Ben and Grace Walker are twins. Growing up in a sleepy coastal town it was inevitable they’d surf. Always close, they hung out more than most brothers and sisters, surfing together for hours as the sun melted into the sea. At seventeen, Ben is a rising surf star, the golden son and the boy all the girls fall in love with. Beside him, Grace feels like she is a mere reflection of his light. In their last year of school, the world beckons, full of possibility. For Grace, finishing exams and kissing Harley Matthews is just the beginning.

Then, one day, the unthinkable. The sun sets at noon and suddenly everything that was safe and predictable is lost. And everything unravels

Breathing Under Water:

I received an e-arc of Breathing Under Water by Sophie Hardcastle from Hatchette via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, this has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about this book.

It’s been a couple of weeks since I read Breathing Under Water and I am still now sure how I feel about it. There were parts that I liked and intrigued by, but then there were parts that just got on my nerves. It’s that weird feeling that you get, what you have no idea what you are thinking.  The likes don’t override the dislikes, and the dislikes don’t override the likes, I am in the middle.

Breathing Under Water follows protagonist Grace, twin to Ben Walker. They are closer than most brothers and sisters, they would hang out with their friends, they would go surfing together and just being there for each other. But Grace is always a shadow to Ben, but then the unthinkable happens, Grace’s life falls apart.

I don’t know how I feel about Grace, I felt that she just moved along with the rest of the characters and until the unthinkable happens, we don’t really know her as a person and then again, the person that we do get to know is full of grief and doing things that she would never do.

Breathing Under Water Quote

However, I loved seeing Grace grow throughout the novel. We get to see her find out who she is without Ben, it’s a hard road and some people may find it hard to read, but I thought it was done exquisitely.

It’s hard to comment on Grace’s family simply because of the situation that they were put through. They go through a hell of a lot, but grief changes people and sometimes not for the better. In the moment that they should all be there for each other they drift away.

The friendships in Breathing Under Water are hard to explain as well and again it’s because of grief. Everyone deals with it in different ways and sometimes that divides friendships. In saying that, I liked how it all panned out.

A problem that I had with Breathing Under Water was that I didn’t know what age Grace was without reading the synopsis. I felt the writing a little too young to be seventeen and that kind of hinder thoughts I had about the book.

I also felt the writing was a little too flowery at times, and I just wanted to be told in a simpler way. Then at other times it was beautiful and left me heartbroken. The writing and storyline are powerful and I was left in tears quite a couple of times.

Overall, I enjoyed Breathing Under Water.  I was on a ride with Grace, I was pulled along with the grief of the family, of everyone in the book. I liked how everyone reacted differently and how it showed, just how hard it is when someone close does die, way before their time.

Breathing Under Water is an emotional rollercoster of a story. You are on a ride of grief and how it affects people differently, family and how at times you have to stick together, and friendship and how it can break when everything falls apart.

One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who’s forever owned his heart.

Justin Carter has a secret. He’s not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy…and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she’d ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she’s done everything she can to get over Justin, and salvation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she’ll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate’s given him a shot at redemption, he’s determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton…well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

The Natural History of Us:

I received an e-arc of The Natural History of Us by Rachel Harris from Spencer Hill Press via Inkslinger PR in conjunction with The Natural History of Us Blog Tour. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.

This is the first YA book from Rachel Harris that I have read, which is totally wired because I love her stuff. I have only read her NA books before this one. So when I received this for review, I was very excited and I loved it.

The Natural History of Us was a fun, emotional read that is sweet and adorable. You want to find out what happened? What is going to happen? And how everything is going to be fixed?

The Natural History of Us follows protagonist Justin and Peyton. Two people that were torn apart and with a school assignment are brought back together. They have their ups and their downs it’s not just about their relationship, but so much more.

The Natural History of Us is told in two coinciding parts. The first is before the incident. We don’t know what the incident is, we just know one part and as the novel goes it slowly unfolds. Then we have the ‘now,’ the pairing of Justin and Peyton for the assignment and how everything goes from there.

The Natural History of Us Quote

It was certainly a smart way of doing this. Instead of telling how Justin and Peyton used to be, it’s shown. At first it was a little confusing just to get used to the two time placements, but I quickly got used to it.

I loved the characterisation and character arcs of both Peyton and Justin through The Natural History of Us. The characters grow throughout the novel and we can see it.

Peyton, was a likable character and protagonist. She wasn’t annoying, though at some points I wanted to give her a knock on the back of her head, as a ‘come on,’ however we all have those moments.

I loved Justin, I just want to be his best friend and he needs one. I am not saying that his friends are horrible, because they are not. But he needs someone to be there for me, for him to tell everything. He had that in Peyton, until everything went south.

I liked that setting of The Natural History of Us. I don’t know what it’s like to live on a farm, but the way that it’s presented in the book, let me use my imagination and it was fun.

Nevertheless, there were also some amazing things that happened in The Natural History of Us. That made you want to cry. They weren’t the amazing that is the best thing in the world, but the amazing, that I am glad that Rachel Harris used them in her book.

I love Rachel Harris’ writing style, it’s easy to read and you know that when you start her books, you are going to finish them pretty quickly because you want to know what is going to happen next.

Overall, The Natural History of Us tells us a story of how two people that have been torn apart can be brought back together. With writing that is captivating, a story line that is intriguing and characters that you want to be friends with, The Natural History of Us is a book for every contemporary fan or not.

Katherine and Matthew are destined to be born again and again, century after century. Each time, their presence changes history for the better, and each time, they fall hopelessly in love, only to be tragically separated.

Spanning the Crimean War, the Siege of Carlisle and the near-future of 2019 and 2039 they find themselves sacrificing their lives to save the world. But why do they keep coming back? What else must they achieve before they can be left to live and love in peace?

Maybe the next together will be different…

The Next Together:

I don’t know what I was expecting when I started reading The Next Together by Lauren James. I had been hearing brilliant things about, and that cover is sensational. I read the synopsis and I knew that it wasn’t my typical read, but I ended up really enjoying it.

The Next Together follows protagonist Matthew and Katherine through their many lives. Yes, you did read wrong, I said many live. They are reincarnated in a way, brought together and then tragedy strikes.

The premise of The Next Together was totally intriguing. A couple being brought together again and again and then being torn apart. The Next Together has everything; history, science, romance and mystery – there is something for everyone.

The Next Together is predominately sent in 4 different times. There is some of their other lives brought up throughout the story. It was different for me, jumping through all these different times. These characters are essentially the same, but they live in different times so therefor have different characteristics and values.

However, after a while you get used to all the characters and their voices and it all fits.

Firstly, we have the main characters. They are set in the ‘now.’ Well, in 2039 their names are Kate and Matt and they both attended the University of Nottingham in England. They just meet when the novel starts and they lab partners.

The Next Together Quote

Then we have 2019, Matthew and Katherine. These two were simply adorable. I don’t know what more I can say about them. Their story is told through notes, letters, emails etc that they have left for each other. The banter  between these two is off the scales and there is not dialogue.  We find out more about 2019, Matthew and Katherine through their 2039 versions.

1745, Carlisle, England. Katherine is from the upper class and has come to live with her aunt and uncle, Matthew is a coachman. There is quite a lot of teasing between these two. And as you can imagine heartbreaking. Katherine from a higher class and Matthew a Scottish man, in the lower class – oh and they are in the middle of an uprising.

Nevertheless, there is Katy and Matthew in 1854. These two travel the world and for half of it Katy is dressed as male and goes by Kit. This is the slow burning type of romance and oh did it break my heart.

I loved that The Next Together wasn’t just a novel, but included notes, newspaper articles, blog posts. It made it really interesting and gave the book this feel that worked well.

I was turning page after page, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next, how were things going to pan out.

I do wish there was a little more characterisations, especially in 2039’s Katherine and Matthew. I felt they needed more of a character arc.

The ending, let just say I have mixed feelings about the ending. At one point it was quite messing and it all quite fast, that I didn’t know what was going on. All their stories were ending and I felt that we didn’t resolve anything. But, then again, it somehow worked in a way, and it has been left open ended for more.

Overall, I enjoyed The Next Together. It was intriguing, and different. I loved the characters, but I do wish some did have more to them. Also the ending fell a little flat for me, but I can see how it works. However, The Next Together by Lauren James is a beautifully written time travel, historical fiction, contemporary novel that looks at how love can travel through centuries, be beautiful and amazing, but it can also be tragic.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.

And I’m going to be honest here it’s because I’ve been constantly reading Heated Rivalry fanfics. 🤷‍♀️ I’m having the best time though.

How was your reading in February? Any 5 star reads?
