A Rebel, A Protector and Luna | Mini Romance Reviews

A Rebel, A Protector and Luna | Mini Romance Reviews

Jun 13, 2020

Today I thought I would share some romance mini-reviews. I’ve been reading a lot of romance books this year and sometimes it’s hard to keep track of them all. So I thought sharing my thoughts through mini-reviews would be fun. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on Rebel (Women Who Dare #1) by Beverly Jenkins, Up Close and Personal by Kathryn Freeman and Luna and the Lie by Mariana Zapata.

Rebel (Women Who Dare #1) by Beverly Jenkins

Pages: 384
Publish date: May 28th 2019
Publisher: Avon
ISBN: 9780062861696
Purchase: Book Depository – Amazon UK – Amazon US – Amazon AU

Valinda Lacey’s mission in the steamy heart of New Orleans is to help the newly emancipated community survive and flourish. But soon she discovers that here, freedom can also mean danger. When thugs destroy the school she has set up and then targets her, Valinda runs for her life—and straight into the arms of Captain Drake LeVeq.

As an architect from an old New Orleans family, Drake has a deeply personal interest in rebuilding the city. Raised by strong women, he recognizes Valinda’s determination. And he can’t stop admiring—or wanting—her. But when Valinda’s father demands she return home to marry a man she doesn’t love, her daring rebellion draws Drake into an irresistible intrigue.

Rebel:

I can’t believe I haven’t read a Beverly Jenkins before this one. It was fantastic and I never knew that I needed it.

Rebel follows teacher Valinda Lacey as she tries to help the newly emancipated community of New Orleans survive and thrive. And after her school is destroyed, Valinda herself then becomes a target. That is when she runs into the safety of Captain Drake LeVeq. And they can’t stop admiring one another, then Valinda’s father demands that she return home and marry another.

I can’t begin to express how much I loved Rebel. It was fantastically written, with characters that were present and full. Both Valinda and Drake had such great character arcs and the reader can truly see them grow throughout the novel.

Valinda is such a brilliant female protagonist, I loved her so much. She was determined and tried not to let anything get her down and that was fantastic. While Drake was such a flirt and I loved it. He was such a fun character to be around. The romance was so beautiful in this one. Valinda and Drake made me smile the whole way through. They just brought such brightness to the page. And I loved that so much.

Rebel also deals with newly emancipated slaves and I liked how Beverly Jenkins explores that. She explores the major tension that still was held in the communities and how while not slaves anymore, they were still being treated differently.

Rebel by Beverly Jenkins is such a fantastic historical romance and I can’t wait to read more. The romance was fantastic and I enjoyed reading a book set in a different time than I normally read in my historical romance. I’ve not read many historical romances set after the Civil War but this was fantastic. If you are looking for a fantastic historical romance then his one is for you.

Up Close and Personal by Kathryn Freeman

Pages: 400

British actor Zac Edwards is the latest heartthrob to hit the red carpets. Hot, talented and rich, he sends women wild…all except one.

Close protection officer Kat Parker hasn’t got time to play celebrity games. She has one job: to protect Zac from the stalker that seems to be dogging his every move.

Zac might get her hot under her very starched collar, but Kat’s a professional – and sleeping with Zac is no way part of her remit…

Up Close and Personal:

I received a copy of Up Close and Personal by Kathryn Freeman from One More Chapter via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.

I was looking forward to reading this one, it sounded fun and excited and I was sadly disappointed. The romance felt off and I wasn’t able to connect with the characters fully.

Up Close and Personal follows Kat Parker as she starts to protect her new charge; Zac Edwards. Zac is the lastest British heartthrob and has a stalker. When things start to get serious, Kat becomes his close protection officer. But being this close both Kat and Zac start to fall for one another – but Kat must stay professional.

I wanted to love this book so much. It sounded like something that I would enjoy. But everything fell flat for me. Kat was a decent protagonist, but I just could not connect with her fully. I felt everything that she was holding back from Zac and that made it even harder to connect with her as a reader. I felt the same with Zac. Both characters lacked something and I can’t put my finger on it.

Because of this, I did feel that the romance felt off. I also felt that we didn’t get enough of it. Or the connection. At first, the reader can see the tension, but then it stayed on that level, until the end. There was just this whole part that felt missing and I wanted more of that.

In saying all this I felt the tension and stakes in the book were good and I did enjoy that aspect. I did guess some fo the things that were going to happen but then I was surprised by other things – which I found fantastic.

Overall, Up Close and Personal by Kathryn Freeman was an okay read. I won’t be talking about it again, but I didn’t hate it. I wish the romance was focused on more and the reader was able to see it grow a lot more. Both Kat and Zac felt a little flat for me and I do wish they were a little more fleshed out.

Luna and the Lie by Mariana Zapata

Pages: 628
Publish date: December 12th 2018
Publisher: –
ASIN: B07LBMPK54
Purchase: Amazon UK – Amazon US – Amazon AU

The problem with secrets is that they’re too easy to keep collecting.

Luna Allen has done some things she would rather no one ever know about. She also knows that, if she could go back in time, she wouldn’t change a single thing.

With three sisters she loves, a job she (mostly) adores, and a family built up of friends she’s made over the years, Luna figures everything has worked out the way it was supposed to.

But when one of those secrets involves the man who signs her paycheck, she can’t find it in her to regret it. Despite the fact that he’s not the friendliest man in the world. Or the most patient.

Sometimes there are things you’re better off keeping to yourself.

Luna and the Lie:

I didn’t know what to expect going into this book. I had heard a lot of things about Mariana Zapata from romance bloggers and booktubers. But I never picked any of her books up, but I was going through a romance binge and I found this on Kindle Unlimited and I thought why not.

Luna and the Lie follows Luna Allen as she tries and go through her life. She tries to put her past behind her but also doesn’t want to forget it. And she loves the life that she is living, then secrets start to surface and one of them is from the man who signs her paycheck. Rip is always angry. And doesn’t want to make friends with anyone. But Luna has a way with people.

I wasn’t expecting to like this, but I did. I did have a few problems with it, but overall, I enjoyed reading this. Luna was a fabulous protagonist and I loved getting to know all about her. I loved her optimism and everything else that she worked. I adored that she worked in this ‘all-male’ environment. It just made her stand out more. Rip was intriguing, I do have to say, however, I didn’t love him. I wanted to, but I did feel disconnected with him.

The romance in Luna and the Lie is very, very slow. If you don’t like a slow burn, then this one is not for you. I do enjoy slow burns, but at times this even felt slow for me. But I loved getting to know both Luna and Rip and seeing them fall for one another. One of my major issues with this book was that it was long, like very long. Too long, maybe?

Overall, I enjoyed reading Luna and the Lie by Mariana Zapata. And I will and have will read more books from Mariana Zapata. The romance was an incredibly slow burn but I did hate that. I enjoyed Luna as a protagonist and liked Rip. If you are looking for a slow-burn romance that has many layers, then this book is for you.

And those are my mini romance reviews! Have you read any of these? What did you think of them? What romance books have you read recently? Let’s Chat!

Books I Bought In May | Book Haul

Books I Bought In May | Book Haul

Jun 10, 2020

Today I thought I would share some of the books that I bought and received in May. I didn’t buy too many books last month. I wasn’t on a buying ban per se. However, most of the books that I had on order at work or did plan to read have been delayed. Which is fine. Which is good. Anyway, here are the books that I bought and received in May. Like always these are in no order.

Men of Inked #1 – #3 by Chelle Bliss: I spoke about this series in my May wrap up I picked this one up because I felt like reading a book that included something to do with tattoo’s and while this series wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, I still enjoyed reading it

Fallen Son (The Fallen Men #2.5) by Giana Darling: I read the four books already out in this series in April and loved it. But I somehow missed this one, so I had to pick it up. Fallen Son is really sweet. I loved getting to look at this side of the characters and MC.

The Thalanian Dynasty Series by Katee Robert: This author popped up a lot last month with romance readers so I thought why not and give it a go. I’ve read the novella now and enjoyed it, so I got the rest of the series so I can continue reading this month.

May HaulThe Year the Maps Changed by Danielle Binks: There was a lot of Aussie YA and MG that came out in May and this one was one of them. I’m hoping to pick this one up this month, and I can’t wait. It’s set where I spent a lot of my summers growing up. And that just sounds fantastic to me.

Peta Lyre’s Rating Normal by Anna Whateley: Another #LoveOzYA that I picked up last month and I’m so excited. It sounds fantastic and it’s been getting some amazing reviews. It looks like it’s going to be exactly what I love.

Please Don’t Hug Me by Kay Kerr: More #LoveOzYA. Because yes! This is another one that I cannot wait to read. It sounds fantastic and I need to read it soon. Again I’ve been hearing some great things about this one and I’m excited to see what I think of it.

The Heroes of Olympus Boxed Set by Rick Riordan: After doing my re-read of Percy Jackson, I thought I would re-read the next series and then I realised that I don’t own them. I read them from the school library the first time. I ended up getting the gorgeous 10th-anniversary edition and I’m so in love.

May Haul A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby (Rogues and Remarkable Women #1) by Vanessa Riley: This is one of the books that I received for review and I’m intrigued by it. The reviews have been up and down, but the synopsis has caught my eye. Especially because it’s a diverse historical romance that includes a disabled character. I’m hoping to pick this up in the next couple of days.

Who Wants to Marry a Duke (Duke Dynasty #3) by Sabrina Jeffries: I’ve heard so many good things about this author and I cannot wait to dig into this series and this book. The synopsis of this one caught my eye right away and now I can’t wait to read it. I’m going to try and read the first two books before I do pick this one up, so hopefully, that happens.

The Bro Code by Elizabeth A. Seibert: I honestly had heard nothing about this book before I requested to review it, but it sounds tropey and like something that I might enjoy. This doesn’t come out till September so I might not read it for a while.

And I think that is it for my May haul! And while I didn’t buy a lot of books last month. I currently have a lot of books on order and I mean a lot. And I also didn’t include books that I did pay for in May but have yet to arrive. I did two decent orders of romance books, so hopefully, they come soon.

What books did you get in May? Are any of them the same as me? What books are you looking forward to in June? Let’s Chat!

Books I’ve Added to my TBR and Forgotten Why

Books I’ve Added to my TBR and Forgotten Why

Jun 9, 2020

This week I’m sharing books that I’ve added to my TBR, but I’ve forgotten why. Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and Bookish and is hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl.

I add a lot of books to my Goodreads tbr. It’s a place where I can keep everything about my books in one spot. I like to use my Goodreads tbr as a reminder of the books that I would like to read, they don’t necessarily have to be books that I own. It’s a place where I see something that I like and I add it to my to-read for later. So today I’m sharing some of the books that I’ve added to this TBR and I can’t remember why.

I’m really bad at reading books from this TBR. If it’s from authors that I love or a highly anticipated then I will pick it up. But I do forget a lot about the books on this list. I do like to go through it every once and a while and get rid of books. Anyway, like always these are in no order.

Kiss Kill Vanish by Jessica Martinez: This one came out quite a while ago now, and I’m not even sure many people I know read it. So I don’t even know how it ended up on my TBR. But I just had a quick look at the synopsis and it does sound like something that I still might enjoy. Will need to see if I can get it soon. I honestly think that the cover may have caught my eye.

Clipped Wings (Clipped Wings #1) by Helena Hunting: I have completely forgotten as to why this is on my TBR. But I can have a few guesses. It could have been when I was loving paranormal novels – which I still do. Or maybe when I first started getting into romance. I’ve since then read something from Helena Hunting, didn’t love it, but I think I might leave this one of there for now.

Cold Summer by Gwen Cole: I honestly think it was the cover that first made me add this to my TBR. In saying that, it does sound like something that I might enjoy. It’s a  historical fiction set in WWII. If you have read this one please let me know what you think.

Brave New Girl (Brave New Girl #1) by Rachel Vincent: I’m not sure why this book was on my list. I’ve seriously forgotten as to why I would have put it there. It doesn’t sound like my thing. I mean I did read a few dystopian books, but honestly, they weren’t something that always pulled me in. It sounds so boring.

Martinis & Moonlight (Country Road #3) by Andrea Johnston: I have no idea why this one is on my TBR. I didn’t like the first two books. They were both under 2.5 Stars to me. So why I added the next one I’m not too sure. Why did I want to put myself through pain?

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James: I may have put this one on my TBR because of the author, but honestly I don’t understand why. I don’t read much science fiction. And when I do it has to be something that will stand out and from someone that I love reading. And that isn’t the case here.

Cracked Kingdom (The Royals #5) by Erin Watt: I can’t even explain why this is on my list. Like, have I forgotten how much I didn’t like this series. I gave most of the books in the series 2 stars, I honestly don’t why I kept on reading. I thought that it would get better – but it got worse, much worse.

A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes: This sounds like something that I might enjoy, but I’ve also not heard much about it. Especially from people that I know. It sounds interesting, but I have forgotten how it got onto my TBR.

Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn: If there is one book on this list that I have no clue about. It’s this one. The others I can make some guesses, but this one. It’s not me at all. Contemporary romances aren’t something that I enjoy a lot. But a couple of people that I trust enjoyed it, so that might be why.

Breathe (Sea Breeze #1) by Abbi Glines: I’m not sure why this is one my list. I’ve never really been interested in Abbi Glines books for some reasons. They have never caught my attention, so I’ve forgotten why this one is on my tbr.

And that is it for this weeks post! What are some of the books that you’ve forgotten that you have on your TBR? Are any the same as mine? Let’s Chat!

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.

Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I onl Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I only ended up reading 3 books in. 3 pretty fun books but one of my slowest readings months in a while.

And I’m going to be honest here it’s because I’ve been constantly reading Heated Rivalry fanfics. 🤷‍♀️ I’m having the best time though.

How was your reading in February? Any 5 star reads?
