Armchair BEA 2016: Introduction

Armchair BEA 2016: Introduction

May 12, 2016

Armchair BEA

This is my first year participating in Armchair BEA and I have no idea how many of these posts I will be doing or how I can participate because I do run on Australian time, but I am ready for some fun. Here is my introduction and all that. Hope you enjoy and have fun.

If you don’t know what Armchair BEA is, it is basically for all those people who cannot make it to BEA (Book Expo America).

Me and MeganWhat is the name you prefer to use?

I go my Angel here on my blog, hence the name Angel Reads. However, as quite a few people know my full name is Angelique. I don’t let many people know my last name simple because I do want some things kept undisclosed.

How long have you been a book blogger?

I celebrated my 4th Book Blogger Anniversary this year, so I am currently in my 5th year of blogging.

Have you participated in ABEA before?

Not fully, I have participated in twitter parties and such, but haven’t done this before.

What is your favourite genre and why?

Up until a few years ago all I read was Urban Fantasy, Fantasy and Supernatural. I love it, it’s fun and different and you never know what is around the corner. If I had a choose between a contemporary novel and one of these genre, I would go for them.

In saying that I do like my contemporary and sometimes I do need to get back to the real world.

The Winner's - BEA

If you could recommend one other book blogger, who would it be and why?

You are all probably following her but, Cait at Paper Fury is pretty amazing. And because I like to cheat (not really) also Nick and Nereyda from Nick and Nereydas infinite booklist.

If you could create a playlist that reflects your bookshelf, what would be the first song you choose?

I really don’t know – but a song about mess, cause that is what it is at the moment.
How do you arrange your bookshelves? Is there a rhyme or reason? Or not at all?

Like above right now they are a mess, but most of the time I like to organise the read books in readership so non-fiction, adult, classic, and YA and then by author. But my TBR so just where ever it fits.

What book are you most excited for on your TBR? What are you most intimidated by?

Yellow by Megan Jacobson, I picked it up when I went to #YASquad2016 and just have not had a chance to read it yet.

The Diviners by Libba Bray has been on my TBR so quite some time, but I just keep putting it off and off same with Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

Jay Kristoff - BEA

What is the most interesting thing that you have learned through your reading this year so far?

All the things to do with the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in Salt to the Sea.

If you could choose three characters to have lunch with, who would they be and why?

Rose Hathaway from Vampire Academy because it’s Rose why not. Ginny Weasley because I adore her and she is one of my favourite characters from Harry Potter and Kestrel from the Winner’s Trilogy because it would make the lunch quite interesting.

And that is it for this post. Are you participating in ABEA this year? Let’s Chat.

I love talking, so talk to me over on my twitter @angel_reads, Facebook, instagram, tumblr and Goodreads. You can also follow Angel Reads on Bloglovin and via email (in the side bar)

Wicked HeartWicked Heart by Leisa Raven

Pages: –
Publish date: May 3rd 2016
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
ISBN:
Purchase: Amazon UK – Amazon US – Amazon AU – Pan Macmillian

Liam Quinn is talented, gorgeous, and one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

He’s also only man Elissa Holt has ever truly loved.

After being out of her life for six years, he and his gorgeous fiancé are set to star in the new Broadway show Elissa is stage managing. Both Elissa and Liam try to ignore the connection they both still feel, but when late night rehearsals bring them together, the line between what is and what could have been get blurred.

Elissa knows that falling for Liam again would be a tragedy in the making, but as any good romantic will tell you, love doesn’t always follow the script.

Wicked Heart:

I received an e-arc of Wicked Heart by Leisa Raven via Pan Macmillan in conjunction with the Wicked Heart Blog Tour in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.

I have a lot of thoughts about this book, some are bad and same are good, but overall I don’t really know how I feel about Wicked Heart. This is the third book by Leisa Rayven that I have read, I liked the previous two which are both from this series, but I did love them, the problems that I had with them, showed up again in this one.

Wicked Heart follows protagonist, Elissa 4 years after her heart was torn apart. She is a stage manager of a new show and, you guessed it, the person that broke her heart is playing the lead – with his fiancé playing the romantic interest. Elissa now has to deal with trying to be professional and keep her feelings at bay, but it’s just not that easy.

Wicked Heart like the others in the series includes flashbacks, and like her previous novels I wasn’t the biggest fan of them. I would have loved the flashbacks in Wicked Heart if the romance didn’t move like lightning.

Through the main part of the novel, the romance was good. It was steady and not bam; we are in love. However, when Elissa and Liam first meet, it was way too instalove for me.

Wicked Heart quote

If you have read Leisa Rayven’s other novels in this series, you would know that Elissa is Ethan’s sister and we kind of have an idea of who she is from the other books, but in Wicked Heart we really get who she is.

I actually quite liked Elissa as a protagonist, she was easy to get along with and wasn’t whiny however, I did want to knock her about at times regarding her feelings for Liam.

Now Liam, I wasn’t the biggest fan of his. For the most part, I was enjoying him, but then he did things and I just questioned why? Why would he do this? We do find out things throughout the novel to answer most of these, however the reasons behind some of the things weren’t an excuse. I also found that at times he was quite possessive and that just ticks me off.

I really enjoyed the setting of Wicked Heart. I really like the atmosphere of the book that was created because of it being set mainly in a theatre. It’s different from other books and its fun. We get to see more of what happens backstage in Wicked Heart and it was quite intriguing.

I loved the friendship between Elissa and Josh – like can I have this friendship. The banter, the teasing, the way they are always there for each other. It made my heart swell, it was beautiful to see a female/male friendship that wasn’t turned into a romance.

Another thing that I liked about Wicked Heart was the writing. It was easy to read, fun and kept me reading. However, sometimes I didn’t like all the pop cultural references, it just took away from the book.

Overall, I enjoyed Wicked Heart by Leisa Rayven. It was a fun, quick read that was full of romance, banter, laughs and more. Nevertheless, it did have its faults, the romance did move a little fast for me, Liam wasn’t by favourite and I just wanted more, but on a whole it was a fun book.

OZYA Author Interview- Jay Kristoff (1)

I love Aussie YA. I love reading books from authors that live in the same country as me, that know things that people out of Australia might be so confused about. I love how sometimes they can incorporate this into their book and it is fabulous.

So in saying that, I have decided to start a new feature on Angel Reads spotlighting Australian YA Authors. Each Friday for the next couple of months, I am going to interview an OZYA Author. I thought it would be a fun way to share my love for Australian Young Adult authors with not only fellow Aussies, but everyone around the world. I want more Australian YA books to be read, because they are amazing.

First week I interview Sarah Ayoub, then Fleur Ferris, followed by Will Kostakis, then Shivaun Plozza and last weeks guest being Gabrielle Tozer. This week we have none other than Jay Kristoff!

Jay is the author of The Lotus War Series (Pan MacMillian Aus, 2012), The Nevernight Chronicle triology (Harper Voyager, 2016),  LIFEL1K3 (2018) and co author of The Illuminae Files (Allen and Unwin, 2015) and the Andromeda Cycle (2018).

Jay Kristoff author picHi Jay, and welcome to Angel Reads. First can you introduce yourself to everyone? Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Jay. I’m the co-author of Illuminae, and author of The Lotus War and the upcoming Nevernight (aug 2016) and LIFEL1K3 (mid 2016). No, I do not sleep.

What has your writing journey been like? Where did you start? Why?

The trajectory has been wild one, but the journey itself is pretty stock. I wrote a book. Cold queried agents. Got rejected a lot. I wrote another book. Cold queried agents. Got an agent. Got a book deal. And that was it. So there was no secret handshake or magic moment or sacrifices to the Old Ones, just lots of writing and rejection. That’s par for the course in publishing. Rejection is good for the soul.

I started trying to get published about 2010. I’d always written for fun, but never imagined it might actually amount to anything. It was a hobby that, through a lot of work, became a paying gig. So, long, slightly uncomfortable hugs of thanks to everyone who buys my books!

Jay Kristoff books

What was the process of getting your first book published?

Well, after I signed with my agent, there was a round of internal edits, and then we went out on sub. Luckily, we had several houses interested, so the book went to auction. I wrote about the process here.

Stormdance was odd in that I signed a simultaneous deal with a US and UK publishing house. Which meant I had two editors, two rounds of copy edits, two rounds of proofing. I didn’t know better at the time, but this was kind of insane and I’d never do it again.

First book is a very steep learning curve. You’re a babe in the woods in so many respects. All you can do is trust your agent and write the best book you can. Jack Daniels helps. LOTS of Jack Daniels.

Was it different when getting your proceeding books published?

Definitely. Every book is a learning experience. I knew far more about publishing and marketing and the industry itself when Illuminae started gearing up for publication. So, I was far more intimately involved from a production standpoint as well as the actual writing. You’ve seen what works and what doesn’t in previous books, so you know what to ask for and what to aim for. Plus, you understand how much of a factor luck is in any book’s success, so you can relax a little (or get more uptight, depending on your personality.)

Again, Jack Daniels helps.

Fun Fact about Jay Kristoff

What was the difference between getting your books published here in Australia and internationally?

Australia tends to get a lot of its properties in conjunction with UK houses. So, on the Lotus War, Tor UK bought the rights and PanMac in Aus were part of that deal. Similarly, with Nevernight Harper Voyager in the UK bought the rights, so Harper here will be publishing the series in the ANZ market.

Illuminae was slightly different, in that Amie had such a great experience with Allen & Unwin on Starbound, she wanted them to get first slice. So we negotiated a separate deal from the UK. A&U are fantastic – couldn’t be happier with the work they’ve done on Illuminae.

Australia tends to take its cues from larger markets – the US has much larger budgets and a much larger population, so typically, Australian publishers will try to leverage that overseas buzz into their efforts here. Which makes perfect sense. We’re crafty little buggers down here, and Australian publishers do an incredible job with what is typically very scarce resources.

You are an OZYA author, what are some of your favourite Aussie YA books?

Ellie Marney’s Every series is simply brill – Ellie is auto-buy for me. Anything by Garth Nix, although I’ll always have a soft spot for Shade’s Children. Justine Larbalestier’s new book, My Sister Rosa is wonderfully chilling. The Starbound series by my co-author Amie Kaufman and her other partner in crime Meg Spooner is fantastic. I’ve just started reading Green Valentine by Lili Wilkinson and even though I suspect I am so NOT the target market, I’m loving it. Very bright, very funny.

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Vict Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Victoria Wilder’s Bourbon Boys series, and as soon as I heard she was writing a new series, around whiskey and women. Well, hell year. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but after a few chapters, I was hooked.

Wyn is hiding, hiding from everyone, even when she is there. She is hiding behind so much, and damn, I don’t blame her. We don’t know everything from the start, but we start piecing things together, and my heart broke. And I was terrified for her. But she is a Crowne woman, and that means something.

We’ve met Julian before, and while he intrigued me before, I am invested now. He is charming, secretive in the best way and will do anything at this point for Wyn. But he is also lost, and somehow he finds his way to Rumour and back into Wyn’s life.

The romance is hot and steamy and everything that you want. The tension and chemistry in this one is high. Neither Wyn nor Julian wants to really give in or give up on one another, but a lot is standing in their way, honestly, mainly themselves. I just sat there giggling half the time because they are swoon-worthy.

I would say this is the darkest Victoria Wilder book I’ve read, so double-check those trigger warnings before jumping in because there is a lot that happens. And I don’t think it’s going to die down any time soon because these Crowne women are badass, and I know things are only just getting started.

Overall, Rumors & Whiskey is hot and sexual. The tension is dripping off the page, and then you are thrown into the terror and horrors of Rumour. You don’t know what is going to happen next, you don’t know who to trust, and there are so many more secrets that have yet to be revealed. I know I am ready for more. Are you?

Thank you to @atriabooksaus for an earc of Rumors & Whiskey 🥃. I’m in love.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!
