling. One of the things that I loved about The Reality of Everything and Morgan’s grief was that it wasn’t fixed by love. Morgan had to work to get past the grief and breath a little better. Love didn’t fix anything, but it helped Morgan strive for more.

Grief and friendship are explored throughout The Reality of Everything, but there are a few scenes that stick out to me. They were not easy to read at all. I could feel all the pain from each of the characters. And because Morgan kept a lot of her feelings inside, when they did come out it was…explosive and gosh I just wanted to hug them all. The tension between Morgan and Paisley was raw and real and damn it hurt. Both of them didn’t talk with one another and that was the cause for a lot of the tension. I do wish we were able to see them connect just a little bit more though.

Like a classic Rebecca Yarros, there are some pretty intense moments throughout  The Reality of Everything and the intensity was high for sure. But she can write them so naturally that it doesn’t feel out of place.

Overall The Reality of Everything by Rebecca Yarros was a fantastic read. I cried, I laughed and I smiled. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and written exceptionally well. It’s the perfect way to end this series and wrap up all those ends that we wanted to know. The Reality of Everything explored grief, family, and friendship. It looks at moving, falling in love, and remembering.

If you haven’t picked up the Flight and Glory series, please do. They are tough to read but they are also beautiful military romance series that explores the good and the bad.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.

Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I onl Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I only ended up reading 3 books in. 3 pretty fun books but one of my slowest readings months in a while.

And I’m going to be honest here it’s because I’ve been constantly reading Heated Rivalry fanfics. 🤷‍♀️ I’m having the best time though.

How was your reading in February? Any 5 star reads?
