July Wrap Up (2016)

Posted by angelreads Features, Monthly Wrap Up 1 Comment

July Wrap Up

July has been a crazy month for me. I started back at university for my last semester of my course which is sad and exciting at the same time. And this semester is going to be crazy, there is a few events that we have to organised, big assessments and graduation.

I am also part of the team creating the Visible Ink Anthology this year and we are coming to the big end. We are reading submissions, deciding covers  and putting it all together.

At the end of this month I started my Internship, which is turning out to be pretty amazing. I cannot wait to see what else that I learn.

My #LoveOzYA feature is still going and I really hope that you are enjoying it. If there is any Aussie YA authors that you would like to see in an interview – just give me a shout.

books read

I read 9 books in July – which I am quite surprised about. I didn’t even think I would be able to read that much. However, we are already a week into August and I haven’t read anything.

books read july

The Industry by Rose Foster:  I enjoyed reading The Industry and cannot wait to read more. The world was intriguing, protagonist interesting and the story pulled me right in. The Industry shows us that we need to try to be strong in hard times, even when you think everything is impossible| 3.5 Stars Full Review

Flawed by Cecelia Ahern: Flawed was an intriguing read. With a world that marks people for being flawed and follows a system that is flawed itself, a protagonist that needs to hold on, Flawed is a captivating read and I cannot wait for more | 3.5 Stars Full Review

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye: I am not to sure how I feel about this one, I enjoy the concept of the book, the plot was intriguing and I enjoyed the characters. But the romance and the whole of the book was a let down | 3.5 Stars.

Burning by Danielle Rollins:   I enjoyed Burning. Was is a bad book? No. Is it my favourite? No. Will I read the next book in this series? The Last Good Day of the Year by Jessica Warman: The concept was interesting and the mystery was quite good, but then everything else let it down for me | 2.5 Stars

Point of Origin by Rebecca Yarros: A quick read from an author that I enjoyed. Cannot wait to read more from the fire boys| 3.5 Stars

books read july 3

Disruption by Jessica Shirvington: I loved the whole concept of the world, the book, the writing. I characters were amazing and intriguing and the ending! 4 Stars

Corruption by Jessica Shirvington: I started this as soon as I finished Disruption, it was even more amazing and intriguing. 4 stars.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley: Gorgeous writing and just so beautiful. It’s a story about grief, first love, friendship and what it means to grow up. It was beautiful. 4 Stars.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne: Why am I always a mess when it comes to Harry Potter. I devoured this. Albus is too much like his father for his own good and most of the time I wanted to just throw something at him, but I understood. Scorpius was marvelous and was the best kind of friend for Albus, and I want to know more. Rose was a mix of her mother and father and it was perfect. And everyone else – my life is complete | 4 Stars

OZYA Author Interview- Jessica Shirvington

I love Aussie YA. I love reading books from authors that live in the same country as me, that know things that people out of Australia might be so confused about. I love how sometimes they can incorporate this into their book and it is fabulous.

So I decided to created a feature where I interview Australian Young Adult authors about their craft, journey and some interesting facts. I thought it was a fun way of everyone around the world to get to know these authors and maybe make them want to pick up their books. And that is what I am aiming to do, spread the word about #LoveOZYA and get everyone reading it.

You can check out my previous interviews with authors like Jay Kristoff, Gabrielle Tozer, Sarah Ayoub last weeks guest Paula Weston and more through Angel Reads.

This week on my #LoveOzYA feature I interview Jessica Shirvington, author of;  The Violet Eden Chapters (2010, Hachette), Between the Lives (2013 Harper Collins) and the Disruption Duo (2014, Harper Collins).

Hi Jessica, and welcome to Angel Reads. First can you introduce yourself to everyone? Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Jessica S Author PicHi Angel, thanks so much for inviting me to give this interview. My name is Jess and I live in Sydney with my husband, Matt and out two girls, Sienna and Winter. I write (mostly) young adult fiction. My first book, Embrace, came out in October 2010 and since then I have released eight novels (Embrace, Entice, Emblaze, Endless & Empower, Between the Lives, and Disruption & Corruption) and one picture book (Just the Way You Are).

What has your writing journey been like? Where did you start? Why?

My writing journey has been hectic! I never envisaged myself as an author or writer of any kind. I always thought I would have a corporate career but that all changed when we were living in London and I had my first daughter. Having kids changed everything and we decided to move back to Sydney, where our second daughter was born. It was only then that I was reading in all of my downtime.

It was the first time since I had finished school that I’d had any downtime! I hit a small run of books that I was struggling to connect with. It’s strange and I don’t know why exactly, but one morning, instead of opening a new book, I opened my laptop and I wrote two names – Violet and Lincoln. Those names became the two lead characters in a five book series. A year after I started writing my first story, Embrace was on the shelves. Sometimes life gives you a nudge in the right direction and sometimes it catapults you onto a new path – for me it was definitely the latter.

Jessica S Books

What was the process of getting your first book published?

My first book was all about confidence. I knew I had written something that worked. The story was solid and I loved the characters but I had never done this before and there was a very solid chance I was kidding myself. So, the process really began with accepting criticism. I asked my husband, my family and friends to read the manuscript – God love em! Looking back at that initial draft, they were all very kind. But they did give gentle feedback, and it did help. I rewrote my first manuscript about eight times before I even considered what I would do next. After that, I researched the agent I thought would be the best fit for me and I made contact. I was lucky enough to receive an opportunity to send my first three chapters. I sent them off, never expecting to hear from her again.

About a week later, I received a note in the mail telling me she was going away on holiday and not to expect her to read my chapters until her return. I’ll never forget because it was my birthday and my husband took me up the road for a birthday breakfast and then took the kids and sent me off to do a spot of shopping. Anyway, my phone rang and it was this agent. She told me she had had a few free minutes so had read my chapters. She liked them and told me to have the entire manuscript with her by 9 am the next morning and she would take it with her on holiday. Two weeks later I had an agent. Three weeks after that I had my first three book deal. It was an absolute whirlwind. One of the most exciting times in my life!

Was it different when getting your proceeding books published?

Yes! It’s a different kind of confidence needed when writing your second, third and subsequent books. It is also different when writing books within one series and then starting a new one. The self-doubt never ends, because let’s face it – we’re basically relying on our ability to come up with really weird unique ideas and then make them connect in a believable sense with readers whilst keeping said readers thoroughly entertained! Self-doubt is a guarantee!

In some ways, the process is easier because you know all of the rules and the steps of publishing. But at the same time, it’s important to me to approach each story in a completely new way. I don’t want to write the same stories over and over, so I’m always challenging myself to come up with something that is out of my comfort zone and that always brings a new set of hurdles.

Fun Fact About Jessica

What was the difference between getting your books published here in Australia and internationally?

The process is different in every country. Obviously if I’m being published in a non-English speaking country, they don’t ask me for much help! More often than not, the book is translated in-house and I only see the cover art when the book is available for sale, or on a blog like yours!

In the US it is a more involved process. They like to put the manuscript through their own edit and design new covers, and they usually embark on a marketing campaign that requires a fair bit of input. It’s great! I love all parts of the publishing process and I find it fascinating how different countries have different expectations and approach their readers in unique ways. I’m constantly learning to both be thoughtful, active and understanding – it takes a combination!

You are an OZYA author, what are some of your favourite Aussie YA books?

After three years in juvie, Angela Davis is now months away from release. She’ll finally get the hell out of Brunesfield Correctional Facility.

And then Jessica arrives… she’s young – only ten years old – so why did she arrive in shackles under the highest security? And why is she being kept in segregation? No one knows what she did to end up there. But there are plenty of rumours.

Pretty soon strange things start happening to Angela and her friends. Could they be down to Jessica?

This little girl might just be more dangerous than anyone expected…

Burning:

I received a review copy of Burning by Danielle Rollins for review from Bloomsbury Australia in exchange for an honest review, this has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.

As soon as I read the synopsis for Burning, I knew that I needed to read it. It sounded like something that was going to take me on an adventure and leave me hanging, page after page and it did do that – just not in the way that I expected it.

Burning follows protagonist Angela Davis a few months before her release from her 3 year juvie sentence. She will finally be free from Brunesfield Correctional Facility and able to be with her young brother again – but then ten year old Jessica arrives and everything seems to turn on its head. Strange things start to happen when Jessica is around, new people arrive and it’s no longer safe…for anyone.

Overall, Angela was an easy protagonist to get along with. There were times where she annoyed me, but that was mainly with her not telling us why she was in Juvie for so long and when the truth came out…it was anticlimactic. I loved Angela’s drive to be there for her brother, which is what kept her going all those years.

I like the friendships that Angela builds over the three years and she is not some loner who keeps to herself. I liked that no one was even that close, but they were still there for each other.

One thing I didn’t like about Angela was how quickly she believed in things. She was told things and bam it was true, I also wasn’t a massive fan of how fast she was manipulated – however, because of the setting – I think it worked.

I loved the setting of Burning. It’s very rare that you see a book set in juvie in young adult and I cannot think of any off the top of my head. So in that aspect it was unique. I was intrigued with how the system works, how they were treated and just how long some of the characters had been there.

Burning Quote

I quite liked the romance in Burning. It was sweet and didn’t overtake the story. There were just little hints of it here and there. I wasn’t 100% convinced by how it all worked, however, I liked the slow burn of the romance. Plus the guy was very adorable.

Although I liked a few things in Burning, the pace of the book brought it down. Burning was really slow, and at times I was quite bored. I wanted to skip pages and get to the interesting parts that make my heart skip a beat.

Another thing about Burning that was confusing was the genre, I felt Danielle Rollins was trying to throw so much stuff in that it confused the story. It was a thriller, crime, horror (of sorts), supernatural and I could go on. I hadn’t read a Danielle Rollins book before Burning so I don’t know if she does that with her other books.

The ending of Burning – it was intense. You had no idea what to believe, what was going to happen next. The last 100 pages or so, I kept reading and reading. Turning page after page. I need the second book as soon as I can get it.

Overall, I enjoyed Burning. Was is a bad book? No. Is it my favourite? No. Will I read the next book in this series? Yes. Burning reminds us that not everyone is who they seem on the outside, or even who you think them to be, sometimes you need to trust your instincts and run.

Just a think before I finish – I really don’t like the Australian cover, the US cover just works so well with the book.Rating

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
