Top Ten 2017 Covers That I Love

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone join as you please. This week’s topic is Top Ten 2017 Covers That I Love.

This week is all about the covers with the freebie. I decided to talk about the covers that I am currently love in 2017. Some of these books have already been published, some are coming out soon, while others aren’t coming until the end of the year.

But, something about these covers has caught my eye and I hope to get to all the books soon. Like always they are in no particular order.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor: The UK/AUS cover for this one is stunning. As soon as I saw it I feel in love with it. The gold against the blue is eye-catching and works so well with the book itself. | Review

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: While I am not a massive fan of the AUS cover, the US cover is so striking. The white cover and the POC character on the front just works so well. Also, the fact that she is holding a sign – yes totally works. | Review

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon: This cover is so eye-catching. The colours work so well together and I love seeing a POC on the front cover.

Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare: I just love the covers of this series so much. I love the colours and the little hints that we get on each of them. Cannot wait to see what the last cover in this trio looks like. | Lady Midnight Review

Now I Rise by Kiersten White: I have a dilemma I love both the US and UK/AUS covers of this series so far. They are both very different but work so well with the series in different ways. I love how simple the US covers are through – with that a little hint of cover. | And I Darken Review

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco: THIS COVER! The colours, the contracts. I just love it so much. I so want a hb of this one.

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich: This is such a fun cover. I love the contrast of colours. The type, the way that the faces are drawn. I love the red and black.

The Color Project by Sierra Abrams: This cover! Again the colours, but also the type of this one is stunning.

Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology: This is quite similar to The Color Project. But again, the colours just work so well in this one.

Cold Summer by Gwen Cole: This cover – yes please. Again the colouring works so well. And the two images that are reflected off each other. Works so well with the story.

Ten Things That Will Make Me NOT Want To Read A Book

While the week I talked about things that will make me want to read a book, this week is all about the things that turn me away. Some of the things on this list you will know straight away as I am very vocal in my dislike for them. Anyway, let’s get into it. Like always these are in no particular order.

Girl changes to be noticed: This is another thing that I have noticed both in YA and NA and it’s just not for me. If the protagonist changes for themselves, then hell yeah I will give it a chance. But if the protagonist changes so a guy can like her – then no thank you.

Love Triangle: This is the one thing that would immediately make me not want to read a book. I just can’t deal with it. Sometimes if it’s done well, I could slightly get over it. But for the most part, I don’t like to read books with love triangles in them. I’ve stopped mid-series because of this and I am even sorry. I also really need some more YA fantasy without a love triangle – please.

Full on Alpha Male: I’ve been reading a lot more New Adult lately and something that I have noticed is the presence of the alpha male. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love when a character is protective over the one that he loves or at least likes. But, there is that step too far and I just can’t do it.

Too much hype: I am not one for hype. I’ve read quite a couple of books because of the hype around then and some of the time I hated the book. I guess this also happens with a lot of people, but I’ve been moving away from a lot of hyped books recently and I love it.

If people I trust don’t like it: This is another game changing when picking up books to read. If I’ve read a review or someone that I know has similar taste as me, hated the book. I will most likely not pick it up. Now, this doesn’t happen all the time. Because I sometimes love books that they hate. But if I see in their review things that I don’t like, I will most likely not pick it up.

Female protagonist always needing saving: Females don’t need a knight in shining armour. Yes, I love when a love interest can swoop in and save the one that they love. But I love my females strong and who can stand up for themselves. It’s empowering and just so lovely to see. If the female protagonist is always getting saved, the book is not for me.

Racism/Ableism/Homophobic: Books, especially YA are allowed to talk about these things. But if there is racism, ableism, homophobia etc and it’s not said as bad – then no thank you. People learn from books, they understand through books. And if a book is showing these as good things, then I don’t need it in my life.

If the protagonist has traits that I hate: I don’t even know if this one makes sense. But if I read a review or start a book and the protagonist just doesn’t sit right with me, then I am not going to read the book. The protagonist makes it or breaks it. If a protagonist isn’t good, then most likely I am not going to enjoy the book.

Sounds too similar to something else: This is another big one for me. If I am reading a blurb or a review of a book and it sounds too much like something else – then I will most likely not pick it up.

If a book is by an author that I don’t like: This one may seem weird, but if I’ve read multiple books by an author and I didn’t like any of them – then there is a high chance I won’t pick up another book by them.

Ten Things That Will Instantly Make Me Want To Read A Book

I normally pick up a book for a couple of reasons, but there are some things that will make me want to pick up a book instantly. And today that is what I am going to talk about. Like always these are in no particular order.

Bad Boy: If a book has a bad boy there is a very high chance that I am going to pick it up. I don’t know what it is. I love that they can have this tough exterior, but on the inside, they are soft and just fall in love. I think my love for bad boys has to come from me reading lots of ‘bad boy’ stories on Wattpad. I can’t help it.

Friends to Lovers: Again Wattpad has a lot of influence of my contemporary reads. And this trope just reels me right in. I love that a pair can already have this connection and then slowly things start to change and I love seeing them fall in love.

Hate to Love: This is the opposite of the above, but it’s just as much fun. I love how a couple can hate each other so much. But underlining everything, they are like each other and can connect over things they didn’t think that they could.

Magic: I didn’t hesitate to add this one to my list. I’ve always loved magic in any form and there is a very high chance that I will pick up a book instantly because it features magic. From witches to simply elemental powers, I love it all.

Bad Ass Protagonist: If the female protagonists is up there fighting, I am so for it. I think that is why I love Vampire Academy so much. I want more and more books like this. We need no men to fight for us!

Sports: I don’t know if you guys know this but I love sports. Well, I like to watch sports. I can’t play all too well. If you follow me on twitter then you know AFL season is back and I so ready. So that is why if a book has some sort of sport attached it to, I will mostly likely want to instantly pick it up.

Cassandra Clare: I don’t think I need to explain much here, if Cassandra Clare has written the book then I am going to read it, basically instantly. In saying that check out my Infernal Devices read-a-long that starts this month

Protagonist with a Disability…or close to the protagonist: At the start of the year I spoke about my struggle with Chronic Pain and because of that and other medical conditions I have, I love reading books with disabilities. If a book features a protagonist with a disability or someone from their family, I will want to instantly pick it up.

Family Orientated: I am a very family orientated person. I am the oldest of 3 siblings, and the oldest of all my 1st cousins. I love caring for them. So when a book has a very close family, I will love it. You don’t see it much in YA and I really want more of it. I love more love with families, more caring.

Best Friends Brother/Brothers Best Friend: Yes, this is on my list. Like, how could it not be here? It’s adorable and cute and just makes me squeal. I love the interaction, the outcomes, the reactions. It’s just a ride.
