Discussion: Casting Adaptations

Discussion: Casting Adaptations

May 2, 2015

discussion

If you follow me on Twitter you have almost certainly have seen me rant about this. But with all the negatively that I’m seeing in Facebook comments and on twitter I feel that I need to say something.

Casting for a movie or TV show is certainly not going to be 100% spot on. There are few reasons why and I am going to try to tell you why.

Primarily since an author doesn’t create a character from a person that already exists, the person that they cast will not look exactly the same. The author creates a character from his or hers mind so when somebody is cast as them, they aren’t going to have the same appearance, as this character is not real.

Another issue is that people also create their own version of a character when they are reading. This could be totally different from the author’s formation of this person. All of us, imagine characters in diverse ways.

People cannot go and accuse casting directors, anyone connected to the adaptation or even the author for that matter that who was cast, is horrible and isn’t that character. Since that is who they pictured.

If you don’t know what has happened with the recent casting of a few key characters in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, new TV series ‘Shadowhunters‘ then all you need to do is go and check on twitter or on Facebook posts about it and just look in the comments.

Three characters have been cast at the moment. When Dominic Sheerwood was cast as Jace the response was pretty acceptable for the most part. But last night when Izzy and Simon were cast there was mayhem and people were and still are horrible.

Alberto Rosende was cast as Simon and after merely seeing just a head shot (that is professionally taken), people judged him. Even before they had even saw him in character. However since then people have calmed down, only after they were able to see him with glasses in his introduction video.  Yet people are still saying that he is not “geeky looking.” Yet the thing is, the only tributes that make him geeky are his glasses, his clothes and how he acts but once he turns into a vampire he changes. He loses the glasses and becomes “hot” and Alberto has it all.

Now to Isabelle. Emeraude Toubia is absolutely, stunningly gorgeous.  Yes her skin may be darker than what is alleged in the books but she has the appearance of Izzy in ever shape and form. There are edits already with Emeraude in black clothes and tats and she looks pretty damn awesome.

People likewise keep on going, on about how they are using unknown actors. However, yes they may be unfamiliar but for all we could know, they could be unbelievable actors.

Also when people say that the person cast doesn’t have the exact hair or eye colour, I just believe that these people don’t use their brain. Like seriously its called hair dye (do people think that my hair is naturally pink) and also there is a thing called eye contacts.

The thing that is irritating me the most throughout this whole thing, like a fly that doesn’t want to leave you alone. Is that people want the movie characters back. People need to get it into their thick skulls the movie cast are not going to come back. I don’t understand how small-minded some people are. I am not trying to offend people here but it is not going to happen and I will tell you why.

The movie was not good! Simple, the script was to cliché. A lot of the cast could not act and I am sorry to say that. Don’t get me wrong I love Jamie and Lily and all the cast, but they were just not right (and I am not talking about looks here). There was no spark between Jace and Clary, and that did hinder the movie because the romance plays such a vital role.

I know that some people love the old cast and that is totally acceptable but you need to get over it. They will not be in the TV show. The movie and the TV series are two very separate things and starting with a new cast and crew is a good way to go in hope of a successful series.

Truly, I cannot wait to watch Shadowhunters and see all the action if anything goes by how they are casting, I think the books are in respectable hands and I am hoping that the script and the rest of the cast add to it. Shadowhunters is set to hit out TV screens early 2016.

Stay in tune with the show and like their Facebook page, twitter and Instagram. Also stay in touch with me by following me through bloglovin’ and liking my Facebook page and twitter.

Discussion: Why do I love Harry Potter?

Discussion: Why do I love Harry Potter?

Feb 5, 2015

If you didn’t know, today is Harry Potter Book Night. If you don’t know what that is. Check out my introduction post here.

1509783_1389841101322015_8947194396043491000_n

I cannot begin to explain how much Harry Potter means to me. There are so many ways to describe it, but one that comes to mind is my life.

Harry Potter came out in 1997, just a year after I was born. So I didn’t get to read it as soon as it came out. But just before the Philosophers Stone was brought to the big screen, my mum started to read the books to me. And let me tell you. I loved them.

Since that moment my life has all been Harry Potter. I started to read the books by myself when I was able to. When I was about 9-10 years old. I am not sure and I did need some of my mums help for some of those difficult words.

I not only loved the books, but the movies as well. And it wasn’t just me. I also got my sisters and brother into the movies as well as getting my brother to read the books. (At the moment he is reading Goblet of Fire).

DSCN1149

I remember the first time I watched Philosophers Stone was when it was out at the movies and my parents took me and my younger sister to the drive-ins to see it. I think I was about 5 at the time and I feel proud that the only part I was scared of was the scene where Voldy goes to kill Harry. Just that opening gate scene. I have no idea why it was only that scene and not when we see the two faces. For the last 3 movies, I was watching the movie the first day it was out and the last 2 I went to midnight sessions.

A funny fact that watching the Philosophers Stone caused. Well I used to be sacred or nervous to look out of the car at night because I always thought Dumbledore would be standing under a street light. Tell me I am crazy, please.

But even though the movies were wonderful and I still watch them time and time again. They are not as magical as the books.

I don’t even know how many times I have read the Harry Potter books. There is something about them, I just never get bored reading them. Pretty much all my books are first versions, so they are not in the best condition. But I love that about them. It shows how much I love them.

I remember when The Order of the Phoenix was about to come out at the movies, my library teacher had a Harry Potter class. It was awesome, we got sorted into houses. Names were spit out of the Goblet of Fire for the ‘Triwizard Tournament,’ it was simply the best thing ever.

One thing about the books that I do remember was, when I was reading the Deathly Hallows I cried a river. Also my book may have ended on the other side of the room, when a certain someone died (I don’t want to say who, because some people have not read the books or watch the movies). My mum still laughs till this day because I did this.

I don’t know how many times I have cried while reading the books. No matter the numerous times I have read them, I still will cry.

What the series has taught me.

The books have also taught me so much through all different characters, events just everything.

Luna is most likely my favourite character because she taught me that being who you are is much more interesting than trying to be someone else.

Hermione taught me that it’s okay to be smart and to stand your ground. Don’t let people put you down just because you rather have your face in a book than go outside.

Harry taught me that family doesn’t have to be just from blood.

Dumbledore taught me that love is the greatest weapon.

And Ms J.K Rowling taught me to fight. Fight for what you believe in. Fight for what you love and fight for who you love.

My Collection

My love for Harry Potter spreads to my room and my collections. I have a full set of books and I really want the new UK/AUS set in hardcovers but just so expensive. I will hopefully get them one day.

I also have a Ravenclaw banner, time turner as well as figurines and a collection of movie stills as postcards and wands that I collected.

Furthermore, out of all these experiences nothing beats the moment when I met Evanna Lynch. If you didn’t know Evanna plays Luna Lovegood. That day I was so excited. I brought my ticket to take a photo with her and get her signature. First I stood in line to get a photo with her and let me tell you the line was long and I was there for a pretty long time. When I stepped into the room and saw her I nearly fainted. After shaking like crazy, my sister and I took a photo with her. I walked out the room and started to cry like crazy. I could not believe it. It was pretty much the most remarkable moment ever.

Capture

If you have no realised already Harry Potter has changed my life and I would not change that for anything. What about you, how has Harry Potter changed your life?

Discussion: Series vs. Stand Alones

Discussion: Series vs. Stand Alones

Jan 21, 2015

discussion

There has always been the discussion of if Stand Alones or Series are better. But in the end it all comes back down to personal opinion. Someone can’t tell someone to like certain books because everyone is different really. They can like whatever they want.

When I am taking about series here I am talking about more than one book, whether it’s a trilogy etc.

I am one of those people that adore series. I think they are absolutely amazing. There is something about reading deeper and deeper into a world each new book. Finding more about characters, discovering new characters. Series does something that stand alones just can’t.

A series can go into so much more depth. The characters can be explored more, the world can. I love being on a journey with characters watching them grow and a series lets you do that.

Lets talk about Harry Potter, readers are able to watch an 11 year old boy, grow to be a 17 year old. The reader is able to watch Harry learn what friendship is, what love is, experience heartbreak and depth. If there was only one Harry Potter book it would have never been as magical and beautiful as it now and will forever be.

Another thing that a series does is let the readers (most of the time) feel closure and satisfaction. A stand alone can leave everything open in the air. But because most series span across a couple of years, readers are able to get a little closure.

edit w

One of my favourite, but worst, things about series is the wait. Having to wait for the next book in the series to come out. Months upon months sometimes even years. But when you get that book into your hands the day it comes out, stay up all night and day to read it. Now that to me is an amazing feeling.

Even though I adore series sometimes I do think stand alones work better for certain stories and authors. John Green for instance. The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska are beautiful stand alones that don’t need more books to follow to make them any better.

Nether less it is all up to the reader on what they do prefer to read. No one can tell them what they should like better or that they should not like a certain type of book. It all depends on the person and how and what they like to read.

You can see that I prefer series over stand alones, but what do you prefer?

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
