Discussion: Don’t Rate A Book Before You Read It Please

Posted by angelreads Discussions 15 Comments

Discussion
I normally try to stay away from drama because I tend to make things worse when I express my opinion especially if I am passionate about it, however, I have been seeing this happen for quite a while and I don’t understand it.

How is someone possibly able to rate a book without reading it first. Unless you can see into the future and are able to see how the book is, you have no right rating a book before you have even read it.

You can express your opinion if you think you are going to like it or not based on the synopsis – I have no problem with that. What I have a problem with is someone rating a book a 1 star because they don’t like the sound of the book.

You don’t have to like every book that there is known to man, but please, please don’t rate a book a 1 star because you don’t like what it is about. You haven’t even read the book at this point, you really don’t know what it is about, however you give it a 1 star and complain because you think it’s something you won’t enjoy.

I am highlighting this because recently the synopsis for Holding up the Universe by Jennifer Niven was released and people became animals. I have never seen a reaction like this before and it made me feel sick.

Here is the synopsis for those who haven’t read it.

From the author of the New York Times bestseller All the Bright Places comes a heart-wrenching story about what it means to see someone—and love someone—for who they truly are.

Everyone knows Libby Strout. She’s the girl who was so heavy she had to be lifted out of her house by a crane. After being homeschooled for years, she’s ready to rejoin the human race, aka the junior class of MVB High. She’s free, she’s strong, and she’s going to get through this—or so she lies to herself. (Okay, fine, she’s terrified out of her skull.)

Everyone knows Jack Masselin, too. He may not be the most popular guy in school, but he’s got swagger. What no one knows is that Jack has a secret: his brain is different, or maybe a little broken, and he can’t recognize faces. Even his own brothers are strangers to him. But he’s made it this far, and he just has to keep it up: Be charming. Be hilarious. Don’t get too close to anyone.

Until he meets Libby. When the two get tangled up in a cruel high school game—which lands them in group counseling and community service—Libby and Jack are both pissed . . . and then surprised. Because the more time they spend together, the less alone they feel. Because sometimes when you meet someone, it changes the world, theirs and yours.

Jennifer Niven delivers another exhilarating, heart-wrenching love story about finding that person who sees you for who you are—and seeing them right back.

I look at this and try to think to myself, what is wrong with the synopsis? Why are people getting so upset? And you know what? I cannot think of anything.

I am not a skinny person and I have no problem with this at all. I actually want to read it, because it sounds interesting.

Some of the things that I am reading are vile not only are they attacking the book, but also the author. Quite a lot of people are saying that a ‘skinny’ author should not be writing a book about a ‘fat’ person. Well if you are saying that should an author not write a book about a vampire or angel because they are not one? NO! Because this is a thing called fiction.

Some people are saying that it is dehumanizing fat people, how exactly. Do you know that some people actually need a crane to get them out of the house or that you know fat people do fall in love?

Also, the fact that the male protagonist has Prosopagnosia, which people seem to think is a mental disorder, however it actually a cognitive disorder. So yes. People are upset that the synopsis used the words ‘broken’ for his brain, well it isn’t a normal brain for one,  there is something different about it, also maybe the character himself feels broken.

From the synopsis that I have read, it’s not romanticising a mental illness or being fat at all.

As I am writing this now and looking at goodreads, all I want to do is throw my laptop across the room. How can people be so insensitive towards the author? Why are people being so vile and ignorant? Why bring down an author’s book before you have even read it?

What I am also quite frustrated with, is author’s reactions, instead of sticking with a fellow author they have turned their back and left her for the dogs and some joining them, which is upsetting.

Nevertheless, I hope people stop rating books before they have read it, because disgusting things like this happened and it not only brings down the book, but the author as well which is never what you want before a book is published.

NOTE: Not wanting to read a book and noting its flaws regarding racism, homophobia, ableism etc is okay. That is totally fine. Actually, it’s more than okay. We need to know about this. However, when a book hasn’t even been read by one person or even a few people – then how could it be review and talked about? What I am highlighting here, is that rating a book just from a synopsis isn’t right. Let

There are some debts you can’t repay.

Josh Walker is loyal, reckless, and every girl’s dream. But he only has eyes for December Howard, the girl he’s craved since his high school hockey days. Together they have survived grief, the military, distance, and time as they’ve fought for stolen weekends between his post at Ft. Rucker and her college at Vanderbilt. Now that Josh is a medevac pilot and Ember is headed toward graduation, they’re moving on—and in—together.

Ember never wanted the Army life, but loving Josh means accepting whatever the army dictates—even when that means saying goodbye as Josh heads to Afghanistan, a country that nearly killed him once before and that took her father. But filling their last days together with love, passion, and plans for their future doesn’t temper Ember’s fear, and if there’s one thing she’s learned from her father’s death, it’s that there are some obstacles even love can’t conquer.

Flight school is over.
This is war.

Hallowed Ground:

I wasn’t prepared for Hallowed Ground by Rebecca Yarros, not at all. If you are going to start reading it, them please do yourself a favour and have a box of tissues nearby. This will contain spoilers from all the previous books.

Hallowed Ground is book 4 in The Fight and Glory series and a sequel to book 1 – Full Measures. It’s set 2 years after the events of the first book and follows  protagonists, December (Ember) and Josh as they set into life of living together, except now he is expected to go back to where he was nearly killed before and the place that took her father’s life – Afghanistan.

I love and hate this book. I loved it because the series finished with something really beautiful and we got to see the characters that we have come to previously love. However this book torn me to shreds.

I loved seeing Ember and Josh again, it had been quite a while since we had seen them, sure they came up in parts of the other books, but we didn’t see them, and it was nice to see.

I loved Ember as a character, her character arc is quite amazing from the first book. She has grown so much from the first time we have seen her. Throughout Hallowed Ground all I wanted to do is hug her. Ember broke me. She had been through so much before and in this book, she is ripped apart.

“I don’t care how you come home. I don’t care what parts of you are broken, or bleeding, or… anything, just as long as you come home. As long as your heart is beating, I will want you, do you understand me? I don’t care what happens there as long as you come home.”

Josh, my love for Josh is unexplainable, but gosh did I want to slap him around a bit. I understand most of the things he did and that I am not even fussed about, however the things that happened with Ember towards the end of the book. It’s like Josh she loves you, why are you doing this to her and yourself.

They have survived through so much and I wasn’t sure they were going to survive this novel, especially with Josh being back in Afghanistan.

It was really great to see the military aspect of Hallowed Ground.  We saw it a little in the last novel, however it wasn’t that prominent, with this novel being half in Josh point of view it made sense. I love military planes, there is something about there. Here is Victoria, where I live we have a thing called the Airshow every 2 years, where military planes and others come and put of a show. I love the feeling of hornets flying by. So I truly enjoyed seeing the military aspect.

One thing that annoyed me with Hallowed Ground was the consent separation between Ember and Josh, not the physical separation, but the emotional and it killed me. I just wanted everything to be okay, and it wasn’t, not in the slightest.

Hallowed Ground is emotionally draining. I cried for most of this book, bad things kept happening, all I wanted was for it to be over. Not because it was horrifying, because it hurt my heart.

“I cannot imagine a future where you’re not mine, because I’m yours in every sense of the word.”

Nevertheless, Hallowed Ground is probably my favourite of all 4 books. It had so much and more. There is a chance that I won’t read the middle two books again, for something in this book will make it impossible.

Although, many sad and emotionally heartbreaking things happened in Hallowed Ground there was so many beautiful moments that were heart lifting. The epilogue was just beautiful and I smiled the whole time reading it.

Overall, Hallowed Ground was a beautiful read that intertwined, family both by blood and friendship. Loss that can bring people closer together or tear some apart. About doing what is right for you and the ones that you love and forgiveness and what it truly means to forgive not only others but yourself.

Rating

Have you read Hallowed Ground yet? Did you cry as much as me? Are you are to read Hallowed Ground?

With the knowledge that Valentine is alive and on the hunt for The Mortal Cup, the Institute is on high alert. Not wasting any time, Jace jumps into action and figures Clary’s memories are the key to finding Jocelyn and The Mortal Cup. Unfortunately, Clary’s memories were wiped leaving her without any recollection of this other life that could help her and the team. With only one other option remaining, Jace, Isabelle and a very reluctant Alec take Clary to the City of Bones to face the powerful Silent Brothers. Meanwhile, Luke continues his search for Clary, and Simon tries to come to terms with his best friend’s new life.

The Descent Into Hell Is Easy:

I feel that episode 2 of Shadowhunters was better than last week’s episode, however, I still think that they have a long way to go.

The episode (The Descent into Hell is Easy, directed by Mick Garris) starts off where the first episode left off, pretty much to the second. I really enjoyed that, since the first episode left off with a tense scene between protagonist Clary (Katherine McNamara), Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and Simon (Alberto Rosende).

I like when series’ start off where it left off in the previous episode. It doesn’t have to be for every episode, but with how the previous episode ended I thought it was perfect.

Shadowhunters now has opening credits. I like they aren’t too long. I dislike how long the GOT opening credits are. I like a quick short clip and then it’s back to business, however, I don’t like get the song was being used.  Nevertheless, that is just me being picky.

After the second episode, I stand by my decision that the casting was perfect. I loved every character and how the portrayal by the actors/actress’s was pretty spot on.

However, I do wish that the dialogue was better. It was pretty cheesy for most of the episode, especially Jace’s lines. I love Dom and his playing Jace well, however his lines are letting him down. Clary’s lines are also quite cheesy, nevertheless Katherine brings a spark to Clary that oversees it a little.

I like what they are doing with the characters in Shadowhunters. The banter between Simon and Jace is spot on. The teasing between the two, then fighting for Clary’s attention, Simon saying things that Jace has no clue about. I loved seeing something from the book that I loved in the TV Series.

I also love the banter between Alec (Matthew Daddario) and Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia). They have the perfect brother/sister relationship. Not only do they look like brother and sister, they act it. The way that they tease each other and having little snips at each other – is what I see them like in the book, so that was nice to see.

I also loved seeing the start of Alec being jealous. It was funny at times, especially when Isabelle was in the picture, however it was great to see.  I cannot wait to see where this goes.

One thing that had me frustrated in this episode was something to do with Magnus and warlocks in general. They wouldn’t have done what happened in this episode, especially Magnus. It’s not in his nature to do what happened. He might not help shadowhunters, but he wouldn’t do what he did in the show.

I loved seeing more of Luke (Isaiah Mustafa). In the books we don’t see much of him or how much he really does care for Jocelyn (Maxim Roy) and Clary so it was great to see the lengths he would go through to find them both.

The ending of episode 2 shows that there is so much more to come and I am getting excited. Episode 3 is going to be an exciting episode that I cannot wait to see.

As much as I am enjoying Shadowhunters, I and everyone else can say that they are working on a small budget. I wish that the CGI was better, however, I hope that I can get used to it.

Overall, episode 2 of Shadowhunters was better than episode 1 and I hope that goes for more episodes to come. I loved the casting, the dialogue lets me down, and I loved the banter between characters and cannot wait to see what episode 3 brings.

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
