Books I Would Buy Right Now

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. All bloggers are then welcomed to join. This week’s topic is Ten Books You’d Buy Right This Second If Someone Handed You A Fully Loaded Gift Card.

I wish I had all the money in the world to buy books, but with no job and a university student – it’s hard to buy books. So if I had a loaded gift card I would go on a book shopping spree for sure. I would be in heaven. In in my list there are some that have already been published and some that are coming out in coming months.

Buy Now 1

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys: I adored this book, it’s one of my favourite books this year, however I received an e-arc of it, therefore I don’t have one of my book shelf.

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys: Ely over at Tea and Titles loves this one and since it’s by Ruta Sepetys and set during world war 2, I think I am going to love it to.

The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan: This is the only series that I have yet to read by Riordan and I love all his other books, so I don’t see why I won’t love these.

buy now 2

P.S I Like You by Kasie West: It’s Kasie West – enough said.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake: This one sounds like my type of book and I loved Anna Dresses in Blood.

Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes: I have heard so many good things about this one that I cannot help but want it.

buy now 3

On the Edge of Gone by Corinne Duyvis: This one sounds so interesting plus the hardcover is gorgeous!

Summer of Sloane by Erin L. Schneider: It’s set in Hawaii and I have been hearing quite good things about it.

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner: This one sounds fantastic and gosh the reviews have been amazing.

radio silence

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman: I really enjoy Alice Oseman’s first book, and I have been hearing so many good things about this one.

And that is it! What are books that you would buy right now if you had the money? Do we share any? Let’s Chat!

OZYA Author Interview- Paula Weston

I love Aussie YA. I love reading books from authors that live in the same country as me, that know things that people out of Australia might be so confused about. I love how sometimes they can incorporate this into their book and it is fabulous.

So I decided to created a feature where I interview Australian Young Adult authors about their craft, journey and some interesting facts. I thought it was a fun way of everyone around the world to get to know these authors and maybe make them want to pick up their books. And that is what I am aiming to do, spread the word about #LoveOZYA and get everyone reading it.

You can check out my previous interviews with authors like Jay Kristoff, Gabrielle Tozer, last weeks guest Rose Foster and more through Angel Reads.

This week on my #LoveOZYA feature, we have Paula Weston, author of The Rephaim series (2012-2015, Text Publishing).

Paula Weston Author PicHi Paula, and welcome to Angel Reads. First can you introduce yourself to everyone? Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Thanks for having me. I live in Brisbane and write young adult speculative fiction. My four-book series, The Rephaim (Shadows, Haze, Shimmer, and Burn), was first published here in Australia and has now also been published in the UK, US, Canada and Turkey (in translation). It’s a about a dysfunctional society of half-angels and features a lot of sword fighting and sexual tension, with a strong Australian flavour. (And there’s swearing. Quite a bit. The series is definitely aimed at older teens and beyond.)

For my day job, I’ve worked as a print journalist and government media/communication specialist. I still work full-time and write in the evenings/weekends/on days off. I’m an avid reader, lover of animals (with a particular fondness for ex-racing greyhounds), obsessed with good coffee and pinot noir, and am happily married.

What has your writing journey been like? Where did you start? Why?

I’ve been writing stories since I was in primary school. I’ve always loved to daydream and lose myself in fiction. My journey to publication spans six manuscripts, a short-listed short story, and two plays. It was 16 years between my first rejection letter and my first publishing contract.

What was the process of getting your first book published?

I was writing for a long time before I finally secured a publishing deal. I’d come close on previous occasions with other manuscripts, but it wasn’t until I wrote Shadows that I finally had success. Ironically, I started writing that book for fun – for me – after a particularly frustrating round of rejections. Instead of working on the second book of the fantasy series my agent was pitching to publishers, I started playing around with a scene I’d had bouncing around in my head for months. The story and characters flowed. A few weeks later, when I had around 90 pages written, I decided to show my agent. She loved it and told me to keep going.

Once I had a final draft, she shared it with a publisher who had previously shown interest in my work. They didn’t feel it was right for them, but then my agent mentioned it in passing to a senior editor at Text Publishing. Text had few speculative fiction titles on its list at that point, but it turned out the team was looking for YA spec fic that might fit its list.

Paula Weston Books

Long story short, the team at Text liked Shadows and the series concept, and I found myself with a book deal. Needless to say, that was a huge day of celebration in the Weston household. J I don’t think I stopped grinning for a week.

I then really enjoyed the process to publication. The rounds of structural and line edit, having input into jacket copy and catalogue blurbs – and then interacting with bloggers, readers, librarians and booksellers after the first book was released.

I learned an enormous amount about the publishing process and industry, and fell in love with Australia’s YA community.

Was it different when getting your proceeding books published?

I’d roughly plotted out The Rephaim story as four books, which Text Publishing was aware of when I was signed. My original contract was for the first two books; the final two were then contracted the week before Shadows was released.

So the process for getting the subsequent books published was different than if I’d written four stand-alone, unrelated novels. Because of that, I tend to look at The Rephaim series as a single book: it’s one story told in four parts.

The big challenge for me was seeing if I could secure a contract for a book beyond that series. I’ll be honest: it was just as nerve-wracking the second time around. There are no guarantees in life, especially in the publishing world, so I didn’t take anything for granted. I’m grateful, then, that Text Publishing has taken on my new book. It’s a stand-alone spec fic YA thriller scheduled for release next year. I’m pretty excited about it.

Fun Fact- Paula Weston

What was the difference between getting your books published here in Australia and internationally?

Text Publishing picked up the world rights to The Rephaim series, which meant they have on-sold the series to other interested territories on my behalf. I have different publishers in certain parts of the world and each operates a little differently to each other.

While I was closely involved in each step of publication with Text Publishing, I’ve had varying degrees of involvement in cover art, blurb, taglines etc. overseas. (To be fair, my North American publisher, Tundra Books/Penguin Random House Canada, has been very inclusive.)

And, of course, there are the small wording changes that occur in overseas editions to minimise confusion for readers (‘jumpers’ become ‘sweaters’ in North America etc.). But otherwise, the process to print was similar.

It’s almost a year since Gaby Winters was in the car crash that killed her twin brother, Jude. Her body has healed in the sunshine of Pandanus Beach, but her grief is raw and constant. It doesn’t help that every night in her dreams she kills demons and other hell-spawn.

And then Rafa comes to town. Not only does he look exactly like the guy who’s been appearing in Gaby’s dreams—he claims a history with her brother that makes no sense. Gaby is forced to accept that what she thought she knew about herself and her life is only a shadow of the truth—and that the truth is more likely to be found in the shadows of her nightmares.

Who is Rafa? Who are the Rephaim? And most importantly, who can she trust?

Pokemon Go Book Tag

All the graphics were created by Aentee.

I haven’t done a tag in quite a while so when I was tagged by Julia from Picnic Reads, I thought why not. The Pokemon Go Book Tag was created by the lovely Aentee over at Reading at Midnight. Go check out both of the lovely girls.

I’ve loved Pokemon quite a lot as a kid, but then I kind of grew out of it for some reasons, the fact that it’s making its come back and even getting the younger generations involved puts a smile on my face. Anyway, less chit chat on onto the tag.

Pokemon Tag 1VA cover

There are two answers to this one and you probably know both. First Harry Potter, Harry has been with me from the start of my childhood and my life would be a whole lot different if it wasn’t. I did a whole post on my journey with Harry, but I cannot imagine my life without it.

Then it’s Vampire Academy – VA started my love for reading again, during the late stages of primary school I feel a little out of love with reading, but then Vampire Academy came along and gave me a kick in the butt.

I read Vampire Academy back in 2009 and I really have not stop reading since. I cemented my love for Young Adult and books.

Pokemon Tag 2

the little white horseThe Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge, there was a movie that came out a couple of years ago and I feel in love with the magic, characters and story – so I had to pick up the book and it was just as magical.

Pokemon Tag 3

ACOTAROkay I am going to get killed for saying this, but any Sarah J. Maas books. *Goes and hides in a corner* Now if you follow me on twitter, you might have seen me say this before, but I haven’t said it here.

So yes I will not be continuing the Throne of Glass books or A Court of Thorns and Roses – now before everyone jumps. I have read the first book of both these series and loved them – quite a bit. And I was so excited to read the rest, until I read what happen and that pushed me right off.

Pokemon Tag 4Score_CVR.indd

The Hundred Oaks series by Miranda Kenneally. These books have quite a couple of tropes, but still they are fun to read. They all have something different, something fun and they are take you on an emotional roller coaster.

Pokemon Tag 5

The Song of Fire and Ice Series by George R.R Martin. Okay so I have tried to read A Game of Thrones 3 times and each time I’ve put it down, each time because of the size. I will finish this series…sometime.

However, every time I go to read these books, I just stare at the books and stop.

Pokemon Tag 6

disruptionDisruption and Corruption by Jessica Shirvington. I loved these books so much, As soon as I finished Disruption, I picked up Corruption. I could not put them both down. I wanted to know what was going to happen next, especially with the ending of Disruption. Plus it’s Aussie YA.

Pokemon Tag 7winners kiss cover

I ship way to many people for this question so some of recent-ish ones are; Arin and Kestrel (The Winners Trilogy), Maggie and Quentin (Disruption) and Emma and Julian ( Lady Midnight).

Pokemon Tag 8

ruinedRuined by Amy Tintera – holy crap; I loved this book so much – you can read my review.  It has everything that I love in a novel and I could not stop. A couple of hours and I finished it.

Pokemon Tag 9

You should all know this by now – but Cassandra Clare – I wrote a discussion about this sort of thing a couple of months ago.

Pokemon Tag 10salt to the sea

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys – this book was incredible. It was beautiful, captivating, extraordinary. Salt to the Sea is a gorgeous novel that brings to light a catastrophe that seems to be forgotten. With stunning writing and intriguing characters Ruta Sepetys brings a novel that tells a story that everyone needs to read. You can read my whole review, but basically I loved it.

Pokemon Tag 11

shatter meI still have yet to read The Shatter Me Series – just because I haven’t had the chance to buy it yet – I will get on to it at some point in time.

Pokemon Tag 12

Seriously I will buy any book that is a collector’s edition and I mean any. But I want the new Six of Crows Box Set as well as anything Harry Potter.

I have skipped a few, just because I cannot think of anything to answer them with – but I tag anyone that wants to do it. Have fun and lets chat!

Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Vict Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Victoria Wilder’s Bourbon Boys series, and as soon as I heard she was writing a new series, around whiskey and women. Well, hell year. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but after a few chapters, I was hooked.

Wyn is hiding, hiding from everyone, even when she is there. She is hiding behind so much, and damn, I don’t blame her. We don’t know everything from the start, but we start piecing things together, and my heart broke. And I was terrified for her. But she is a Crowne woman, and that means something.

We’ve met Julian before, and while he intrigued me before, I am invested now. He is charming, secretive in the best way and will do anything at this point for Wyn. But he is also lost, and somehow he finds his way to Rumour and back into Wyn’s life.

The romance is hot and steamy and everything that you want. The tension and chemistry in this one is high. Neither Wyn nor Julian wants to really give in or give up on one another, but a lot is standing in their way, honestly, mainly themselves. I just sat there giggling half the time because they are swoon-worthy.

I would say this is the darkest Victoria Wilder book I’ve read, so double-check those trigger warnings before jumping in because there is a lot that happens. And I don’t think it’s going to die down any time soon because these Crowne women are badass, and I know things are only just getting started.

Overall, Rumors & Whiskey is hot and sexual. The tension is dripping off the page, and then you are thrown into the terror and horrors of Rumour. You don’t know what is going to happen next, you don’t know who to trust, and there are so many more secrets that have yet to be revealed. I know I am ready for more. Are you?

Thank you to @atriabooksaus for an earc of Rumors & Whiskey 🥃. I’m in love.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!
