lady midnightLady Midnight by Cassandra Clare (The Dark Artifices #1)

Pages: 720
Publish date: 8 March 2016
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
ISBN: 1442468351
Purchase: Book Depository – Amazon UK – Amazon US – Amazon AU

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Lady Midnight:

This review of Lady Midnight will contain spoilers from Cassandra Clare’s pervious series The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments.

I love Cassandra Clare’s books, I do and after I have been waiting for Lady Midnight for over a year, I was pretty excited and had quite high expectations, let me tell you that they have been met.

Lady Midnight was amazing. It is probably Clare’s best work to date and that is saying something.

There was something about Lady Midnight that was different from her other books, I think it had to do something about the writing. It seemed different, I relished it.

Lady Midnight Quote 2

Lady Midnight follows Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn five years after City of Heavenly Fire. They have both grown a great deal since we last saw them. Emma is now a young woman who wants to know who murdered her parents and Julian, who is not a father rather than a brother to his siblings and who is always there for Emma. However, they are about to go on one heck of a ride that is going to bring them closer than they have ever thought.

I adored being in Los Angeles. It was different from New York and London, but there was a beach involved and I loved being near it, the atmosphere was kind of laid back.

We know most of the characters before Lady Midnight, they have changed in 5 years. Julian is looking after his siblings like he is the father. I felt for Julian so much. He not only had to grow up fast, but had the deal with the burden of killing his father and then taking his spot in the family.

The Blackthorn kids just put a smile on my face; they love each other so much and would anything for each other. I treasured seeing a close family bond that only grew stronger as the book went on.

Lady Midnight Quote 3

Emma and Julian – they are going to kill me more than they already have. Their friendship just warms by heart. They are always there for each other, nevertheless they are tested throughout the book.  They will do anything for each other – literally.

Lady Midnight also introduces us to some new characters firstly Cristina Rosales, man I enjoyed her. She is like Simon to Clary, Jace to Alec. They haven’t known each other long, however, they are like best friends and it was nice to see a female friendship that works.

Then we have Kieran; now I am not sure how I feel about him. Stuff goes down towards the end of the novel that changed my opinion of him, but I am hoping that in the new novel or the one following something does change.

I love that we get to see characters from both The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments since I love them too much to let them go. It was enjoyable seeing something familiar.

Mark, Mark, Mark. I loved Mark. He broke my heart it was. It has gone through so much and being back with the ones that love him.

Lady Midnight Quote 1

The one thing that I love about Clare’s writing is that she can create so many different points of view, but then they all sound so different. It’s done wonderfully in Lady Midnight and I cannot wait to read more about these characters.

Furthermore, what I also love about Lady Midnight is that we find out things that we didn’t know before about the world – it gives us an insight on laws, people, and events that are new to us.

That ending though – I don’t know how I am going to hold off to book 2, because seriously, it was so good and I need to know what is going to happen next. Nonetheless, my heart has been ripped out of my chest.

Cassandra Clare brings the magic of the shadow world into a new light, in a gripping first novel of a series, Lady Midnight is dark, fun and full of ups and down, it is going to rip your heart apart.

Book Review: City of Glass Cassandra Clare

Aug 5, 2013

Synopsis:
To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters – never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City – whatever the cost?

My Review

So what can I say, Cassandra what do you too me? I read City of Glass as soon as i finished City of Ashes and I was not disappointed at all. It was fasted pasted, action packed, dramatic and romanced filled, which to me makes a really good novel.
I loved that we got more information about characters and the characterisation of Clary and

Jace and all the other Characters. I loved the Character development of the ‘minor’ characters of Simon, Isabelle, Alec, Mangus, Luke and so on.  The plot of City of Glass made me never want to put the book down, it just pulled me more into it. Some lose ends that came forth in the earlier books were explained and put together. I love that Clary is not this weak little main female, but a strong female. She does what she thinks is right for the ones she loves. Jace again, does Cassandra Clare want to kill me with him. We finally, see his other side, his ‘weak’ side, and I loved it.  I have said this time and time again Valentine is the best Villain. Throughout the whole book, I felt bad and grossed out that I wanted Jace and Clary together the whole time.  I like that we got to know more about the Shadow hunter world and got to here and ‘see’ it more.  I really like the face that Clary could make here own runes, it made the more that more interesting and made the book a whole lot more interesting. I also loved the new characters that we get introduced to.

The last few chapters ….. I don’t even know what to say, just so much intensity from tragedy to me jumping up and down *cough* *cough* (Jace and Clary) it was amazingly written. I could never tell what was going to happened and I loved feeling like that. The ending was beautiful and it made me smile.

I had no other choice but to give this book 5 out of 5 stars

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
