Books That Feature Characters with a Disability
If you have followed me for a while then you know that I try to spread as much awareness for disabilities in young adult books as I can. Whether it’s a physical disability or mental health, a visible or invisible, I try to get to talk about it as much as I can.
Today I thought I would share some of my favourite books that feature characters with a disability. Please do note, that I don’t have all have all these disabilities, so I can’t say if they are a perfect representation. But, I do try and do as much research as I can. Like always these books aren’t in any particular order.
A Tragic Kind of Wonderful by Eric Lindstrom: It explores life, family and friendships. A poignant novel that explores mental health and the influence it has on the person, their families and everyone around them. A Tragic Kind of Wonderful is a beautiful story that evokes all types of emotions.
Things I Should Have Known by Claire LaZebnik: It’s real and the story is beautiful. The novel explores the notion of family and finding love. It’s about not just looking after those you love, but yourself. As well as learning that sometimes you need to let go. While I wasn’t a fan of the writing or the voice of the protagonist, Things I Should Have Known is so important and should be read.
Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde: I loved Queens of Geek. It’s a fun but emotional read that is for every pop cultural fan. It explores the notion of friendship and relationships. It’s about falling in love and letting yourself love. It’s about stepping out of that bubble and letting yourself be free. With beautiful friendships and romance, this book is one for everyone.
The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen: I have been falling more and more in love with Sarina Bowen books over this year and I adored The Year We Fell Down and the rest of this series. It’s heartbreaking, but uplifting at the same time. It explores friendship, family and finding yourself when you are lost.
Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare: I don’t think I need to talk too much about this one, because you all know how much I love Cassandra Clare, but I love this series so much. It’s about family, friendship, love on so many different levels.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: Six of Crows has a whole heap of diversity in it from race to disabilities and Kaz seems to be the focus of this. Kaz not only walks with a limp but also, suffers from Chronic pain something that I know a lot about. Kaz also deals with trauma-related mental illness. I think that Six of Crows deals with these different disabilities really well.
Highly Illogical Behaviour by John Corey Whaley: Highly Illogical Behaviour not only deals with agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder, where the person is afraid of leaving their environment that they know. But also deals with wanting to ‘heal’ someone with anxiety and the do’s and don’t of psychology
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare: Cassandra Clare brings the magic of the shadow world into a new light, in a gripping first novel of a new series, Lady Midnight is dark, fun and full of ups and down, it is going to rip your heart apart.
The Things I Didn’t Say by Kylie Fornasier: The Things I Didn’t Say is a gorgeous novel that breaks you down. It pulls at your heart and slowly rips it. With beautiful writing and a slow-burning romance that starts off quick, but takes its time.
