Synopsis

In BREAKING THE RULES, Katie McGarry continues the story of Echo Emerson and Noah Hutchinson (PUSHING THE LIMITS) as the pair set out on a road trip so Echo can chase her dream of becoming an artist and for Noah to meet his remaining blood relatives, but as the realities of the world outside the walls of high school begin to press down on Echo and Noah the couple tries to discover if their love is strong enough to survive.

BREAKING THE RULES is a full length novel that starts a month or so into the trip Echo and Noah take after they graduated from high school. The time period of this book is between PUSHING THE LIMITS and DARE YOU TO.

Here is the last 8 protagonists and a little bit about then, that will battle if off, for the title of: Angel Reads’ favourite

1. Hazel Grace from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green:

TFIOS

Hazel Grace Lancaster was diagnosed with cancer at a young age, and had essentially stopped living life. Until Augustus Waters comes along and teaches her that life isn’t about what happens to you, but what you can make of it. Granted an infinity within an acute number of days, Hazel is taught to open her eyes, heart, and mind to the life she could have, if only she let herself have it.  Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16 year old bookworm with an oxygen tank. She’s hasn’t got magic powers or awesome physical abilities (especially not with lung cancer restricting everything she does) but has a strong will to prove herself against the battles cancer presents her with. She’s okay. Hazel is a caring and quite witty character who strives through the book, to prove to the world that she can fight the stereotypes people put against cancer patients.

2. Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins:

The Hunger Games

Living in district 12, one of the poor districts, her life has not been easy and after the death of her father and subsequent mental breakdown of her mother she becomes independent and disillusioned. The most important thing in the world to her is her sister, Primrose, she would do anything to protect her, and proves this. She did not ask to become a heroine or a symbol and yet when she is thrown into the limelight she picks herself up and keeps going.  Katniss thinks for herself and doesn’t let others make up her mind for her.  She isn’t perfect . . . far from it, in fact. But she is strong, she is a provider, she is a survivor. She does what she needs to do in order to protect those who love her and those she loves. She is funny, too. She is a reluctant face to a rebellion, but she does what she has to do. In the arenas, in the capital, in life.

3. Clary Fray from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare:

256683

Clary Fray is a 15 year old, red head girl living in New York, where an eternal battle between good bad threatens the safety of the mundane and magical worlds on a regular basis, she thought she was living in a normal word. She could not have been more wrong. The daughter of two Shadowhunters, people tasked with protecting the world from the supernatural, Clary is far from anything normal. Armed with a best friend and extremely cute Shadowhunter, Clary faces danger at every turn, growing into and becoming a truly badass heroine that can take care of herself. . She may be small, but has a special ability to create her own magic runes and her daring and willingness to protect those she loves gives her spunk that every heroine needs.

4. Noah from Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry:

pushing the limits

On the outside, Noah Hutchins seems like a jerk. He appears to be self-absorbed with an air of arrogance about him, emphasized by the fact that girls are always throwing themselves at him. Noah uses girls and drugs, pretending not to care about either one.  However, on the inside Noah is a very different person.  As we get to know him and we learn about the pain he conceals, it is evident that his attitude is only an attempt to ease his afflictions.  The other side of Noah emerges throughout the book, surprising Echo and the readers alike.  He is loyal to his friends. He protects and defends those he cares about and he has a kind heart.  Echo brings out this side of him as they become allies, trying to face their own demons and find healing together.

5. Adrian from Bloodlines by Richelle Mead:

8709527

Adrian Ivashkov is the lovable bad-boy with quite the reputation. He’s a Moroi (good vampire) of a Royal bloodline, and specialises in a rare magic called Spirit that is slowly driving him insane. He is constantly underestimated by others, but as the story continues, we see that Adrian is one of the strongest characters in the series. He loves fiercely, is deeply loyal, and has a wicked sense of humour. It’s these traits that often see him take the fall for others – and consequently get hurt badly – but they’re also the traits that see him through to the other side, making him even stronger.

6. Aria from Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi:

10756656

Aria is so strong considering that all things she thought we true aren’t. She went through so much at the beginning both mentally and physically and it was only in the first few chapters and she grew more and more in strength throughout. We also see the change in Aria over the course of the story. Aria is totally different at the end of the novel from the start.

7. Sydney Sage from Bloodlines by Richelle Mead:

8709527

Sydney Sage is usually the brains behind the operation. Whether that operation is hiding wanted fugitives, keeping Royals in witness protection at all costs, plotting sinister revenge against those who dare hurt her loved ones, or hunting down corrupt Alchemists who are hellbent on making her life miserable. She herself is an Alchemist (human who has been raised to keep Vampires a secret from other humans), one who over time comes to realise that everything she’d grown up being told, was a lie. Sydney is a book-smart girl, but watching her learn to think for herself and break free from the shackles of her past is fascinating.

8. Rose Hathaway from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead:

18660669 (1)

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir (half Vampire, half human) who is fierce, butt-kicking, and has a sharp tongue that often gets her into almost as much trouble as her fists do. She always rushes into situations headfirst with no regard for possible consequences to her actions. Initially Rose seems to think that she is the best of the best, but as the story moves forward, she fast discovers that she has a lot of growing up to do, and a lot to learn. She has a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and is a bit of a heart-breaker. Rose does grow into a strong character though, who is more than capable of taking charge. Rose becomes a fighter, she doesn’t take no for an answer and always with every inch in her body tries and protects the ones that mean the world to her, even if she doesn’t know it at the time. Rose may do things that don’t always end up with the best results but she does have good intentions.

And remember next Saturday voting beings!

Top Ten Bookish Things That I’d like to Own

Apr 15, 2014
toptentuesday
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. All bloggers are then welcomed to join. This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is:

Top Ten Bookish Things (That Aren’t Books) That I’d Like To Own (new bookshelves, bookends, cool bookmark, a bookish shirt, etc. You can add things you DO own if you want).

1. New Book Shelves: At the moment my books are ending up everywhere. They are stacking up on each other and there is still no room at all. So I am in need of a new one. I don’t want nothing to fancy just one that can fit my books.

2.Kindle: I do have a Kobo mini at the moment, but I would really like a Kindle that I can use for multipurpose things and with me going to University next year therefore catching the train everyday a Kindle would be much easier to handle. Which one do you recommended?
3.  Movie/Book Room: This has already started actually, after I was lucky enough to pick up a Stand Up from Vampire Academy and as  is in my living room place upstairs I thought maybe  I should make it to a book and movie room. It’s not the biggest space but we can work with it. So I want to collect more things for this room.  If it doesn’t happen now, I hope it does when I get my own house.
4. More Book Related Posters: This sort of goes with number #3. I need book poster for my book and movie room don’t I. I love posters and art work and after picking up a few on the weekend as well at supanova, it’s going to be awesome I hope.

5. Official Lord of the Rings Arwen Evenstar Pendant: I am a massive LotR (movie) fan. Sadley I haven;t read the books as I tried to read them when I was young but had so much trouble with it. Hopefully I can soon. Anyway I love Arwen and I adore her necklace so much, which also means that I would love to own one. I love the one from LOtR Jewelry.

7. My Book Related tattoo’s: Well in a couple of months I will be getting my first tattoo. I cannot wait till I am 18 so I can finally start getting my tattoo’s I am super excited and cannot wait.
8. Book Nook or a reading room: I have mentioned this a few times but I either want a book nook in the wall upon a window or a reading room. Even better both in one room.

9. Book Travels: I know I cannot own them, But I would love to go to the Harry Potter Studio Tour, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and to New Zealand for the Hobbiton Movie Set Tours.

10. Book Swag: I love book swag, bookmarks, buttons, cards just anything. I love collecting them all.

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
