Discussion: Physical book versus ebook

January 6, 2014 Posted by angelreads Discussions 9 Comments

So I was thinking the other day what kinda of discussion I should have. I have been thinking about doing these sort of post for a while now and I just never could think of anything that I thought would make a good discussion but then I saw a post on facebook not sure as to where about Physical books and ebooks and to which is better and my head just started spinning with all my ideas, my thoughts and then bam! I thought this would make a perfect discussion post.

There is a long debate at to which is better, the physical book or the ebook. Even though I do prefer the physical book, the ebook is just as useful, even maybe a little more. There are pro’s and con’s for both.

Pile of Books    ebook

There us heaps of advantages of both Physical books and ebooks.

Pros

Physical Books: There are many pro’s of Physical books, either paperback or hardback which ever that you prefer you can get. I love seeing books lined up on my shelf, I love counting the books. I love seeing the series standing next to each other. I really like the way the books smell and feel in my hands. I also love going to book stores and just looking at all the books – I could stay there for hours. Pricing can range with physical books but you can go to op shops and find some really great books there for some amazing prices, when I go to my local op shop the books range from about $3-$4 which is pretty awesome if I say so myself. You can also get some great deals on online book shops.

ebook: You have all the books that you own on 1 device that you can pretty much carry anywhere. I have a Kobo Mini and I really like it. It fits pretty much in my hand and perfectly in my handbag. If you have a Kindle or a Kindle Devices which I do have as well on my phone you can get heaps of free or 0.99 books which is pretty awesome. You can have hundreds of books on 1 device. You can read the book pretty easy of the train or on a aeroplane pretty much anywhere. Some books or novellas only come in ebook form.

But theses Pros weight up with Con’s

Con’s

Physical Book: They are pretty expensive sometimes, especially if it’s a new release, or hardback’s. I know in the US they mainly just release hardbacks first so if you are waiting for a books you have to pay up to $20+ sometimes. You need heaps of room to store the books. I know at the moment I am in need of a new book shelf – there is no room on mine at all. Books are pretty heavy so when you are travelling you cannot take or buy that many. You also need to have quite a big bag to fit the book when you are going to work, going on the train etc.

ebooks: You need to buy the device and sometimes they are expensive, yer you might save after you buy it but you still need quite a bit to buy it. Also sometimes ebooks are more expensive then the actual physical book. My Kindle version of The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead cost me more then my paperback version which confused the hell out of me. You would think because they are not using paper, ink, time to make the book, it would be less expensive.  Also you need to charge your device, it only last a certain couple of hours and then you have to let it charge for a bit, which a physical book you can pick it up and read it for as long as you want.

I brought my Kobo Mini so I could get books that only come in ebook form, it is really helpful in that way, also when I’m away from home I don’t need to fill half my bag with books. Even though I do like my Kobo I would pick a physical book over it any day. There is just something about them. That is not saying I don’t use my Kobo because I do. I was once having this conversation on Twitter and someone said to me that they would never buy an ebook, I asked why and they said because the Author doesn’t get the money or something like that. I was just so confused about what this person knew about books. They author still gets their money for the book they sold in what ever format it is.

What do you think of the debate of physical books vs ebooks? Leave a comment down below or make a blog post about it. I would love to hear others opinions

I always prefer physical books over ebooks for the same reasons you’ve mentioned. At the same time, I love my Kindle. I love how easy it is to transport, especially on long trips. I love physical books the most, but ebooks do have worth. Great post!

The only time I prefer physical books is for my craft books. I prefer to have the color and be able to flip through the pages.

For reading, I prefer e-books. (1) I have moved several times in the last few years. Packing my kindle is much easier than packing my 200+ craft book collection. (2) I can change the font so the e-book is easier to read. Sometimes physical books use a small font or tiny margins to squeeze a book into a tiny paperback. With an e-book, I can change all of this. (3) No matter the number of pages, I can easily hold my kindle in one hand and turn the pages with a tap of a finger. I don’t have to sit in a particular way to keep the book open like I do with large physical books. (4) I don’t need to worry about losing my place.

Hmm that is really interesting. But yes totally agree, I am so not looking forward to the day I move out because with the amount of books I have and I protective of them I am, yer not going to end well. I have never had much trouble with the font I think I have more trouble with the font on my kobo especially when I read earcs on there and they only come in 1 form so it’s hard to get it to fit nicely on the kobo.

I think I will always prefer a physical book. I like to flip the pages, fill it up with post-it notes and be able to *see* where I am but the truth is they take up too much space. So a majority of my books are ebooks these days but if I love something I buy a physical copy to keep.

It’s hard for me to pick which I like most. I LOVE having a hardcover so I can see the pretty on my shelf and I like use sticky tabs for places I want to remember and it’s pretty easy. But sometimes holding them as I read can be uncomfortable. I have a kindle and a nook and I enjoy them too but I always feel like they aren’t completely mine because they are not physically right there. I’m weird. lol

Agree with totally. That look just so beautiful on the shelf but then uncomfortable when holding. I feel the same about my Kobo. and you are not wired

I love them both and I’m glad I don’t have to choose. Real books are so pretty and smell so delicious. But there’s nothing like having an e-reader stashed in my bag for when I need something to read. And having e-books means that my shelves stay a little neater…

Thanks so much for stopping by! Jen @ YA Romantics

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.

Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I onl Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I only ended up reading 3 books in. 3 pretty fun books but one of my slowest readings months in a while.

And I’m going to be honest here it’s because I’ve been constantly reading Heated Rivalry fanfics. 🤷‍♀️ I’m having the best time though.

How was your reading in February? Any 5 star reads?
