Starring Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, Harry Shum Jr.

Episode Reviews: Season 1 | Season 2

The New York Institute is under attack as Valentine’s plan for The Soul Sword is getting dangerously close to coming to fruition. The Shadowhunters must act fast to save their loved ones and the rest of the Downworld.

Meanwhile, some of the Downworlders have their own plan to stop Valentine and their target is Clary.

By the Light of Dawn:

Wow, what a way to have a mid-season finale. Throughout the whole episode, I was on the edge of my seat, not knowing what is going to happen next.  After last week’s episode, I knew that we were in trouble this week. Valentine has Simon and downworlders still want Clary dead – and Valentine is crazy.

In By the Light of Dawn Valentines plans come in full force. Valentine and his followers attack the New York Institute trapping everyone inside. While Clary, Luke. Jace and Magnus try and figure out a way to stop Valentine from the outside.

Clary

This was one of my favourite episodes for Clary. She really showed her strength, her determination to save Simon. I loved the grit she had when she fought. I admired that she would take a chance on her life for a world that she hasn’t been in for long. We really get to see her stand up for what she believes in and doesn’t let people around her make the decisions.

Jace

Wow – what an episode for Jace. If you thought he was tested in previous episodes then you have another thing coming. Jace not only has to deal with what is going on around him, but also what is going on inside him.

Again like Clary, Jace showed really power and strength in this episode and I loved it! We also get to see his vulnerable side – his weakness.

Those last scenes with Valentine – yes! They showed his skills as a fighter, but also how much he does care for others around him. Especially those that mean a lot to him.

Alec + Magnus

I am dead. They have killed me. Goodbye.

Okay, let’s be serious. YES. YES. YES. I loved Alec and Magnus from the start, but as the series has gone on, I feel more and more in love. They are both so innocent with each other and even though Magnus has had years of experience and I mean years – this is new. That end scene between them. I cannot wait to see what 2b brings.

Valentine

I love Valentine. I mean I hate him, but he is also such a great villain. His manipulative and evil and just works so well in this world.

The way that he plans things and we think they aren’t going well, but he always has something up his sleeve that just changes everything.  And how the episode ended for Valentine, I am not too sure that it’s over for good and I cannot wait!

Ending

Wow. What an intense episode and the last 20 minutes, kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what was going to happen next.

That moment with the soul sword – wow – that was intense, but also really good and brings so much more for 2b. All the emotions of everyone are brought to the surface and shadowhunters and downworlders alike are ready to fight to save their lives.

The ending scene with the sword – we all know who that is!

Overall

This was a great ending to 2a and I cannot wait to see what 2b brings. We know that Sebastian will be there ready to cause trouble. And we know that Valentine is gone just yet – plus I reckon the Seelie Queen is about to start causing trouble.

What did you think of By the Light of Dawn? Did you enjoy it? I know it’s a long time to 2b, but what are you looking forward to? Let’s Chat!

Bound by Blood

Shadowhunters: Season 2 Episode 9

Episode Name: Bound by Blood
Release date: 27th February 2017
Running Time: 42 minutes
Starring Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, Harry Shum Jr.
Directed By: Matthew Hastings
Watch: Freeform (US) – Netflix (Worldwide)
Episode Reviews: Season 1 | Season 2

With word getting out that Clary is a key part of Valentine’s plan, the Downworlders are at odds on how to handle the issue. But when Iris activates her blood oath, Clary has more to worry about than hiding from Valentine and the Downworlders.

Meanwhile, Isabelle and Raphael get closer as Alec tries to figure out what’s going on with his sister.

Bound by Blood:

I feel that each week I’m left on the edge of my seat. It’s getting more and more intense as the season goes on. And with the mid-season finale next week, I can only guess what is going to happen. In Bound by Blood Clary feels the after effects of her blood oath with a warlock and everything goes downhill from there.

On the desperate hunt for Madzie; Jace, Clary,  and Simon run into a little trouble with downworlders of all kinds. After last week’s confession from Clary and Jace, the words gets out and downworlders want Clary dead.

Meanwhile, Izzy is becoming more depended on vampire blood and Alec has become concerned about her behaviour.

Simon and Clary

Simon and Clary really explore their relationship in this episode. It was really sweet actually. We get to see Clary have some fun – which she hasn’t really this whole series. The chemistry between them was totally adorable.

When they were both sitting on top of the van, it felt raw. Thier emotions were on full display and I loved seeing. I love this relationship even though it’s only going to be for a while. They need that from each other.

Izzy and Raphel

Now let’s talk about this one. I actually quite enjoy it. Two very different people, that somehow are similar to one another. I think both are them are relying on each other. Izzy for her fix of Vampire Blood and Raphel for his fix of human blood.

I felt for both of them in this episode, letting their need for a fix clouds both of their judgments.  There was a line that Magnus said in this episode that really stuck and I think explains it so much.

Simon and Jace

Simon and Jace have always had a rough relationship as both have strong feelings for Clary – making everything tense around them. And just like the books, it’s fun to watch. They both care so much, but Jace having to step back because of Clary being his sister has changed the game.

In Bound by Blood however, we see these two come together and work with one another. It was great to see the banter between the two and even though at times they hate each other – they both care for Clary.

Downworlders

All hell has broken lose with Downworlders and everyone is on edge. A war is going to break out soon, it is coming. We already know that there is tension between Downworlders and Shadowhunters and I think the next couple of episodes is going to test that.

Alec

I felt this episode focused a lot of Alec and his strength. Throughout the series, we have seen him stand his ground a little here and there. But in Bound by Blood he became the Alec we know and love.

I love his strength in this episode, his determination. His love for his family is above anything else. The way that he stood up to Aldertree – hell yeah.

Overall

I enjoyed this episode. Tensions were high and everyone was on edge. Everyone is out to kill one another and you have no idea who to trust. Plus that ending – if you’ve read the books, you know what’s going to happen real soon. And I am excited.

Shadowhunters: Season 2 Episode 8

Episode Name: Love is the Devil
Release date: 20th February 2017
Running Time: 42 minutes
Starring Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, Harry Shum Jr.
Directed By: Ben Hernandez Bray
Watch: Freeform (US) – Netflix (Worldwide)
Episode Reviews: Season 1 | Season 2

Tasked with arranging his brother Max’s Rune Ceremony, Alec decides this would be the perfect opportunity for his family to get to know Magnus. But with tensions flying among the different Shadowhunters, Max’s big event quickly becomes an evening where they all must face their biggest fears.

Meanwhile, Simon makes a bold move as Isabelle finds an unlikely new ally.

Love is the Devil:

This season, each episode is getting better and better. I am starting to really love this series and can’t wait to see what to going to happen next. I’ve seen a lot of hate recent and although it’s not the best series out there, it’s by far not the worse. I learned a while ago not to compare it to the books because it’s not. If anyone read Vampire Diaries or Pretty Little Liars you know that they are very different from the show. I’m really enjoying what they are doing so far, and each episode brings more of the books in, slowly, but it’s happening.

In this week’s episode Love is the Devil Max Lightwood has returned from Idris and is ready to perform his rune ceremony.  But tension is high between the Lightwood family and Alec is in charge of Max’s party. To try and fuse the tension he asks Magnus to help with the party. But, the party doesn’t all go to plan. Meanwhile, Simon and Clary have a heart to heart and Isabelle starts to spiral.

Simon and Clary

Simon and Clary take a big step in Love is the Devil. Thier relationship has been building up for the last couple of episodes. The audience already knows that Simon is very much in love with Clary, but after last weeks talk with Maia, everything starts to pay off.

Even though I adore Clary and Jace together, Simon and Clary need to happen. Even if it’s only for a little while. They need to explore this relationship with each other. Thier relationship also helps Jace explore himself and his feelings for Clary.

Lightwoods

There is a lot of tension going on with the Lightwood family. It’s heartbreaking to see,  but I also loved it at the same time, because they are staying true to the books in that manner. It’s the first time Maryse has been back in the institute for a while and everyone is on edge.

Alec and Izzy don’t like the way that Maryse treated Jace when the Clave where after him. They have always seen Jace as part of the family and by her acting with Clave – it hurt them all.

Party

To try and fix the gap between Magnus and Maryse – Alec gets Magnus to help with his rune ceremony party. And well Magnus knows how to put on a show.

I liked the tension between Magnus and Maryse – as it reflects a lot of the book. How cold she is at times and even though Magnus tries, she just doesn’t like him.

Then something crazy starts to happen and I loved it. We really got to know the characters in this episode – their fears. What they don’t want to hear most. And it was so well played. I sorted guessed what was happening, but it still worked so well.

Valentine

Valentine is up to something and something big. I am loving Alan Van Sprang as Valentine, he has this nature about him that screams Valentine and evil. Because the writers are taking risks and not exactly following the book, it’s interesting to see what they are going to make him do – and I am excited.

Izzy

I’ve talked about Izzy the last couple of episode, but this week. I felt her. Izzy is struggling, breaking, but we also see this tough girl – suffering. I really like to see how far this is going to go, what’s going to happen to her next.

Overall

Love is the Devil was a pretty damn good episode. I like how week after week I am loving it even more. I do wish that the rating and how people are watching grow. I am just seeing too many complain and I am over really.

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
