New Adult Books That I’ve Been Loving

New Adult Books That I’ve Been Loving

Feb 28, 2017

New Adult Books I've Recently Loved

Over the past 2 years or so I’ve started to delve into New Adult. I’m turning 21 this year and I thought it was time to try and read a little bit older. However, I’ve only made it to NA. But, I love it. I find that when I just want to relax and take a step back these are the books that I pick up.

So I thought why not share some New Adult books that I’ve read recently and loved. And I am sorry that the list isn’t by a range of authors, but I’ve found some that I like and can’t stop reading them.

Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy: This is the first m/m New Adult book that I’ve read…and I feel in love. I laughed, cried and totally feel in love with the characters. They just seem to pick you up and take you on a ride with them.

Us by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy: The sequel to Him and just like it I feel in love. It follows the same couple through thick and thin. With their relationship being tested in so many ways.

Good boy by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy: This one is a companion book to the Him duo and gosh did I love it as much. We see characters that we’ve already fallen in love with, but we also fall in love with more.

The Deal Series by Elle Kennedy: I recently re-read this series and I forgot how addicting they are. How caught up I get in the characters and how they interaction with one another. These books are fun, sexy and have boys that play ice hockey. I am totally in. Nevertheless, this is a 4 book series about best mates and their girls.

A Thousand Letters by Staci Hart: This book torn me apart.  A Thousand Letters is a heartbreaking read and will leave you an emotional wreck. It’s about family, friends and second chances. It’s about forgiveness, letting go and falling in love | Full Review

And that is it for this post. Have you read any of the books on my list? Did you like them? Are you planning on reading them? Do you have any New Adult books that you think I might love? Let’s Chat!

Book Tag: I Dare You

Book Tag: I Dare You

I Dare You Tag

I haven’t done a tag in a while, so when I was tagged by the lovely Bec, to do the I Dare You Tag. I thought this was the perfect opportunity. I don’t know where this tag originated from. If you do know please do tell me, so I can link them in the post. Anyway, let’s get the show on the road.

Rules

You must be honest
You must answer all the questions
You must tag at least 4 people

1. What book has been on your shelf the longest?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone – 2001 edition. Obviously, it’s not the first book that I ever owned, but it’s the first book that’s been on my shelf the longest. To give a little context, I was 5 years old. It’s not in the best of conditions, but I could never get rid of it.

2. What is your current read, your last read, and the book you’ll read next? As of 14/2

Current Read: Off The Ice by Julie Cross | I am liking it okay so far, nothing has really hit me yet.

Last Read: The Goal by Elle Kennedy | This is a re-read. Felt like some contemporary NA and I can’t go wrong with Elle Kennedy.

Next Read: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas | I’ve been trying to hold off reading this one closer to the publishing date, but I can’t do it anymore. I need to read this beauty.

3. What book did everyone like, but you hated?

Okay so I didn’t exactly hate the book, but I don’t adore the books like everyone else. And that has to be the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. I go into more details about why I won’t be continuing the series or any of her other books.

4. What book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t?

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin: I’ve tried reading this book 3 times now and I only ever get halfway. I don’t even understand why I love the TV series and I so want to get into the books.

5. What book are you saving for retirement?

Probably the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’ve had the books for some time now, but when I first tried to read them, it just didn’t seem to work for me. I love the movies, so I really want to at least read the books.

6. Last page: read it first, or wait ’til the end?

It really depends. If I am terrified about how the book is going to turn out, I will read that last page. Especially if it’s from a series that I love and it’s the last book.

7. Acknowledgment: waste of paper and ink, or interesting aside?

I really like the idea. I don’t always read them. But, if I find the author interesting or the book captures me. I like to read something about them, about how it came to be.

8. Which book character would you switch places with?

Rose Hathaway from the Vampire Academy series.  Some crap does happen. But she is bad ass, knows how to defend herself, and well has Dimitri. Like who wouldn’t want him.

9. Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life? (Place, time, person?)

Vampire Academy. This book started my obsession with YA. It’s what got me back into reading book after book. I ways always reading before, but Vampire Academy made reading a part of my life.

10. Name a book that you acquired in an interesting way.

I can’t even think of this. I don’t think I ever got a book in an interesting way. What defines interesting when you are a reviewer.

11. Have you ever given a book away for a special reason to a special person?

I am always giving books away to my cousins. A few of them love to read and I know that sometimes I know I won’t read a book, but they will love it. Sometimes they just borrow the books, but there have been times when I just can’t help, but give the book to them.

12. Which book has been with you most places?

My ebooks. They are on my phone so they are taken everywhere with me. From all over Australia, across the sea and even to Hawaii.

13. Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad two years later?

No. Those books that I disliked a lot in high school – I still pretty much dislike. They are all classics unfortunately, I just can’t like them.

14. Used or brand new?

Both!  I loved new books, but I am always taking trips to the op shop and seeing what I can pick up. And sometimes they are in amazing condition.

15. Have you ever read a Dan Brown book?

No. I enjoy the movies, but I don’t think I could ever get into the books. My mum on the other hand really likes them.

16. Have you ever seen a movie you liked more than the book?

Not that I can think off the top of my head. It’s very rare that I like a movie more than the book. Most of the time they just never capture the same magic as the book does.

17. Have you ever read a book that’s made you hungry, cookbooks included?

Yes. Any time a book mentions food. But one that just made me want to cook heaps of food would have to be Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler.

18. Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?

In the blogging world, there are a couple of people that I know if they loved a book, then I will most likely feel the same. There are those that dislike certain aspects of books like me, and if they didn’t like the book, I will probably feel the same. It’s the way that this community works you click with people. Ely from Tea and Titles is right up on that list of people.

19. My question is: Is there a book out of your comfort zone (e.g., outside your usual reading genre) that you ended up loving?

I actually don’t know about this one. I rarely read out of my comfort zone. I’ve been reading YA since I was 12 years old and haven’t deterred from that. But, I guess whatever was my first NA book, that I read. I love reading NA now.

And that is it for the I Dare You, Tag. Do you have some of the same answers as me? Are we totally opposite?Nevertheless, thanks for checking out this post. Let’s Chat!

How to Begin a Young Adult Novel.

How to Begin a Young Adult Novel.

How To Begin A Young Adult Novel

Now, I know there are fair few aspiring novelists out there. I know there are a lot of people who love the written word. That love young adult fiction. But, the question is where do you begin?

Today, I thought I would share ways on how to begin your YA novel. What should the first page, the first chapter consist off? What are the ways to pull the reader in from the get-go? To capture them, to intrigue them. There are many published young adult novels out there, thousands upon thousands. So you have to stick out in the crowd. You have to be unique. So here are some ways to begin your novel in style:

Waking Up in a Young Adult Novel

Waking up is something everyone does, so why not open your YA novel with it. Your protagonist has to sleep, don’t they?

Ahh, what a horrible day it is. I have to wake up and go to school. No, Mum, leave me alone. Just a little more. No turn off the lights. Oh, the sheets are now being pulled off me. I don’t want to go to school.

That’s a usual YA protagonist waking up, opening scene. Your protagonist is a teen, so they don’t want to get out of bed. They don’t even want to go to school. Thier parents have to come in and take the sheets of their bed. It;’s normal and must happen in an opening scene.

Looking in the Mirror

Now you are in a young adult novel, your protagonist has to look in the mirror. So let’s open the novel with your protagonist looking in the mirror, staring at themselves.

They are normally in the clothes that they are wearing for the day. Seeing how it looks on them, how it fits on their body. They aren’t happy with their body, so they wear baggy clothes to hide how they really look or they don’t care how they look. Or, they need to look perfect. The clothes that they are wearing needs to be right, nothing out of place. A dress, or maybe a skirt and a top.

Now your protagonist has to play with their hair. There are two ways that this scene can go. They can hair make sure their hair is perfect. Either dead straight without a kink in sight, or have beautiful curls. Or your protagonist can ‘not give a shit’ and just pull their hair up in a messy bun.

First Day at School

If you are writing a YA novel, most of the time there is ‘a first day of school’ involved. Whether it’s at a new school or the start of a term. It’s bound to happen.

If it’s your protagonist first day at a new school, everyone has to stare at them. They have to watch them walk up to the front door. There has to an over excited person willing to take your protagonist around the school. They have to stand up in front of the class and introduce themselves. And don’t forget about the ‘mean girls,’ they have to have a nice first meeting.

If your protagonist is just having their first day of a new term, then they have to meet up with their friends…if your protagonist has them. If not your protagonist has to walk into school with a hoodie on and go straight to their locker to collect their books. There also has to be a ‘mean girl’ in this scenario has well.

Waking from a Nightmare

Another scene to start with is your protagonist waking from a nightmare. Sweat has to be running down their forehead. They have to huff and puff. There has to be a few tears running down their face. They have flashbacks of the dream that they just had. It’s about something horrible and it’s going to play out the entire novel. You can’t forget that your protagonist now has to get up from their bed and get a cold glass of drink. Then they go back to bed and try to sleep.

Explain How Your Protagonist Looks

Now, you can’t have a YA novel without the protagonist explaining how they look. It’s normal, they have to tell the reader, speak to the reader. And again it can go a few ways.

First, we have the protagonist that loves how they look (which is totally fine), they normally have long blonde or brown hair. Sometimes it curly, but most of the time it’s straight. They have the ‘perfect body.’ Tall, long legs, small waist, big boobs. All the guys look at them when they walk by – and they love it.

Then we have the protagonist that doesn’t really care about they way that they look, however they need to explain to us how they do. This protagonist also has the ‘perfect body.’

Then we have the protagonist that doesn’t think they are beautiful. They have straw-like hair, and their skin is white as paper. They perspective themselves as ugly, But really they again have the ‘perfect body.

***

Okay so, I hope by now that you know that this post isn’t supposed to be taken seriously. I’ve just given you an insight on the YA beginnings that I really don’t like to see. It’s happened, over and over again. I love something different, something unique – and none of these are.

It doesn’t mean that if a YA novel starts like this it’s bad, or horrible. But, after a while, reading book after book with essentially the same opening. It gets boring and repetitive.

Hopefully, you have enjoyed this post and agree with me. What are some of YA beginnings that are overused? Do we share any of the same? Let’s Chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
