Author Interview: D. Rose | Romance Thursdays

Author Interview: D. Rose | Romance Thursdays

January 14, 2021 Posted by angelreads Romance Thursdays No Comments

This week on Romance Thursdays I’m happy to say I’m interviewing D. Rose. If you haven’t checked out the rest of my interviews in this series be sure to and see what other romance authors have to say.

Romance Thursdays is a feature that spotlights romance authors to highlight how amazing the romance writing community is. Each week I’m will be interviewing a different romance author from across subgenres as well as both traditionally and self-published. I want to share their experience writing romance and why they love it so much. While also focusing on their writing and books.

D. Rose is the author of  Brown Sugar, Love On Repeat, The Second Chance series and more. You can check out their backlist now. Now let’s get into this interview.

Hi D. Rose, and welcome to Angel Reads. For those that haven’t read anything by you yet. Tell us a little about yourself and your books?

My name is D. Rose. I am a 27-year-old living in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) area. I write contemporary romance novels, which typically follow millennials as they navigate adulthood and relationships.

Why did you start writing romance novels? Is there anything in particular that drew you to it over other genres?

I started writing romance novels after becoming fully immersed in the indie romance world. Someone gifted me a kindle as a college graduation gift, and I desperately needed to read something that wasn’t non-fiction or self-help. Romance novels were the perfect escape from everyday life. The guarantee of a HEA drew me in. Also, seeing Black women writing stories I could relate to was impactful, and played a major role in becoming an author.

What is your favourite thing about romance as a genre? Why do you like reading and writing it?

My favorite thing about romance is watching characters fall in love, grow in love, and how they change over a said period of time. I read and write romance because I enjoy watching the story unfold from the meet to the dark moment and everything in between (extra points if there is a plot aside from the budding romance).

You mainly write contemporary romances with African American heroes and heroines. What is your favourite thing about writing these stories? Why do you write contemporary romances over other sub-genres?

I enjoy writing stories and characters that readers and I can relate to. When reading contemporary romances, I find joy in seeing our colloquialisms, musical references, and current trends in my reading. I prefer to write and read about things that are current. Although, I do dabble in other subgenres such as erotic romance and romantic suspense. I have written a few erotic romance novellas, and I hope to venture into suspense one day.

What are some of your favourite tropes that you like reading and writing in the romance genre?

My favorite tropes are friends to lovers, close proximity, and second chances.

Who are some of your favourite romance authors? Who inspired you to write?

Some of my favorite romance authors include Nicole Falls, Jacinta Howard, Christina C. Jones,  Alexandra Warren, and Bria Felicien. All the women mentioned have inspired me in many ways. Seeing Black women my age (or close to my age) pushed me to publish my first novel. I had this misconception that I had to be older, or more mature, which was silly.

It is never too early to follow your dreams.

What are some of the ways that you think we can start overcoming the stigma of romance novels?

I think that people need to get off their high horse when it comes to romance. Love, sex, and relationships are things that most people experience in life. Every other aspect of the human experience is written about and people typically love it. So why do people turn their nose up at romance novels? Romance novels can be emotional, poetic, and are written beautifully. I never get tired of reading about love.

The people who don’t read romance are truly missing out.

Do you currently have any books in the works? Is there anything that you are looking forward to writing, but haven’t started yet?

Currently, I am working on a Christmas novel titled, My One Christmas Wish. It is available for preorder and will be available on December 19th (my birthday). It’s a friends to lovers story, so I am super excited about it. Next year, I look forward to writing my first close proximity story. Hopefully, it will be done by Spring 2021!

Thank you so much for coming by Angel Reads. It was lovely having you here. And I can’t wait to read more of your books!

It was a pleasure. Thank you for having me!
