Frankie Vega is angry. Just ask the guy whose nose she broke. Or the cop investigating the burglary she witnessed, or her cheating ex-boyfriend or her aunt who’s tired of giving second chances…
When a kid shows up claiming to be Frankie’s half brother, it opens the door to a past she doesn’t want to remember. And when that kid goes missing, the only person willing to help is a boy with stupidly blue eyes … and secrets of his own.
Frankie’s search for the truth might change her life, or cost her everything.

Frankie:

Frankie by Shivaun Plozza was one of my most anticipated books this year by an Australian author, it just sounded like my kind of book and it was. Frankie was a heartbreaking, heart-warming and absorbing contemporary that captures the reader from the first page.

Frankie follows protagonist Frankie Vega as she goes on a journey of self-discovery, more heartbreak and finding her place. Frankie is a usual protagonist, she is mean, rude, hard-headed and feisty, but not in the way that makes you want to put the book down and stop reading, no it is quite the opposite, her attitude makes you want to keep on reading.

When a kid shows up saying that he is Frankie’s half-brother, she doesn’t know what to do. Does she trust him and let him in her and let him break her like everyone else? Or she let him go now? But it’s Frankie we are talking about and she cannot let things, so when he goes missing, she does everything in her will power and power to find out where he is.

I adored Frankie, I would not want her to be my best friend because we would clash all the time, but she was such a fascinating protagonist.  Frankie is fierce and strong and if I went missing, I would want her out there looking for me. She has had a tough life and she channels that and comes off as this ‘bad’ girl that is always getting into trouble.

She lives with her Aunt Vinne above her aunt’s Kebab shop, she has been kicked out of school and doesn’t want anyone to know and her supposed brother has just gone missing, oh and you know what this gorgeous boy with stupidly blue eyes comes into the mix. Lets’ just say that Frankie has a lot on her plate.

Frankie Quote

There were parts in the book where all I wanted to do was hug Frankie, but I feel that she might punch me in the face if I did that. There were parts that also made me cry, right near the end – arrg my heart.

I enjoyed the relationship between Frankie and her Aunt. Even thought at times it was a bit strained, it worked quite well for the situation that they were both in.

The romance was such a little piece of Frankie, but it was beautifully done. There wasn’t a need for a bubbling romance, but the way that Plozza handle it was perfect. Nate was intense and intriguing and capture Frankie in a way no way else had before.  It was slightly there, but it did add to both the story and the characterisation of Frankie.

I adored that Frankie was set in Melbourne. It’s my home, and sometimes it does get boring when books are all set in the same place or places that I have no clue about. Even though I don’t live in Collingwood, I know how it looks and feels so it was truly interesting. Plozza has captured Melbourne perfectly.

Overall, Frankie by Shivaun Plozza is a brilliant debut novel that captured my heart. It’s a story of heartbreak, belonging, finding yourself and what it is to be a family. It captures Melbourne as Melbourne from the language to the setting, it brings to light that sometimes when you think that you are alone, you are not alone and all that you need to do is let them in. Frankie by Shivaun Plozza is a must read.

Childhood TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. All bloggers are then welcomed to join. This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about Childhood so I picked my Top Six Childhood Books.

I have always read or have read to me. It has always been part of my life. However, it was really hard to think of books from my Childhood, so here a few that I have reread countless times, love and adored.

Childhood 1

Harry Potter by J.K Rowling: The first edition of Harry Potter that I have is from 2001, I was only 5 years old. That is how long Harry Potter has been in my life. When I think of books that I read or had read to me when I was a child, the first thing that comes to my mind is Harry Potter without a doubt. My mum read them to me, until I could and I have been re-reading them ever since.

I don’t know what my childhood would be without Harry Potter – pretty boring I think.

The Sleepover Club by Rose Impey: This was probably one of my favourite TV shows when I was younger and if you are not from Australia, but you love watching Reign and The 100, you might know a few of the girls. I have no idea how many of these books I read, but it was quite a few.

If I Ran a Circus by Dr. Seuss: This is my favourite Dr. Seuss books. I have no idea how many times I reread this book, but I used to know it by heart.

Childhood 2

The BFG by Roald Dahl: I love Roald Dahl, I have read quite a lot of his books, but this has to be my favourite and reminds me so much of my childhood.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett: I am cheating a little with this one, because I didn’t read the book until I was older, however I adored the movie. I think maybe because Maggie Smith was in it, but I loved it.

The Two of a Kind Series by Mary-Kate and Ashley: I loved the girly books, they were fun to read especially the friendship aspect. Again there is quite a couple of these and I have no idea how many I have read.

Well that is all I can remember from my Childhood. What are some of your favourites? What did you love? Let’s Chat.

April Wrap Up

April has been a wired month for me. At the start I was reading and posting heaps, but for the last two weeks I have been in a reading slump and it’s really been annoying. However, I think I am finally out of it and I’m nearly finished Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

I am still trying to get 3-4 posts a week out and I think that is working really well, it might be a little slow in May because the semester is coming to an end at Uni and I have a couple of big assessments coming up.

This month I also started my #LoveOZYA feature, where I Interview Aussie Young Adult authors. So far on Angel Reads I’ve had; Sarah Ayoub, Fleur Ferris, Will Kostakis, Shivaun Plozza and Gabrielle Tozer. It’s been amazing so far, however there is still more to come.

It was also Supanova time here in Melbourne and for the first time I volunteered. It was such an amazing experience, exhausting but amazing. I meet Bonnie Wright, Daniel Sharman, Richard Harmon and Sachin Sahel. (I was also working on Richard and Scahin autograph lines through the weekend).

Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Vict Yeah, this is what I wanted. I really enjoyed Victoria Wilder’s Bourbon Boys series, and as soon as I heard she was writing a new series, around whiskey and women. Well, hell year. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but after a few chapters, I was hooked.

Wyn is hiding, hiding from everyone, even when she is there. She is hiding behind so much, and damn, I don’t blame her. We don’t know everything from the start, but we start piecing things together, and my heart broke. And I was terrified for her. But she is a Crowne woman, and that means something.

We’ve met Julian before, and while he intrigued me before, I am invested now. He is charming, secretive in the best way and will do anything at this point for Wyn. But he is also lost, and somehow he finds his way to Rumour and back into Wyn’s life.

The romance is hot and steamy and everything that you want. The tension and chemistry in this one is high. Neither Wyn nor Julian wants to really give in or give up on one another, but a lot is standing in their way, honestly, mainly themselves. I just sat there giggling half the time because they are swoon-worthy.

I would say this is the darkest Victoria Wilder book I’ve read, so double-check those trigger warnings before jumping in because there is a lot that happens. And I don’t think it’s going to die down any time soon because these Crowne women are badass, and I know things are only just getting started.

Overall, Rumors & Whiskey is hot and sexual. The tension is dripping off the page, and then you are thrown into the terror and horrors of Rumour. You don’t know what is going to happen next, you don’t know who to trust, and there are so many more secrets that have yet to be revealed. I know I am ready for more. Are you?

Thank you to @atriabooksaus for an earc of Rumors & Whiskey 🥃. I’m in love.

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!
