Top Ten New To Me Authors 2016

Top Ten New To Me Authors 2016

Dec 6, 2016

TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone join as you please. This week’s topic is: Top Ten New To Me Authors That I’ve Read in 2016

When I saw the topic for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, I got excited for a couple of reasons.
1. I love finding out new authors.
2. I knew that I read quite a few new authors this year.
However, I didn’t realise just how many new to me authors that I had read. It came down to 48 – and that is

It came down to 48 – and that is a hell of a lot and made this week really hard to narrow it down to 10. But I did it, however, I had to break it up. There are no #LoveOZYA authors on this list simply because I want to do a different post for this. Anyway here are  the top ten new to me authors that I read this year, in no particular order. Side note, these are new to me – they might have been published for years, but I have only read them this year.

ttt-new-1

Kiersten White: I have wanted to read Kiersten White’s books for a while now, but I am glad that I picked up And I Darken. I loved it, it’s what I love. I am so excited for Now I Rise, plus I am going to have to pick up some of her other books.

Jennifer Jenkins: I hadn’t heard of this author until a couple of months ago. but as soon as I finished Nameless, I had to read Clanless.

Josephine Angelini: I’ve been wanting to read the Worldwalker trilogy for quite some time. And I was finally able to this year. I cannot wait to read more. Trail by Fire, Firewalker, Witch’s Pyre.

ttt-new-2

Heidi Heilig: The Girl from Everywhere is one of my favourite books of the year. I adored it and I need book 2 – like now.

Leigh Bardugo: Six of Crows was one of those books that I knew I would love before I even read it. And that was totally true. I love Leigh Bardugo’s writing and beautiful setting.

Courtney Summers: I read 3 Courtney Summer’s books each year and loved them all. They are very hard to read and they will break your heart – but done so well.

ttt-new-3

Ruta Sepetys: Salt to the Sea has to be my favourite book this year – it killed me. I cannot wait to read more of her books. Which should I read next?

Lauren James: I cannot wait to see what else comes from Lauren James because I am 2 books down and loving it.

Danielle Rollins: I wasn’t in love with Burning, however as time goes on,  I want to find out more.

ttt-new-4

Trish Dollar: The Devil You Know took me on a journey and I wanted to read more from Trish Dollar. What do you think I should read next?

And that is it for this week’s TTT. Who are some of your ‘new to me’ authors? Do we share any of the same? Do you recommend me any? Let’s Chat.

Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf, and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbours.
Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the Nameless. Hers is a suicide mission—Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery.
But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe. What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground Nameless insurrection. Zo learns that revenge, loyalty, and love are more complicated than she ever imagined.

Nameless:

I received a copy of Nameless by Jennifer Jenkins from Month9Books for review. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.

I hadn’t heard of this series or the author before I read Nick’s review a couple of months ago. The idea of the world was immediately captivating. And nonetheless, I trust Nick as we both have similar tastes in books.

Nameless follows protagonist Zo a Wolf and Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy undercover. She has to become a slave and join the people that hate her kind. Her clan has put all their trust in her, and she wants revenge. However, unfortunately things don’t go to plan.

When she is at the Ram gate, Zo’s younger sister appears and now they are both putting their lives on the life. When Zo saves a young Ram’s life, she is marked as a healer. And with her growing feelings for a Ram solider, things are not going the way that she has planned. Not only is Zo loyal she is fierce and strong. I loved the fight that she had.

Zo was an intriguing protagonist. She had this strength about her that I admired. A love for her siblings and even essentially her clan. She has given up her life for revenge and not many people can do that – mind you a seventeen-year-old. When everyone around her hates her and marks her Nameless, Zo finds the strength to pull through.

Nameless has the basic revenge story. However, the world that Jennifer Jenkins has built is quite unique.  The reader is on the edge of their seat through the whole story. We don’t know what is going to happen next if anyone is going to find out.

The world building of Nameless was exceptional. The reader is able to find things about the world throughout the story and there isn’t info dump. Which can sometimes happen with fantasy books. Nevertheless, the world was slowly built, and throughout the story layers upon layers were formed.

All the characters in Nameless are excellent. Everyone one is unique and engaging from the get go. I felt myself falling love with everyone.  Gryphon was by far, the most enthralling. The reader doesn’t know too much about him at the start. We are not too sure where he stands and what he believes in. And as the story unfolds, so does he. Gryphon becomes close to Zo throughout Nameless and although it starts as this hate relationship, I love that it turns into something more.

I also love Gryphon’s relationship with Joshua. He cares so much for him and Gryphon only wants him to be strong. Joshua was the comic relief and he was needed. He was so beautiful and charming that I could not help but love him. However, Gryphon didn’t baby Joshua and instead taught him to be strong.

The romance was one of my favourite parts of Nameless. It was the beautiful slow-burning kind, which swept me away. Nevertheless, it was forbidden, swoony and left me wanting more.

Overall, Nameless pleasantly surprised me. Nameless explores friendships, family and believing in yourself. It’s about letting a name define you, and not letting your prejudice get in the way. The combination of a fascinating world, captivating characters and a brilliant plot, makes Nameless a must read for fantasy lovers.

Series I Won’t be Finishing #1

Series I Won’t be Finishing #1

series-i-wont-be-finishing-1

I find it really hard not to finish a book, let alone a series that I have already started. It’s something that I have been against for quite some time. But over the last couple of years, as I have been reading more books, I’ve learnt that I cannot love everything and sometimes I do have to give up. So today’s post is about some series that I most likely won’t be reading more of.

Just a quick note, these are my thoughts and feelings about these series – please respect that.

thorne-of-glass

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas: If you follow me on Twitter, this might not come as a shock to you. I read Throne of Glass last year and I enjoyed it. I didn’t love it, but I was willing to find out more. But, then I started to read the reviews for the other books and the hopes that I had, disintegrated. I am not a fan of what Sarah does with her characters. I feel they do this flip personality wise and there isn’t an inch of who they were in the book previous.

a-court-of-thorns-and-roses

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas: I loved A Court of Thorns and Roses, it was one of my favourite books last year. It was everything that I loved, however, I finished the books with some concerns. When the reviews started rolling in for A Court of Mist and Fury, I knew that the book wasn’t going to be for me. I am totally okay with a character changing who she wants to be with. But, what I hate is when the old romantic interests, is turned into a villain. And the new one, oh forget about all the horrible things that he has done. Sorry, that is me out.

assisans-heart Mini

Assassin’s Heart by Sarah Ahiers: I was so looking forward to reading The Assassin’s Heart when I received it for review. And then I started to read it. It had some really good things going for it, but it fell flat and confused the hell out of me. There was so much going on, where things changed here and there. I don’t even know how Thief’s Cunning, will work out.

Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Vict Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Victoria Wilder’s Bourbon Boys series, and as soon as I heard she was writing a new series, around whiskey and women. Well, hell year. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but after a few chapters, I was hooked.

Wyn is hiding, hiding from everyone, even when she is there. She is hiding behind so much, and damn, I don’t blame her. We don’t know everything from the start, but we start piecing things together, and my heart broke. And I was terrified for her. But she is a Crowne woman, and that means something.

We’ve met Julian before, and while he intrigued me before, I am invested now. He is charming, secretive in the best way and will do anything at this point for Wyn. But he is also lost, and somehow he finds his way to Rumour and back into Wyn’s life.

The romance is hot and steamy and everything that you want. The tension and chemistry in this one is high. Neither Wyn nor Julian wants to really give in or give up on one another, but a lot is standing in their way, honestly, mainly themselves. I just sat there giggling half the time because they are swoon-worthy.

I would say this is the darkest Victoria Wilder book I’ve read, so double-check those trigger warnings before jumping in because there is a lot that happens. And I don’t think it’s going to die down any time soon because these Crowne women are badass, and I know things are only just getting started.

Overall, Rumors & Whiskey is hot and sexual. The tension is dripping off the page, and then you are thrown into the terror and horrors of Rumour. You don’t know what is going to happen next, you don’t know who to trust, and there are so many more secrets that have yet to be revealed. I know I am ready for more. Are you?

Thank you to @atriabooksaus for an earc of Rumors & Whiskey 🥃. I’m in love.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!
