Female Protagonist That I Adore

Female Protagonist That I Adore

Jul 10, 2019

Today I get to talk about the female protagonist that I just adore and I can’t wait. Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and Bookish and is hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl.

I love reading about a female protagonist. Always have and always will. There is something really great about having a badass female taking over the page. So today I thought I would share some of my favourites from all types of genres.

Emma Carstairs from The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare: Emma has to be one of my favourite Cassandra Clare characters ever, I mean there are so many from this series alone that I love. But there is something about Emma that just sticks with me. Firstly she isn’t like Clare’s other female protagonists. She has been training to be a shadowhunter her whole life, then everything changes in her life and The Dark Artifices series takes her for a ride.

Harper from A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer: Harper has to be one of my favourite female protagonists ever. Her voice seized me from the very start. I was able to connect with not only Harper’s voice but also the worries that she has throughout A Curse So Dark and Lonely. I adored that she was quick on her feet and didn’t let anyone stop her. Harper just took everything and went with it. One of the things that I loved about Harper, was that she didn’t like her disability define her. It wasn’t brushed aside and it didn’t let it stop her.

Taylor from Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde: Taylor is such a fantastic protagonist. I was able to connect with her on so many different levels it was crazy, and that made me love her even more. Her passion for everything that she loved, including her friends was so great to see. I adored that she wasn’t ashamed to share her love for books, TV shows, movies. She is that fandom queen and it worked so well.

Beatrix Hathaway from Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas: I love so many of Lisa Kleypas female protagonist but Beatrix stands out. She just lights up the page whenever she is there. Beatrix made me laugh so much. I adored that she was able to care for animals and didn’t care what others really thought about her. Looking after animals is what made her happy and she will keep on doing that no matter what.  Beatrix doesn’t let others stop her for being who she is.

Bailey Rydell from Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett: I totally clicked with Bailey as a protagonist and I immediately wanted to take the journey with her.  I loved that she was hesitant, that she wasn’t sure of herself or even where she wanted to go. When Bailey questioned who she was and her passion for movies and what they explore was so fun to see.

Rebecca from Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen: She is sassy, strong and just made me smile. After Rebecca’s accident on the ice, she feels lost. She can’t work, she can’t stand without feeling dizzy, she just wants things to go back to normal. It was hard to see Rebecca struggle with this. She wants to go back to work and do things with her life – but her health stops her. While it’s only temporary for Rebecca, I could totally connect with her.

Lada Dragwlya from The Conqueror’s Saga by Kiersten White: Lada was quite interesting, she is very brutal and has little to no remorse. Sometimes it was hard to connect with her nevertheless, I do understand why she was that way. But that is also why she is one of my favourite protagonists ever. I never know what Lada is going to do, say and hell that makes her so interesting.

Rachel Watts from the Every Series by Ellie Marney: I adore Rachel so much. If you haven’t had the chance to read the Every Series up, then please do. Because Rachel is a kickass protagonist without even trying. I love that is unapologetic about who she is, she is just her.

And those are some of my favourite female protagonists! Do we share any that’s the same? Who are some of your favourites? Let’s Chat!

Books I Loved Reading as a Child

Books I Loved Reading as a Child

Jul 2, 2019

I haven’t done a Top Ten Tuesday post in ages! And what better way to get back into than talking about all the books I loved as a child. Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and Bookish and is hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl.

I’ve always loved reading – I really don’t remember a time when I wasn’t reading.  So today I am going to share the books that I loved reading when I was younger. For the sake of this post all the books, I talked about were books I read before I was about 12. It was after that that I started reading YA. So the books on this list are a mix of books that I couldn’t stop reading or had read to me from a young age.

If I Ran the Circus by Dr. Seuss: I think this one here has to be my favourite Dr Seuss book ever – I seriously cannot tell you how many times I read this. There are many reasons why I love this one so much, firstly, it’s a pretty long book. I didn’t love the other Dr Seuss books as much because I could finish then in 10 minutes, but this one, this one I could spend a while reading. It was also so much fun to read.

The Sleepover Club by Rose Impey: This was one of my favourite TV shows growing up. Not only did it have some great young Australian actress and actors, but it was also all about girls and friendship. So, of course, I read the books.  These were such great books to read when I was 10-12. They were fun, easy and always put a massive smile on my face.

Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling: I couldn’t make this list without Harry Potter being on it. There isn’t much more to say than, I grew up either reading the books or them being read to me. I have a lot of memories of Harry Potter entwined with my childhood and that will never go away.

Rainbow Magic by Daisy Meadows: These fairy books were my childhood, I remember reading these late at night with a flashlight because I wanted to know what adventure was going to begin next. This is a great series for those just starting to read novels. It’s a great combination of easy sentences but also pushes some boundaries. I also just love the adventures that the reader goes on each book.

Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney: This one here is from when I was a baby. While I can’t remember too much about it, I know that I knew this one by heart because of how many times it was read to me. And even now I try and sell

Possum Magic by Mem Fox: Now this here is an Australian classic. I think that every child needs to read this in their lifetime. This book just warms my heart. The illustrations in this one – oh gosh they are just beautiful.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown: This is another one of those books that I knew by heart when I was younger. I just love books like this one. They are easy to learn and they tell a beautiful story. I recently brought this one for my cousin and I can’t wait to start reading it to and with him.

Haunted Australia by John Heffernan: This one is a strange one on my list. I’m not a massive non-fiction reader. I much prefer watching documentaries. But this one I read with a bunch of my friends in primary school when I was about 11. We would sit down at lunch and just read it out loud to each other. At first, it was something silly and then it became something fan and what we couldn’t wait to do.

And that is it for this post! What are some of the books that you loved reading as a child? Do we share any of the same? What is the one book that you would recommend to children? Let’s Chat!

Book Review: Superfan by Sarina Bowen

Book Review: Superfan by Sarina Bowen

Superfan (Brooklyn #3) by Sarina Bowen

Pages: 312
Publish date: June 25th 2019

Sometimes lady luck shakes your hand, and sometimes she smacks your face. Sometimes she does both on the same day.

Three years ago I met the most amazing girl in the world. We were both down on our luck. Then I got that call—the one that tells you to get your buns on a plane to go meet your destiny.

But the girl was left behind. I didn’t have her phone number, and she didn’t know my real name.

While I became a professional hockey player, she became a superstar, with platinum records and legions of fans. And a slick, music producer boyfriend who treated her badly.

But fate wasn’t done with us yet. When Delilah turns up at a hockey game, I can’t resist making contact. The internet swoons when I ask her out on a date.

She might not remember me. But her jerkface ex does. He’ll do anything to keep us apart.

Good thing athletes never give up. This time I’m playing for keeps.

Book name:

I received an earc of Superfan by Sarina Bowne from the author in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.

I’m a massive Sarina Bowen fan. So much so that I’ve read all but one of her books, and that’s just because I haven’t gotten around to it. Then I saw that it was about Silas and couldn’t keep my excitement down. But then I heard it involved a celebrity and I wasn’t so sure. However, I can say that I did really enjoy Superfan. And while it isn’t my favourite Sarina Bowen book, I did love reading about Silas.

Superfan follows Silas as one ice hockey seasons comes to an end and another one begins. Three years ago, he thought he meet a girl that would change his life – and she did. But he has to leave. Now he is a professional hockey play and she is a celebrity rocking the charts. When Silas and Delilah have a fiery interaction over social media everything from their past comes back. And let’s just say Delilah still might be the girl of Silas dreams.

BRUNO CERVERA

I didn’t know what to expect going into Superfan, Sarina Bowen had done many ‘celebrity’ romances – but she had done a few. However, I felt that Superfan was different. Delilah was very much an established celebrity in the series and the reader knew how much Silas loved her as an artist. But what we didn’t know was that it went much deeper than that. We didn’t know that he knew her before she becomes a hit. I also find celebrity romance novels a hit or miss for me – sometimes I love them, and then sometimes I just can’t feel it. And after reading Superfan, I’m still not sure how I feel.

I loved Silas – I mean I loved him even before he has his own book. One of the things that made me fall more in love with him – was getting to know his story. I loved finding out who Silas was. Before he was like the awesome – but he really shone in this one. The reader is able to finally understand why he loved Diliah so much throughout Superfan. And gosh was it interesting. I loved the banter that Silas has with basically everyone. He is one of those characters that I was able to easily connect with. And that to me makes a book immediately so much easier to read. I also really enjoyed Silas character arc, throughout the story not only is he, building as a character but also growing as a person.

Arthur Edelman

Delilah was a really interesting character in Superfan. Like Silas, we know even little about her, the reader just knows her as his famous singer that Silas loves. But as the novel goes on the reader gets to Deliah for her and not for the celebrity that she is. Delilah story is pretty harsh and there were times that I just couldn’t get on board with her character. I am not even sure what it was, I just felt a lack of connection. I liked Delilah don’t get me wrong, but there was something keeping me from loving her. In saying that I think Sarina did a fantastic job in Delilah’s character arc. The reader is really able to see her grow throughout the novel and really find who she is.

While I loved Silas and liked Deliah, there was something with the romance that didn’t click for me. I just felt like there lacked a spark. I really enjoyed seeing the start of Silas and Delilah, the flashbacks to before. To people that were both lost and found each other in such strange times of their lives. One of the things with the romance in the current time that didn’t mesh with me was that I felt that it moved fast, without moving fast. I’m sorry if that doesn’t make sense, but the book is set over a good deal of time. But I didn’t feel that we got to see enough of Silas and Delilah in that time frame.

Elizabeth Tsung

One of the things I love about Sarina Bowen is her writing. It’s so easy to fall into her books. I just start reading and keep on going till I finish. She has such easy writing to read. And not in the sense of ‘simple’ words or ‘lack of substance.’ But in the sense that the books just flow. There isn’t a time where I need to step back and really think about anything, the characters, plot and everything in between do all the talking. And she does that again in Superfan.

We get to see some very familiar faces throughout the whole of Superfan. And gosh did I love seeing the gang again. There were so many times that I just smiled because I loved everything that was going on around Silas and Delilah. I don’t want to talk too much about why we see nearly everyone again – but yes! It’s something that the readers have been waiting for so long. And gosh was it great. I do wish that there was more connection between Delilah and the other females from previous novels, I just wanted to see an awesome girl gang of strong women.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Superfan by Sarina Bowen. And while it isn’t my favourite Sarina Bowne book out there, I really enjoyed getting to know both Silas and Delilah. I felt that were fantastic characters, I do wish that I felt more of a spark between them. In saying that I loved watching Silas fall in love – I’ve loved seeing him in other books and now it was his time to shine. He alone just put a smile on my face. If you love celebrity romance – then this is for you. It’s fun, intense and still has that classic Sarina Bowen romance that just works so well for her.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.

Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I onl Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I only ended up reading 3 books in. 3 pretty fun books but one of my slowest readings months in a while.

And I’m going to be honest here it’s because I’ve been constantly reading Heated Rivalry fanfics. 🤷‍♀️ I’m having the best time though.

How was your reading in February? Any 5 star reads?
