Ten Books I’ve Made My Mum Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone join as you please. This week’s topic is Ten Books I’ve Made My Mum Read.

I took this freebie and ran with it. I don’t speak much about my family here or on social media because I like to keep them private, but if you have been to some events you might have seen my mum with me.

She was the one that got me into reading and as the years went on, I got her into YA. There is always book talk around my house and I am always recommending books for her to read. So I thought I would share with you 10 books that I have convinced her to read. Well, not convince, more like shove the books into her hands and told her to read.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor: I read the first book in this series quite a while before I told my mum to read them. And after we went to see Laini when she was in Melbourne last, my mum picked up the series right away. Now I just need her to read Strange.

Reboot by Amy Tintera: As soon as I finished Reboot I told my mum to read it right away. I knew that she was going to like the book and I wasn’t wrong.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare: Now, you already know how much I love this world and my mum probably loves it just as much as I do. Saying that we both have rune tattoos. Both of us have read every single book in the shadowhunter world so far.

Every Series by Ellie Marney: This took a little more convincing. But I am not even sure why. She loved them and read them one after another.

The Vanishing Game by Kate Kae Myers: I started reading this series as soon as I received it for review. I think because I was so excited my mum picked it up as soon as I finished.

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski: We both love our fantasy. So I knew right away that my mum would love this series just as much as I did. And I was right.

The Thing’s I Didn’t Say by Kylie Fornasier: I talked about Kylie’s books for some time and my mum wanted to see why I loved them so much. And she understood why. Plus we got to hear Kylie speak about this one and mum was intrigued.

The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson: Now I haven’t read any of the books, but from what I had heard about I knew that my mum was going to like it and she loves the series.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer: This was a little harder to convince my mum to read because of the cyborgs and android, as soon as she got into it – she binged the series.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Mass: You might know that I have given up on these books. But before I did, I got my mum to read ACoTaR and she did like it as much as I did.

Books I’ve Love in 2017…So Far

Today, I thought I would share some of my favourite reads of 2017 so far. We may already be in May, but I’ve read over 90 books already and cannot wait to read more. There have been some ups and some downs, that is for sure. However, today is all about those up’s.

I’ve read a range of books already this year from contemporary to fantasy, and young adult to new adult. So there is a range of books on this list and I cannot wait to share, so let’s go! These are in no particular order.

Frostblood by Elly Blake: This was the first book that I read this year and I just feel it in love. Frostblood explores the notion of family, finding out who you are, where you belong and to fight for what you believe. I loved the romance and the world. This debut author has done an excellent job and I cannot wait to see what comes from her next | Full Review

This Beats Perfect by Rebecca Denton: I was so surprised with This Beats Perfect. It was fun, addicting and put a smile on my face. It explores the notions of finding yourself, loving what you do and finding those who will stand by you. It’s about family, friendship and those you love | Full Review
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor: It was addicting. It explores the notion of family, friendship and finding out who you are. With a world that is built with layer upon layer, you will be begging to find out more. With its beautiful writing and characters that will take you by storm, it’s an adventure you want to be on. Strange the Dreamer is poignant, heart-stopping and you will not be able to put it down | Full Review

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: iIf I could give this more stars I would. The Hate U Give is a brilliant and powerful story. It’s heartbreaking, poignant and so so true. It’s a book that everyone should read, and understand. The Hate U Give explores family, friendship and what is right. I wanted to cry, scream and hurt. So I beg you please pick up this book, read it, take it in and understand | Full Review

Him/Us by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy: I have talked about this duology quite a lot recently, but it’s because I enjoyed both of these books just so much. It’s the first NA that I have read that had LGBTIQ+ themes, and it just made me smile so much.
A Darker Shade of Magic/A Gathering of Shadows by V.E Schwab: I had been meaning to read this book for quite some time and I am so glad that I picked it up. It’s everything that I love in a fantasy book. I feel in love with the world, the characters and everything in between.

The Ship Beyond Time by Heidi Heilig: This was a fantastic read. I was taken from the first page and didn’t want to stop there. It explores family and love. It’s about coming of age and discovering who you are. Nevertheless, with its poignant writing and characters that are just fabulous, you want to be on their journey.

Avenged by Amy Tintera: It kept me on the edge of my seat and I didn’t know what was going to happen next. Avenged explores the notion of family, friends, and love. It’s about standing up for what you believe in and what you think is the right thing to do. I love the fierceness, the weakness, the plot.

And that is it for the first half or so of 2017! Wow, what a list already, I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings with some of my most anticipated reads coming out in the next couple of months.

One of my favourite troops is siblings best friend. I have decided to do mini reviews for both Whiskey & Honey and Tequila & Tailgates. Hope you enjoy. There is also a giveaway at the end!

Whiskey & Honey:

Whiskey & Honey by Andrea Johnston follows Bentley Sullivan and Piper Lawrence two people that once knew it each very well, but were never in the same circle. But when Bentley comes back into two everything changes.

Bentley just hasn’t found the one. He’s the good guy, but he wants to. He wants to fall in love and stay in love. When he moves back to his home he thought that he was going to take it slow and not fall in a relationship, but when he kisses a girl at a bar – things very much change.

Bentley was an easy character to get along with most of the time. He was a sweetheart most the time. I liked that he loved his family and thought about their feelings above his own. I love having this young male character that does show his love for his family and isn’t ashamed.

Piper was harder to get along with at times in Whiskey & Honey. For the most part, I did enjoy reading here, but her hesitation really got to me. I loved the friendship with Bentley sister Ashton. Throughout the book the reader is able to see how much her friendship means. I did dislike how much Piper was influenced by those around her and how easy manipulated she was.

The romance side of Whiskey & Honey was fast. Like way too fast for my liking. Bentley and Piper were never more than friends even that before he left and he comes back everything is jumped on. I think that if the romance was slowed down, then I would have really enjoyed the romance between the two. I wasn’t able to really see their connection, at times I thought I could see it, but then it disappeared.

Overall, Whiskey & Honey was an okay read. I liked the family aspects between Bentley and his family. I liked the friendship between Piper and Ashton. However, the romance wasn’t my favourite. I felt that it rush and there was no real connection between the two. Whiskey & Honey explores the notion of family, learning to love and friendship.

Tequila & Tailgates by Andrea Johnston

Tequila & Tailgates:

Tequila & Tailgates Andrea Johnston follows protagonists Ashton and Jameson, who just can’t seem to get along. Ashton has a dig at Jameson ever chance that she can get. Jameson gives it right back and everyone around them is starting to get annoyed. But when a tree falls through Ashton’s house and she needs a place to stay – things just might come to the surface and change.

This was another fall for your siblings best friend type of novel and I do love this trope and while I think it was done sort of okay in Tequila & Tailgates, there book just didn’t hit the right spots.

Jameson, for the most part, was an okay protagonist. He didn’t annoy me as such, but I also didn’t fall in love with him either. I liked that he is going well in in his work and how he is making something for himself that way.

Ashton wasn’t my favourite character in this series. I found her really hard to get along with and very abrupt. I don’t really like the way that she treated Jameson for most of the book, the way that she insults him every time another woman is next to him. It was quite insulting – she was would treat both Jameson and the girls as trash.

The romance was okay-ish. I don’t know how I feel about because I wasn’t a massive fan of Ashton on a whole. There was a lot of miscommunication from the past that did make her the way she is, but it wasn’t acceptable. The reader is able to see that Jameson cares a lot for Ashton, but most of the books she is throwing insults at him.

Overall, Tequila & Tailgates was okay. There were parts that I somewhat enjoyed and some that just weren’t for me. Tequila & Tailgates explores the notion of second chance love, friendship, and family. We get to see some old characters and met some new, but it’s a super quick romance to read if you just want to read something.
