A Romance Buying Spree | June Haul

Posted by angelreads Book Hauls 2 Comments

I didn’t buy too many books this month. But a lot did arrive. I’ve currently got a whole bunch of books on order from both work and Better World Books, and they are slowly trickling in. I did get a range of books in June, but I did get quite a few romance books, mostly historical but also a mix of other things as well.

Anyway, let’s get into it. The books I got this month were from work, Better World Books, Amazon and a few review books as well. Like always these are in no particular order. Here is my June Haul.

Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson: I’ve been wanting to read something from Tiffany D. Jackson for some time now, so I finally did it and brought Monday’s Not Coming. I’m excited to dig into this one. I’ve heard such good things about it. I am intrigued to see where the story goes.

You Were Made For Me Jenna Guillaume: I read Jenna Guillaume’s debut book last year and enjoyed it. And this one sounds like it’s more up my alley. I’m excited to read this one. It’s got this bad boy vibe and that is my jam. Also, it’s #LoveOzYA so I can’t help but be excited.  This one comes out in August.

Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1) by Nalini Singh: Finally this has arrived. I ordered this way back in April and it finally arrived in June. I’m hoping to get stuck into it this week sometime. I’ve been wanting to read it for some time, and Nick from The Infinite Limit of Love has been raving about it recently and I bit the bullet and got it.

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo: I finished The Poet X earlier in June and I knew that I had to get the rest of Elizabeth Acevedo’s books. Because seriously The Poet X was amazing! And I’ve heard so many good things about this one as well. I’ve already ordered Clap When You Land so just waiting for it.

The Duke (Knight Miscellany #1) by Gaelen Foley: Don’t know too much about this one, but it sounded really interesting and like something that I will enjoy. The reviews for it are also really good, so that sounds fantastic to me.

Wicked and the Wallflower (The Bareknuckle Bastards #1) by Sarah MacLean: I’ve heard so many good things about Sarah MacLean that I had to see what it was all about. This is the first in her new series and I already think that I’m going to love it. It sounds fantastic.

A Love Hate Thing by Whitney D. Grandison: This one sounds so interesting. The plot immediately grabbed me and I want to find out more. I tried to get this from work and couldn’t so I got an ebook and I’m excited.

Finding Balance (Brave Enough #2) by Kati Gardner: I hadn’t head about this one until Ely told me about it. It sounds really interesting, and there have been mixed reviews so far and I wanted to see what it was about. It has disability rep as well as being own voices. Excited.

Beyond the Cut (Sinner’s Tribe Motorcycle Club #2) by Sarah Castille: Don’t know much about this one either, but I’m always looking for new MC romances. I know this is book two, I’ll get the first on ebook and see what it is about.

The Hazards of Hunting a Duke (Desperate Debutantes #1) by Julia London: I’ve heard some really good things about this series and I wanted to give it a try. It sounds like it’s going to be a fantastic historical romance and I can never get enough of them.

Project Duchess (Duke Dynasty #1) by Sabrina Jeffries: I received the third book in this series for review and I wanted to read the rest before I started it. And let me tell you. I’ve found one of my new favourite historical romance authors. I loved everything about this book. It’s just so fantastic.

The Bachelor (Duke Dynasty #2) by Sabrina Jeffries: So I had to read book two right away, and gosh I loved it so much. It has all the right elements of a fantastic historical romance. I loved this series so much that I’ve now gone and bought another one.

High Heat (Hotshots #2) by Annabeth Albert: I’ve read quite a few other books from Annabeth Albert, and when I saw that her new one was coming I knew I wanted to read it. Sadly I didn’t love it. But that is for another day.

The Dare (Briar U #4) by Elle Kennedy: New Elle Kennedy so, of course, I had to get it. I pretty much read it right away. It’s been about a week and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I liked parts, I didn’t like other parts. I’m just very confused at the moment.

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds: I’ve been thinking about picking up a Jason Reynolds for some time now, and I finally ordered in some of his books. This is the only one that arrived, but I am so excited to read it. I normally don’t read a lot of poetry, but I’m excited about this one.

In Bed with a Highlander (McCabe Trilogy #1) by Maya Banks: I love Maya Banks romantic suspense series. And since I’m loving historical romance so much I thought I would give hers a go. I’m excited that is for sure.

Trouble the Saints by Alaya Dawn Johnson: This one caught my eye as soon as I read the synopsis. It just sounds so fantastic. I can’t even explain. An historical fiction fantasy with assassins. ahh!! I got an earc of this one and I cannot wait to dig in. This is one of the last books I got in June.

Devil’s Bride (Cynster #1) by Stephanie Laurens: I really want to try some new historical romance authors and Ely has really enjoyed this series so far. So I jumped on it and got this one. It sounds fabulous and it’s a long one – which I love. Long romance series are seriously the best.

Okay after finishing this post. I did get a lot of books this month. But like I said most of these just arrived this most. But I got them in April/May. What did you get in June? Do we share anything that is the same? Let’s ChaT!

Romance Recs: Favourite Military and Suspense Romances

Posted by angelreads Recommendations, Romance Recs No Comments

In this next post in my Romance Recommendation series, I share some of my favourite military and suspense romance. I love reading these genres of romance. They are intense, gripping and full of romance. Don’t forget to check out other posts in this series as well.

I love the intensity of them, and as I don’t read a ton of crime and thrillers – these are a great escape. I also love how different authors look into them. It’s just really interesting. Some books are harder to read than others, some times brutal things happen. And then in others, it’s a different kind of brutality. I just like the different aspects that authors choose to focus on.

Anyway enough talk, here are some of my favourite Military and Suspense Romance novels that I have read so far.

KGI Series by Maya Banks: This is one of my favourites because of the family aspect of it all. Most of the characters in each book are related – all coming from the same family. And if they aren’t they are part of the KGI team. Some of these books aren’t easy to read. There is a lot of horrible things that happen to nearly all of the characters, but you never know what is going to happen next. The only thing is the latest book on this series keeps on getting pushed back. I’m not sure why. Hopefully, it comes out soon because I’m dying to know what happens next.

Flight & Glory Series by Rebecca Yarros: If I could include all of Rebecca Yarros military romance books I would, but I’m going to try and keep it to a few. This is one of the first military romance series that I read and let me tell you I feel it, love. I cried the first chapter of the first in this series. Also the last week in this one – oh gosh. Have a tissue box nearby. I like that all the books are so different, but they are raw and I love that so much.

Squared Away (Out of Uniform #5) by Annabeth Albert: I’ve read this whole series, but I think this one might be my favourite from then all. I love the romance, the protagonist and everything that follows. It’s heartbreaking, but also so beautiful and a really enjoyable M/M romance. You don’t need to read this series in order per se, but it does have appearances of couples from previous books.

The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros: Okay I needed to include another Rebecca Yarros – because come on. This I think is my favourite of her books. You will need a tissue box, maybe even a bucket nearby. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful and just oh gosh so good. The Last Letter is one that I am always recommending, especially to those that don’t love romance. It’s a great starting point.

Killer Instincts Series by Elle Kennedy: This is such a fun, intense and captivating series. I love all the different characters and their stories. While there is a storyline that is present throughout all the books, I love that each character gets to be in the spotlight. Again these books aren’t always easy to read. But if you are okay with things that do include darker themes, then go for it.

Hard Ink Series by Laura Kaye: This is another series that I have really enjoyed. It’s intense and full of action. But also has some really nice relationships and not just romantic ones. It explores friendships and family. As well as looking into the horrors of war and while they might not be fighting on the field anymore – they are still left with many scars.

And that is it for this recommendation post! What are some of your favourite military and suspense romance novels? Do you recommend any that I should read? Let’s Chat!

A Mix Bag of Reads | June Wrap Up

June Wrap Up

June was a pretty good reading month for me. I read a good range of books this June. From YA to romance. Some were amazing reads, and some sucked. But overall I had a decent reading month.

With the number of books that I do read I’m bound to have a big amount that I don’t love and that did show this month. I also completed my Goodreads reading challenge this month with over 150 reads. Anyway, let’s see what I read in June. Like always these are in no order.

Dear Martin Cover June Wrap Up Hell’s Handlers MC #5 -#8 by Lilly Atlas: I started this series last month and finished it in June. This was a fun series. I enjoyed reading it. And these last few were really great. It’s a decent MC series – not my favourite out there, but it was still a good read.

Dear Martin (Dear Martin #1) by Nic Stone: This is an emotional read, but it’s also powerful and beautiful. Justyce was such a fantastic protagonist. He felt real and honest and that made for such an incredible read. If you haven’t read this book, please do. It is a powerful but brutal read. Full Review.

No Prisoners MC #0.5 – #5 by Lilly Atlas: This is the companion series to Hell’s Handlers and it’s much more intense than it for sure. There are a lot more questionable things that happen throughout the series. I just didn’t love it as much as the first series. It was just okay for me.

Rebel Cover June Wrap Up A Little Bit Wicked by Melissa Foster: I really wanted to like this one, but I just could not get into it. I couldn’t really connect with the characters and the plot felt bland to me. I just wanted more from it.

Rebel (Women Who Dare #1) by Beverly Jenkins: This has to be one of my favourite books I read in June. Rebel is such a fantastic historical romance and I can’t wait to read more. The romance was fantastic and I enjoyed reading a book set in a different time than I normally read in my historical romance. Full Review.

Kings of Mayhem MC Series #1 – #5 by Penny Dee: I think this could jump to one of my favourite MC series. I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s dark, but not too dark. It’s that right mix. I love the family dynamics.

Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes: I adored Girl Against the Universe. It was an excellent novel that does focus on mental health. It’s not a love fixes all kind of novel but explores how those around can help you in a way that you never thought. Maguire and Jordy were adorable and I love them so much. Full Review.

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo: I read this as an audiobook and it’s the best thing I ever did. I can’t even begin to explain how beautiful and stunning The Poet X is. The passion and thought that went into every word, every poem was just perfect. I love how each poem intertwined, everything felt like it belonged. Full Review.

The Kings of Retribution MC, Louisiana Chapter #1 – #2 by Sandy Alvarez and Crystal Daniels: I really enjoyed the first series and this companion series has started off on the right foot for me. I’ve really enjoyed the characters and the story so far. And I’m really looking forward to seeing where this story goes.

Hero (Morgan Brothers #1) by Lauren Rowe: I had been hearing some really good things about this series and let me tell you I was disappointed. I really didn’t like this one at all. The only thing that I did enjoy was the male protagonist relationship with the love interests kids. That was great.

The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary: This was the second audiobook that I listen to this month. It took me a while to get into this one, but once I did I started to really enjoy it. You can check out Ely and I discuss all our thoughts about it.

A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley: I enjoyed reading this one. It was a good historical romance that has its faults but I still enjoyed reading it. I love that it includes diversity and sadly it isn’t something seen a lot in historical romance. While it’s not my favourite historical romance, I’m really looking forward to the series. Full Review.

The Dare (Briar U #4) by Elle Kennedy: I finished this about a week ago and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. There are parts that I really enjoyed and other parts that didn’t still well for me. My full review of this one is coming soon, maybe when I can get all my thoughts down I will know.

Duke Dynasty #1- #3 by Sabrina Jeffries: I received an earc of the third book in this series, so I decided to pick the first two up and loved them too bits. I think Sabrina Jeffries might be one of my new favourite historical romance authors. The characters, the plot, the writing are all just so good. I just brought another series of hers and I cannot wait to dig into them.

Captain (Morgan Brothers #2) by Lauren Rowe: I think I disliked this one less than the first book. I could not connect with these characters anymore. There were just silly things happening and nothing really made sense to me. It felt like I was going back and forth between things and I could not keep up.

Classified (The Elite #3) by Brooke Blaine and Ella Frank: This is the final book in this trilogy and I enjoyed it a lot. I love the characters and the story and I couldn’t wait to see where it went. I did want a little more tension, but overall it was an okay read.

High Heat (Hotshots #2) by Annabeth Albert: This one just scrapped in for the month, and it didn’t really stand up for me. I’ve enjoyed most of Annabeth Albert’s books I’ve read in the past. However, something wasn’t there for me in this book. The couple was cute, but I wanted more from nearly everything.

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
