TV Review: Shadowhunters 2 x 07 ‘How Are Thou Fallen’

Luke’s sister shows up at the Jade Wolf claiming innocence about the recent attack. But with Luke not trusting a word Cleo says, he finds himself at odds with Clary who sees an opportunity to get to Valentine. Yet how far will Clary go to prove she is right about Cleo?

Meanwhile, Simon gets dating advice from a surprising source as Isabelle takes a dangerous path.

How Are Thou Fallen:

So I just finished watching this weeks episode, and I am not 100% sure about how I feel. There were parts that I love and parts that didn’t sit right. How Are Thou Fallen follows the outcome from Iron Sisters last week, where Sister Cleo (Lisa Berry) does something that we didn’t expect and reveal that she is or was a member of the Clave.

The Clave is on high alert from her disappearance and the death of another sister. With shadowhunters on the look out and Aldertree back in Idris. She is bound to be found, but by who.

Also in this episode, we see Simon (Alberto Rosende) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) in a one on one. As Jace is left with the impact of ‘leaving’ the institute. While Izzy ( Emeraude Toubia) starts to fall from grace.

Cleo

Wow. This was an intense episode, last week was the calm before the storm. And Cleo is the eye of this tornado. With the clave on high alert, things turn a little messy in How Are Thou Fallen.

We don’t know much about Luke’s sister Cleo. She is an original character of the TV Series and I don’t know what to expect from her. I think that is amazing, but dangerous at the same time. Cleo could do anything, and she does. I found Cleo very interesting and Luke’s responds to her missing is unusual, but as the episode goes on we understand why.

Alec and Izzy

Oh, these two warm my heart. I love the relationship they have in the books and it just works perfectly on screen as well. Alec’s (Matthew Daddario) talk with Izzy about Magnus and other things – was a delight. The banter and sibling love shone through.

Izzy’s addiction

A big part of this episode is focused on Izzy and her new addiction. Like I’ve said before, I like that they are doing this. They are giving this mundane aspect to shadowhunters. It shows that they are real. Her addiction also shows us her interaction with others and how that two is falling apart.

The scene with Magnus where he mentions Jem. I might have jump and a big smiled appeared on my face. Will is the only one out of the trio that hasn’t been mentioned yet.

I am really excited to see where this storyline takes out – because when the other’s find out, it’s going to explode.

Simon and Maia

Now I am not too sure how I feel about these two just yer. Yes, they do need to get together. But, I feel they are rushing it way too much. Things need to happen with Clary (Katerine McNamara) first; before this even happens.

However, they are totally adorable together. I love Simon’s shyness and how Maia (Alisha Wainwright) is so outgoing, but they complement each other so well.

Jace Gone Wild

This wasn’t Jace’s episode, however, the audience gets to see a side of Jace that we only slightly see in the books. Jace’s insecurities and doubts get the better of him in How Are Thou Fallen. Fallen from grace, he starts to spiral.

Jace feels as though he has nothing left and it’s true in a way. He has been in the institute his whole life, he knows nothing else. So when that is taken away from him, he was nothing left to do. And it’s killing him.

At the end of the episode, we see a little light at the end of the tunnel, but let’s see if it’s here to stay.

Clary

Clary isn’t doing that crash hot either. I felt like she was lonely this episode. All her friends and including those she has made had abounded her in a way. Jace is everyone, Izzy is focused on her addiction, Alec – well they are not even that close of friends, and Simon is on a date. All she has left is Luke, and that isn’t going exactly how she wants it to go.

Valentine

How Are Thou Fallen is the first time that we see Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) in a couple of weeks and of course he has plans up his sleeve. What he does in this episode was so intriguing and took me by surprised – but I loved it.

That last scene – holy. Next week is going to be crazy with that alone. I am so ready for it. I’ve said this before, but I really enjoy Alan as Valentine and he plays him so well.

Overall

I enjoyed this episode and I am nervous but excited to see where it takes us next. I’ve watched a quick trailer from next week – and it looks like an intense one. But, I am so ready. And we are nearly halfway through the season – noooo.

Clary and Isabelle are sent on a mission to meet the Iron Sisters in order to find more clues about Valentine’s plans.

Iron Sisters:

There will be spoilers from previous episodes and slight spoilers from this weeks.

After the last two episodes, I felt this type of episode was needed. Iron Sisters was a breather, it wasn’t an episode that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. It’s one, where the world of the show is built and character development is in the works.

Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia) are sent on a mission to find out more about Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) and his interest in the mortal instruments. Both girls travel to the Iron Sisters and find out more about the shadowhunter world.

Meanwhile, Alec (Matthew Daddario) and Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) go on their first date, Simon (Alberto Rosende) and Maia (Alisha Wainwright) go on the hunt for Luke and it isn’t Jace’s day.

Iron Sisters

For the past couple of weeks, there have been hints that we will be going to see the Iron Sisters and it finally happened in this week’s episode. I loved this part of the episode. I loved Izzy’s want and the way that she looks up to them.

There were parts of the Iron sisters that I loved, how everything looked. But not how they looked. I just felt they lacked something and I can’t pick what it was.

While Clary and Izzy are at the Iron Sisters, we are able to see a little history about the soul sword. I loved not only how they did it, but the way that everything joined together.

We also get out first look at Luke’s sister Cleophas (Lisa Berry). Although she’s a new character to this series, I felt that it worked quite well and it will defiantly add tension as the series goes on. Especially with the ending of this week’s episode.

Clave

The Clave is full force in Iron Sisters through Aldertree (Nick Sagar). The audience is able to see the power that the Clave holds on shadowhunters. The dominance that Aldertree presence is scary as hell, and I can see it falling to pieces as the season goes on. Although we haven’t seen the Clave as a whole yet, I think that Aldertree is a pretty good representation of it.

Luke

This week’s episode was hard on Luke. Tormented with grief and his werewolf nature, he loses control. So not only is her struggling with the death of Jocelyn, but him being a werewolf.

I think this episode’s focus on the werewolves, gave the audience an insight on how downworlders work and how they fit into the shadowhunter world.

Simon and Maia

I loved the scenes between Simon and Maia. It was nice to see a little lightness in this episode and the interaction between these two was so good. The banter was pretty similar to the books and flows nicely to where the books go with Simon and Maia and their relationship.

Through Maia, we also get to see her side of being a werewolf. Her struggle, her heartbreak. But, the audience is also able to see that a pack is also a family and most of the time they look after one another.

Alec and Magnus

These two finally went on their first date! And it was as awkward and adorable as I imagined. Magnus has so much experience while Alec has none, and it was so cute them trying to step around each other. I love that Magnus calls me Alexander as hits the mark with the books. Also, there is also hints of there being tension because of the many people Magnus has been with over the years.

Jace

In this episode we also see Jace struggling with not only Aldertree, but the rest of the institute. Aldertree is treating him like crap, he doesn’t want him there and because of that his peers, the people that he fights with are second guessing what he does.

I could really feel Jace’s emotions in this weeks episode, it was tough and hard. But, I do feel that it will add tension to the show.

Izzy

For the most part, I really like what they are doing with Izzy. The addiction is something very different but works so well. It shows that sometimes shadowhunters are no different to mundanes. However, there was a time in this episode where Izzy was ‘listening in’ to a conversation with Clary and it just didn’t sit with me right.

Overall

I really enjoyed this episode. Nothing ‘intense’ happened until the end, but I was interested all the way through. Iron Sisters really worked on the characterisation of nearly all out main characters and I loved it. The audience was able to sit back and take the world in. Get to know it a little more.

After the recent attack on the Institute, the Shadowhunters are left devastated and wounded. Trying to regroup, each of the Shadowhunters deals with the situation their own way. Meanwhile, Simon moves home but finds it is not so easy to pull off his new life with his family around.

Dust and Shadows:

There will be spoilers from previous episodes and slight spoilers from this weeks.

Wow- What an episode. I think that this was one of the most intense and gripping episodes of the series to date. It was heartbreaking, heart-wrenching and torn me into pieces.

Dust and Shadows followers the aftermath to Jocelyn’s (Maxim Roy) death. Not only has this rocked Clary (Katherine McNamara) to the core, but everyone else too. Stricken with grief and guilt, Clary wants to bring her mother back from the dead and a warlock is the only way to help. In this episode, the audience is able to see Clary’s ignorance to the shadowhunter world and essentially ours as well.

It’s not just Clary and the shadowhunters’ having trouble, Simon (Alberto Rosende) is too. With the death of Clary’s mother, Simon is rethinking his cold shoulder to his own mother. But, when he does get home, it’s not all smooth sailing.

Aftermath of Death

Dust and Shadows is probably the most emotional episode yet. Last week I said that I didn’t feel the grief, the heartbreak. But, this episode was totally different.

Clary started to feel her mother’s death this week and gosh did it tear me apart. I think there was still some shock in her system and she fully didn’t understand what was going on. How this could all happen. She is so deep in grief that she wants to bring her mother back from the dead. And no one can stop her. This was really hard to see. We don’t see this side of Clary in the book, so taken by grief – so it was strange.

The last scene in this episode – wow. Katherine’s acting hasn’t been something that I’ve loved. But, I could really feel her in Dust and Shadows and that last scene really set that in place.

We also see some emotions in Jace (Dominic Sherwood) in this episode that we haven’t seen before. I am not sure if it’s about Jocelyn death or for Clary who is broken all over.

Alec (Matthew Daddario) isn’t as much struggling with the death of Jocelyn, but more with that, he was the one who killed her. Or the demon possessed him and then killed her. Alec has been closed off for most of the series so far, but we see him break a little. There is this scene with Magnus (Harry Shum Jr) that broke my heart. He feels so bad like it’s all his fault. That he could have stopped the demon, and he didn’t. Magnus helps him see even if it’s just a little – that it wasn’t his fault.

The ‘Funeral’ scene was interesting. It’s not exactly what I imagined, however, they were all wearing white! They have finally done something that I couldn’t help but smile at. Shadowhunters wearing white for mourning is something that is powerful in the books.

Bonds

In Dust and Shadows bonds have started to appear and grow and it was so good to see some light in this episode. There is a scene where Jace and Izzy (Emeraude Toubia) and practice fighting and omg – I loved it. The banter between the two was beautiful and we the audience gets to see how much they care for each other. It’s really nice to see a female and male relationship that isn’t romantic.

The audience is also able to see a little bonding with Alec and Clary. Alec wants to do everything in his power to help Clary, so he goes with her to the warlock that has said she will bring her mother back. It’s really great to see them start to build something. Thier relationship growth was on of my favourites in the book series, so to see this – I am quite happy.

There is also a scene where Magnus calls Clary ‘Biscuit’ and omg. I may have squealed a little.

Warlocks

In this week’s episode, the audience is able to see that not all warlocks use their powers for good. It’s a message from the books and I am glad that they did bring it across. Not only is the warlock crazy, but now Clary owes her a favour and I am not looking forward to what it is.

The audience is also given an insight into the warlock world. If you are unfamiliar with the books, it’s a really interesting and explains how warlocks are created.

Simon

Simon has it hard this episode. Last week I spoke about the end is coming for Simon and his family and I think it’s closer than I thought. We have an emotional scene with Simon and his mum and it’s beautiful and really packs a punch after Jocelyn’s death. He loves her so much and he doesn’t want to lose her.

Unfoutently it doesn’t last long with Simon’s sister finds his blood stash. Everything starts to fall apart. Simon has to confess to his mum. I was angry at first because she seemed to be all okay with, yer that wasn’t the case. So heartbreaking, but so good.

Overall

This episode was a standout. I didn’t know what to expect or how to handle things. And even though I am upset and slightly angry with the death, I have to deal with it. They are drifting from the books and I expected nothing less, however, I am still enjoying it. I cannot wait to see what next week brings because it’s a Magnus and Alec date plus Iron Sisters!
