Discussion: Physical book versus ebook

Jan 6, 2014

So I was thinking the other day what kinda of discussion I should have. I have been thinking about doing these sort of post for a while now and I just never could think of anything that I thought would make a good discussion but then I saw a post on facebook not sure as to where about Physical books and ebooks and to which is better and my head just started spinning with all my ideas, my thoughts and then bam! I thought this would make a perfect discussion post.

There is a long debate at to which is better, the physical book or the ebook. Even though I do prefer the physical book, the ebook is just as useful, even maybe a little more. There are pro’s and con’s for both.

Pile of Books    ebook

There us heaps of advantages of both Physical books and ebooks.

Pros

Physical Books: There are many pro’s of Physical books, either paperback or hardback which ever that you prefer you can get. I love seeing books lined up on my shelf, I love counting the books. I love seeing the series standing next to each other. I really like the way the books smell and feel in my hands. I also love going to book stores and just looking at all the books – I could stay there for hours. Pricing can range with physical books but you can go to op shops and find some really great books there for some amazing prices, when I go to my local op shop the books range from about $3-$4 which is pretty awesome if I say so myself. You can also get some great deals on online book shops.

ebook: You have all the books that you own on 1 device that you can pretty much carry anywhere. I have a Kobo Mini and I really like it. It fits pretty much in my hand and perfectly in my handbag. If you have a Kindle or a Kindle Devices which I do have as well on my phone you can get heaps of free or 0.99 books which is pretty awesome. You can have hundreds of books on 1 device. You can read the book pretty easy of the train or on a aeroplane pretty much anywhere. Some books or novellas only come in ebook form.

But theses Pros weight up with Con’s

Con’s

Physical Book: They are pretty expensive sometimes, especially if it’s a new release, or hardback’s. I know in the US they mainly just release hardbacks first so if you are waiting for a books you have to pay up to $20+ sometimes. You need heaps of room to store the books. I know at the moment I am in need of a new book shelf – there is no room on mine at all. Books are pretty heavy so when you are travelling you cannot take or buy that many. You also need to have quite a big bag to fit the book when you are going to work, going on the train etc.

ebooks: You need to buy the device and sometimes they are expensive, yer you might save after you buy it but you still need quite a bit to buy it. Also sometimes ebooks are more expensive then the actual physical book. My Kindle version of The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead cost me more then my paperback version which confused the hell out of me. You would think because they are not using paper, ink, time to make the book, it would be less expensive.  Also you need to charge your device, it only last a certain couple of hours and then you have to let it charge for a bit, which a physical book you can pick it up and read it for as long as you want.

download

I brought my Kobo Mini so I could get books that only come in ebook form, it is really helpful in that way, also when I’m away from home I don’t need to fill half my bag with books. Even though I do like my Kobo I would pick a physical book over it any day. There is just something about them. That is not saying I don’t use my Kobo because I do. I was once having this conversation on Twitter and someone said to me that they would never buy an ebook, I asked why and they said because the Author doesn’t get the money or something like that. I was just so confused about what this person knew about books. They author still gets their money for the book they sold in what ever format it is.

What do you think of the debate of physical books vs ebooks? Leave a comment down below or make a blog post about it. I would love to hear others opinions

Book Review: The Golden Lily (Bloodlines #2) by Richelle Mead

Synopsis

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives. Sydney would love to go to college, but instead, she’s been sent into hiding at a posh boarding school in Palm Springs, California–tasked with protecting Moroi princess Jill Dragomir from assassins who want to throw the Moroi court into civil war. Formerly in disgrace, Sydney is now praised for her loyalty and obedience, and held up as the model of an exemplary Alchemist. But the closer she grows to Jill, Eddie, and especially Adrian, the more she finds herself questioning her age–old Alchemist beliefs, her idea of family, and the sense of what it means to truly belong. Her world becomes even more complicated when magical experiments show Sydney may hold the key to prevent becoming Strigoi—the fiercest vampires, the ones who don’t die. But it’s her fear of being just that—special, magical, powerful—that scares her more than anything. Equally daunting is her new romance with Brayden, a cute, brainy guy who seems to be her match in every way. Yet, as perfect as he seems, Sydney finds herself being drawn to someone else—someone forbidden to her. When a shocking secret threatens to tear the vampire world apart, Sydney’s loyalties are suddenly tested more than ever before. She wonders how she’s supposed to strike a balance between the principles and dogmas she’s been taught, and what her instincts are now telling her. Should she trust the Alchemists—or her heart?

Review

Richelle Mead you have done it again. You have blown me away with your amazing writing that seems to captivate me. Golden Lily is much more fast paced then Bloodlines which I loved. It is more interesting and more suspenseful which I think Mead does best. There is excellent character development of pretty much all of the characters through out the whole novel, as the novel goes on each character grows more and more. I really like Sydney from the moment we meet her in the 4th Vampire Academy Book, Blood Promise and through Bloodlines I grew to like her even more, but with the confidence she grew through this book, I grew to love her. She starts to think more about the Alchemist, about how far they take things, about what they say isn’t that true. She goes against what she believes in for people she doesn’t even like that much. Adrian just, what can I say! I thought I loved him a lot already but the way he acts, especially towards Sydney makes my heart melt. I think the problem with Adrian is that he cares too much for people that let him down. He cares for Jill and then slowly for Sydney. Just all the little things he does for her and she doesn’t realise his feelings, it made my heart flutter. The interactions between Adrian and Sydney, oh my. Like the moment after they go to meet Adrian’s Dad it was just beautiful.  There is so many heartfelt scenes between them. Not just romantic but those scenes that are much more. They know each other like they have known each other forever. They understand each other like no one else can. I also liked that we got to see more of the Vampire Academy character that we know and love.  We got to see a lot of Dimitri, I just couldn’t keep the fangirl in myself down. I love that we got to see the side of Dimitri that we didn’t get to see that much in VA. We get to hear more about him and Rose, and their relationship and if you didn’t know it already we get to see that he really does love Rose. Eddie, oh how I feel sorry for him! Just why can’t he be happy for once, that’s all I want for him.  He always wants to make others around him happy but never himself and when he does it backfires on him. Angelina became bearable to a point but then what she does, just makes me so angry and frustrated, I can’t really blame her to a point because she doesn’t really know how to live. She cracked me up so many times, she is so childlike in a way.  Jill. Let’s talk about Jill. Gosh, I just feel so sorry for her. She just wants to have a normal life, have a boyfriend, have fun, but because of that fact that she is in hiding she can’t do that. She has been thrown into this world, where she really doesn’t have a say and I love that she somewhat keeps that Jill from VA that we all know and love.  I loved that Richelle brought out the element of magic in the book, it was totally cool and awesome, and the fact that Sydney can use it, made it that much awesome.  Richelle Mead knows how to compel an audience; she knows how to draw them in.  She creates suspense.  Her writing is so captivating; you are so into the story that, I felt everything. I think maybe because I have been with most of these characters for so long that I am so attached to them. I mean, wouldn’t you if you read have been reading about them for about 6 years.  The Golden Lily brings out the best in Mead, there is suspense, dramatic changes, things happen that I didn’t even know could or would. She created more of this already fascinating world. Each book just seems to get bigger and better. This is an honest review and my love for Vampire Academy and Bloodlines does not influence my review it in any matter. I just cannot wait to see  more Adrian and Sydney moments that make me want to laugh or cry.

 Quotes;

“But … Why? Why would you want to do that” “Why?” he asked “Because it was the closest I i could get to doing this” He reached out and pulled me to him, one hand on my waist and the other behind my neck. He tipped my head up and lowered his lips to mine’   ‘But perhaps the best part of all was that I, Sydney Katherine Sage, guilty of constantly analysing the world around me, well, I stopped thinking. And it was glorious.’ “She’s not the one I’m always thinking about anymore. I don’t see her face when I go to sleep. I don’t wonder about … you inspire me in every act, every word, every glance. I look at you and you’re like… like the lights made into flesh….you are the most beautiful creature I have ever seen walking this earth.” “This ‘lifestyle’ and ‘belief system’ you’re defending, have used you and keep using you. They treat you like a machine, one that’s not allowed to think – and you’re better than that”

I Give 5 Stars to The Golden Lily.

What did you think of The Golden Lily? Did you like it as much as I did?

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
