Books I Love That Take Place in Australia | #LoveOzYA

Books I Love That Take Place in Australia | #LoveOzYA

Mar 27, 2018

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone join as you please. This week’s topic is Ten Books That Took Place in Another Country.

I took a little liberty with this weeks topic. If I went books that didn’t take place in Australia, I could talk about 90% of YA. So I thought I would share some of my favourite books set in Australia. Anyway, here we go.

Every Breath by Ellie Marney: I adored this series. It’s one of my favourite #LoveOzYA books of all time and better yet, it’s set in Melbourne, Australia. It’s such an intense, fun and emotional book, but I also recommend it to everyone and anyone.

Secret Science of Magic by Melissa Keil: The Secret Science of Magic is an adventure. It’s a beautiful story of coming of age, growing up, and learning. It’s about letting go, and not just finding yourself, but believing in who you can become. It deals with the notion of first love, leaving high school, friendship, family and so much more. It’s one of those books that you pick up and just fall in love.

The Yearbook Committee by Sarah Ayoub: The Yearbook Committee is enchanting, you will be torn apart and put together over and over again. You will be taken on a ride with 5 students in their class year of high school – so be prepared.

The Last Days of Us by Beck Nicholas: The Last Days of Us was a raw and emotional read. It tells a story of death and grief. What it’s like to lose someone at a young age and have your whole life change. It’s about friendship, family, and the good and bad. The Last Days of Us explores life at it’s best and worse.

Zac and Mia by A.J Betts: This book broke my heart into so many pieces. I loved it so much. It’s such a beautiful novel that is very real. It doesn’t shy away from death or sickness. Plus it’s set in Perth, Australia, which is very rare.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley:  Words in Deep Blue is a poignant, beautiful story with fleshed out characters, gorgeous writing and a concept that is for every book lover. It’s about love, friendship, family and grief. You are taken on a journey through up’s and down’s and pulled into pieces.

When Michael Met Mina by Randa Abdel-Fattah: When Michael Met Mina should be on every high school book list in the country. The younger generations need to know that sometimes the government and media lie and manipulate the sense of asylum seekers. They need to know that most of these people are not illegal or jumping the queue, they are just simply people looking for freedom, safety, and peace. It’s an important story to write and share.

Life in Outer Space Australia

Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil: Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil explores friendship, first love, family and what it is like to keep everything bottled in. It shows that sometimes love needs to start off as a friendship and that the bonds of friends are not always broken – even if there is some turbulence on the way. In a beach-side Australian town it’s fun to see things that are similar to how I grew up.

Frankie Australia

Frankie by Shivaun Plozza: A brilliant debut novel that captured my heart. It’s a story of heartbreak, belonging, finding yourself and what it is to be a family. It captures Melbourne as Melbourne from the language to the setting, it brings to light that sometimes when you think that you are alone, you are not alone and all that you need to do is let them in. Frankie by Shivaun Plozza is a must read.

And that is it! What are some of your favourite books set in Australia? Do we share any that’s the same? Is there a book that you love set in another country? Let’s Chat!

Ten Books That Surprised Me

Surprised in a good way

Surprised Me Books

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) by Holly Black: I loved this book. So much. I’m not a massive fan of fae and haven’t had many good experiences in the past but, I adored The Cruel Prince. It’s addicting, dark and messes with your emotions. It’s a world of court intrigue and the conflict between fae and humans. It explores the notion of being human and the emotions that come with it. It’s fast-paced with many twists and turns that throw you off | Full Review.

Surprised Me Books

Sleeping Giants (Themis Files #1) by Sylvain Neuvel: I wasn’t expecting to like this book at all. Sci-fi isn’t really my thing and I have had a lot of hits and misses. But all I heard about Sleeping Giants were great things. So I picked it up via audiobook and loved it! It’s one that I always recommend now at work to those looking for new science fiction.

Surprised Me Books

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab: Again this is another one that everyone seems to really enjoy and I really don’t have a reason why I hadn’t picked it up. But after I did I just loved it. I love the world, the characters, the relationships. Everything just fit together so nicely.

Surprised Me Books

Letters to the Lost (Letters to the Lost #1) by Brigid Kemmerer: This sounded like my type of read when I heard about it, but I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. It’s a story about grief and dealing with those who you have lost. It’s about understanding that sometimes isn’t what you think they are. It explores the notion of family, friendship and finding yourself. It’s heartfelt, heartbreaking, but also uplifting. It’s one of the tissues | Full Review.

Surprised Me Books

Frostblood (Frostblood Saga #1) by Elly Blake: Again like Letters to the Lost, I knew I was going to like this, but what surprised me was that I ended up loving it. With a mix of everything I love. Frostblood explores the notion of family, finding out who you are, where you belong and to fight for what you believe. I loved the romance and the world | Full Review.

Surprised in a bad way

Surprised Me Books

Paper Princess (The Royals #1) by Erin Watt: I don’t really know how to feel about this. I love Elle Kennedy’s books and I have a big handful of them. So it really surprised me when I really disliked Paper Princess. I didn’t like the characters, the plot, most of the book truly. I did continue the series and enjoy it a little more, but it’s not my favourite out there.

Surprised Me Books

The Pearl Thief (Code Name Verity 0.5) by Elizabeth Wein: I had heard so many amazing things about Elizabeth Wein. The Pearl Thief had the ingredients for things that I love. But it was such a letdown.  It explores the notion of a girl in her time and where she stands. It explores family and friendship and standing up for what you believe in.  I hope that I will be able to read more of Wein’s books soon and hope that the hype stands true | Full Review.

Surprised Me Books

The Whole Thing Together by Ann Brashares: This is another author that I heard great things about the author, and the premise of the book really drew me in. So I was surprised when I didn’t really like it.  The Whole Things Together is a poignant novel that just didn’t hit the right spots for me. With far too many characters and storylines to keep track off. I was confused most of the time. It explores the notions of romance, family and finding yourself |Full Review.

Surprised Me Books

The Impossible Story of Olive in Love by Tonya Alexandra: I really didn’t like this book. I nearly hated it. Like a lot of these books, it had all the right ingredients. But gosh there were so many things wrong. Olive as a protagonist didn’t sit well with me, as well as the romance. The plot was intriguing and I kept reading for that alone. I was hoping that there would be some resolution, but I was left disappointed.

Surprised Me Books

Caraval (Caraval #1) by Stephanie Garber: When I finished this book, I liked it more than I do now.  After I’ve had time to think about it, things weren’t just adding up for me. The world was interesting and so were the most of the characters. But together it just didn’t fit for me.

Books I’ve Decided I’m No Longer Interested In Reading

Books I’ve Decided I’m No Longer Interested In Reading

Feb 20, 2018

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone join as you please. This week’s topic is Books I’ve Decided I’m No Longer Interested In Reading.

There are countless books out there in the wild and there are many on my TBR – you can check out some of them here. But there are some that over time, I’m no longer interested in reading. There are different reasons why I’m choosing not to read them anymore. Sometimes it’s because it’s no longer something I’m interested in, or I’ve heard things that have turned me off. So today I thought I would share some of the books I’ve decided I’m no longer going to read.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Mass: I have to admit, I loved the first book. I loved the world, the characters, and the plot. It was a very close 5 star read for me. Then I let it all settle in and I wasn’t really enjoying the foreshadowing that was present. And then the reviews starting to trickle in, and I knew the book wasn’t going to be for me.

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J Mass: Much like A Court of Mist and Fury, I enjoyed the first book in this series and then I found out what happened. Personally, I am not a massive fan of what Sarah does with her characters. I don’t like where their arcs go and how things end up between characters. I just think her writing and novels aren’t for me.

The Crown’s Fate by Evelyn Skye: I wasn’t a massive fan of the first book. There were many things that happened that I wasn’t a fan of. I didn’t really like the magic of the world or the romance. I felt that there was so much leading up until the end – and then it faded.

The Harper Effect by Taryn Bashford: I think I would have liked this books, it’s a YA sports romance. And if you know me well, then you know I love sports romance books. However, after the author had altercations with another blogger on social media, I can’t support the book. There was a lot going on and things were said and done that I didn’t agree with.

Legendary by Stephanie Garber: I am still not sure how I feel about this book. I didn’t love Caraval, but I also didn’t hate it. It’s one of those books that I can easily forget. So I’m not too sure if I am going to continue with the series. I want to know what and how things happen. So maybe one day.

A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi: I really didn’t want to put this one on my list, however there is a high chance I won’t read it. I liked the first book enough, but I didn’t love it. I really enjoyed the world and writing, and it was so beautiful. But I wasn’t a massive fan of the plot and the characters. So I’m not to sure if I want to continue.

Desolation by Derek Landy: I read the first book in this series a couple of years ago now and really enjoyed it. However, I just don’t think I would be into it now. The main protagonist is on the younger side and I just don’t think we will click.

Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts: This was on my TBR before it even came out. It sounded just like something that I would love. But, then it took ages for it to come out, and the reviews weren’t that great. So I just never picked it up, maybe one day I will.

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller: This is another one that was on my TBR before it even came out. And then I just never picked it up. It’s another one of those books that got mixed reviews and I could not decided if it was for me. So at the moment I am not going to be reading it any time soon.

Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows: This is probably on the top of this list that I would pick up. I love the cover, the story sounds interesting. I just haven’t heard much about it and I am hesitate to pick it up.

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
