Book Review: Teen Spirit by Francesca Lia Block

Posted by angelreads Book Reviews 5 Comments

Teen Spirit

First Published: February 4th 2014
Pages: 240 (Hardcover)
Publisher: HarperTeen, (Harper Collins)
ISBN: 0062008099
Book Depository – Amazon UK – Amazon US – Amazon AU

Synopsis

After Julie’s grandmother passes away, she is forced to move across town to the not-so-fancy end of Beverly Hills and start over at a new school. The only silver lining to the perpetual dark cloud that seems to be following her? Clark—a die-hard fan of Buffy and all things Joss Whedon, who is just as awkward and damaged as she is. Her kindred spirit.

When the two try to contact Julie’s grandmother with a Ouija board, they make contact with a different spirit altogether. The real kind. And this ghost will do whatever it takes to come back to the world of the living.

Review

I received an copy of Teen Spirit from Harper Collins Australia for a copy. This is no way influenced my review at all.

I didn’t know what exactly to expect when I started reading Teen Spirit. I really enjoyed it. It was an original, interesting read.
I love how the book is separated into different parts. It just adds to the originality of the book. The cover is also just so gorgeous.

I think the writing style would suite teens from about 13 years old, but there are some scenes that are for a teens a little older. I really enjoy that Francesca Lia Block used a lot of pop culture references; Buffy ( which made me squeal) Joss Weldon, Lenny Kravitz, Angelina Jolie, etc. It’s a quick, easy read and I think for someone that does not read that much, this is a perfect read.

The first 2 chapters were, I think, very powerful. They set up the whole novel._We met our main protagonist Juile in the first chapter and we get to know her. I really enjoyed Juile as a character. She is likable and very interesting. She is your typical teen girl with a little differences here and there. I love that we get to see Juile grow throughout the novel. I would have liked a little more characterisation, but overall she was a well set out character. I also like that we get a prologue as it really sets up the relationship with Juile and her grandmother.

I have mixed feelings about Juile’s mother. At the most she annoyed the hell out of me. I really disliked her. You could even say that I hated her at the most. Her mother just knows how to tick all those boxes that get on my nerves. I guess I can add her to the list of YA mothers that I don’t seem to like.

Clark, Clark, Clark. He is just so cute. He is such a dork and I love him to bits, but again I wish I got more about him. These wasn’t too much on his appearance, but his attitude spoke for it’s self(itself). Granted, I adored him at first and then …

There were just so many things that I didn’t expect to happen at all and when they did, I was really shocked. It was awesome.

The supernatural elements were not scary as such, but defiantly creepy and freaky. There were times where I had to close the book and then open it and re-read because I had to take it all in. There wre just so many unexpected things, but as the book went on everything started to fall into place and BAM the ending. WOW.

There were some parts that really got to me and though I didn’t cry, I did feel upset. Especially when Juile talked about her grandmother. It was heartbreaking at times.

Teen Spirit lacked a little characterisation but the plot of the story was really intriguing and from about halfway. I could not put it down. I really enjoyed Teen Spirit overall.

I give Teen Spirit by Francesca Lia Block 3.5 Stars

I just love sharing all the new books or bookish related items such as swag etc that I get throughout the year. So at the start of each month I will post what I bought throughout the previous month or received from either publishers, Netgalley, from people or won in giveaways etc.  For example at the start of September, I  make a post about what books or bookish Swag  I bought or received throughout the mouth of  August. I would also like to hear what books you also bought throughout the month as well, maybe we bought something the same.

I actually didn’t buy any books this month. I think that is mostly because I went back to school this month. I only ended up with 3 books this month.

Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Vict Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Victoria Wilder’s Bourbon Boys series, and as soon as I heard she was writing a new series, around whiskey and women. Well, hell year. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but after a few chapters, I was hooked.

Wyn is hiding, hiding from everyone, even when she is there. She is hiding behind so much, and damn, I don’t blame her. We don’t know everything from the start, but we start piecing things together, and my heart broke. And I was terrified for her. But she is a Crowne woman, and that means something.

We’ve met Julian before, and while he intrigued me before, I am invested now. He is charming, secretive in the best way and will do anything at this point for Wyn. But he is also lost, and somehow he finds his way to Rumour and back into Wyn’s life.

The romance is hot and steamy and everything that you want. The tension and chemistry in this one is high. Neither Wyn nor Julian wants to really give in or give up on one another, but a lot is standing in their way, honestly, mainly themselves. I just sat there giggling half the time because they are swoon-worthy.

I would say this is the darkest Victoria Wilder book I’ve read, so double-check those trigger warnings before jumping in because there is a lot that happens. And I don’t think it’s going to die down any time soon because these Crowne women are badass, and I know things are only just getting started.

Overall, Rumors & Whiskey is hot and sexual. The tension is dripping off the page, and then you are thrown into the terror and horrors of Rumour. You don’t know what is going to happen next, you don’t know who to trust, and there are so many more secrets that have yet to be revealed. I know I am ready for more. Are you?

Thank you to @atriabooksaus for an earc of Rumors & Whiskey 🥃. I’m in love.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!
