Tattoos and Football| Mariana Zapata Mini Reviews

Tattoos and Football| Mariana Zapata Mini Reviews

Oct 19, 2020

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been slowly reading my way through Mariana Zapata’s backlist and newer titles. So today I thought I would share my thoughts on some of the recent ones that I have read. I’ve had an up and down relationship with Mariana Zapata books. I’ve really enjoyed some and then just liked some. You can also check out my mini-review of Luna and the Lie.

Today I’ll be reviewing Under Locke and Hands Down. It’s a mix of a backlist title and her newest release.

Under Locke by Mariana Zapata

He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widower, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me.

After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly… even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time.

And the last thing they ever expected was each other.

But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop.

… she should have chosen the strip club

Under Locke:

I think this has to be one of my favourites of the Marina Zapata that I’ve read so far. One of the things that Zapata is very good at slow-burn romances. And when I say slow I mean very slow. But it’s different and I really enjoyed that.

Under Locke follows Iris Taylor who has recently moved to Austin to be with her half brother. She is broke and just wants a fresh start. And when Sonny gets her a job at a tattoo shop owned by his friend Dex, she thinks she is finally on her way to starting again. But Dex Locke isn’t all that nice. He is hot-headed, rude, impatient and a jerk at times. But as they spend more time together Iris and Dex get to know different sides to one another and sparks start to fly.

Iris was an interesting protagonist. I didn’t love her like I normally do with a female protagonist, but as the novel went on I grew to like her. Iris just needs to help in life. She feels lost and doesn’t even know when to begin and when she lands the job at Dex’s place, she thinks she can get that start. One of my favourite things about Under Locke is that the reader gets to see Iris grow throughout the novel and not only find herself, but those around her.

Dex is great. It took me a long time to get to like him as a character. However as the novel went on and Iris got to know him better, I enjoyed him more. Dex is stubborn and impatient and at times that made me really dislike him. But like Iris, he grew throughout the novel and let go of his demons.

The romance was interesting, to say the least. It’s a very much slow burn and I liked seeing both Iris and Dex slowly fall for one another. It’s a hate to love romance for sure and it was really well done. The romance moved nicely and I liked the built-up and the tension. It was hot and sweet at the same time.

Overall, I loved reading Under Locke by Mariana Zapata. It’s got a slight MC undertone and you know that I love my MC romances. I adored the slow burn of the romance. It’s different to see it and I enjoyed the change. In saying that at times I did feel that it went a little too slow. I adored the banter between Iris and everyone at the tattoo shop, it just made the novel that much more entertaining. The romance was great and I had a fantastic time reading it. I think this is a great one to start with for sure.

Hands Down
by Mariana Zapata

Publish date: July 2nd 2020

Before he was Big Texas, he was Zac the Snack Pack.

Bianca Brannen knows time—mostly—heals all wounds. Including those, your once loved ones might have unintentionally given you. (Those just take longer.)

She thinks she’s ready when a call has her walking back into her old friend’s life. Or at least as prepared as possible to see the starting quarterback in the National Football Organization. Before the lights, the fans, and the millions, he’d been a skinny kid with a heart of gold.

Waltzing out of Zac Travis’s life should be easy. Just as easy as he walked out of hers.

Hands Down:

This is Mariana Zapata’s newest release and my least favourite of the books that I’ve now read. I couldn’t connect with the characters and the story. And it was way too long.

Hands Down follows Bianca Brannen as she is dragged back into Zac Travis life. Friends from a young age they connected right away, but as they got older they started to drift. So much so that they haven’t talked in some time. But it was good for Bianca, and then she is dragged back into this life and old feelings rise to the surface. Will she survive being back in his life again?

Bianca was pretty easy to get along with, I didn’t mind her as a protagonist. However, it was hard to connect with her. In saying that I did enjoy Bianca’s character arc. The reader is able to see her grow throughout the book and find herself.

On the other hand, I didn’t like Zac all too much. He didn’t feel real. One of my favourite things about romances is how real the characters can sometimes feel, and I didn’t get that here. I kept on waiting for more from him and I didn’t get it. There were times where I was thinking I was going to start liking him and then he did something stupid.

The romance is a mix of second chance plus friends to lovers and I didn’t love it. I normally love age gap romances, but I don’t think it was done great here. The age gap isn’t big, but it felt strange. I think it was mostly to do with how Zac talked about and to Bianca that made it hard to read. Heaps of reviews mentioned this, but the number of times he refers to her as ‘kiddo’ just put me off the romance.

Hands Down also felt too long. It was over 500 pages and for a contemporary romance that just way too much for me. There was so much angst and drama, that it did a little too much for me. I did like that the romance was another slow burn. I’ve come to learn that Mariana Zapata is pretty good at writing great slow-burn romances.

Overall Hands Down by Mariana Zapata was an okay read. I had problems with it, but I didn’t hate it. It’s probably my least favourite of her books that I’ve read so far, but it won’t be stopping me from trying more. The romance was okay, I wasn’t able to fully connect with the characters and that made liking the romance a little harder. It’s a decent read and fans of Mariana Zapata will enjoy it.

From the moment Quinn Montgomery sat behind her first snare and cymbal set, she was destined for fame and glory. As Hush Note’s infamous female drummer, she sets the rhythm for the band’s chart-topping hits. When people tap their feet to their music, it’s to her pulse.

Quinn is content to live in a world away from her family and the cage of her youth. Her only regret is leaving Graham Hayes behind without a goodbye. No matter how many sold-out stadiums she plays, no matter how many crowds sing her songs, his voice haunts her when the music stops.

When a family tragedy forces her to return home to Montana, she plans to leave the second she’s paid her respects. But seeing Graham again turns her life upside down. As a boy, he wasn’t able to make her stay. As a man, he might be her future.

If they can mend their rifts and find solace in the refrains.

Rifts and Refrains:

I’m doing my review a little backwards for this series, but you can check out my reviews on Lies & Lullabies by Sarina Bowen and Muses & Melodies by Rebecca Yarros. I love reading both of them and Rifts and Refrains by Deveny Perry was no different. This is the second Deveny Perry book I’ve read and let me tell you, I loved this one a lot.

Rifts and Refrains follow Hush Note drummer Quinn as she returns home for a family tragedy. But her return home isn’t easy. It was never going to be. It’s been a long time since she returned home to Montana. Quinn was pretty content with her life and the choices that she made, her only regret was leaving Graham behind. And now that she is back old feelings come to the surface, and will she able to leave this time and survive.

Quinn was an interesting character in the first book. I didn’t hate her or even like her. And the reader gets to see many different sides of her in Rifts and Refrains and I adored that. Quinn is a little rough around the edges and as the novel goes on we get to see why. We get to see the fallout of her leaving home. It was hard to watch Quinn with her family. She tried anything and everything for their approvable and she just didn’t get it for a long time.

Graham was such an interesting character. It took a little while for me to warm up to him but as soon as he and Quinn started to reconnect it was great. He resented Quinn for a lot of things, but when he sees that it wasn’t perfect and how her relationship with her family is pretty much non-existent, he understood a little more. I adored Graham’s relationship with his son Colin. Gosh, my heart. It was beautiful.

The romance had it’s many ups and downs in Rifts and Refrains. It took a long time for Quinn and Graham to connect once again. They both had their demons and they both hurt one another. And that played on each of their minds. But slowly as both Quinn and Graham grieve, they reconnect with one another. It was sweet, sexy and such a fantastic second chance romance. I do wish we got some flashbacks like the other books in the series. It would have been great seeing Quinn and Graham first falling in love as well

Photo by Timo Stern on Unsplash

There are some pretty emotional moments in Rifts and Refrains. Quinn doesn’t return home for a holiday. She is there to lay her grandmother to rest. Her grandmother was the one person that stood by her when she left. She is only the person that was proud of her no matter what. It was hard seeing Quinn having to deal with this, on her own for most of it. But it was also fantastic seeing the other members of Hush Note pop up. It was sweet actually. The reader can see that together they have made their own family.

As I said before Quinns family was hard to connect with. Graham truly got to see the heartache and hurt her family caused following her Grandmothers funeral. I don’t think he even got it to them. It was hard reading how hurt Quinn was by her family, but she still tried to put on a brave face. Quinn’s family was very hard to like. Each of them had their faults in the way that they treated her. But as the novel went on, the reader gets to know them a little bit more.

Overall, Rifts and Refrains by Deveny Perry was everything that I wanted. It was hard to read at times, but it was also beautiful. It’s a fantastic second chance romance that hit all the spots. Quinn and Graham were adorable and sexy and fit together so well. I also adored the bond that Quinn and Colin built and it just made everything better. This is a great second book in the series and I plan to read more Deveny Perry books for sure.

Series Review: Psy-Changeling Series by Nalini Singh #1

Series Review: Psy-Changeling Series by Nalini Singh #1

Oct 11, 2020

It’s been a long time coming, but I finally started the Psy-Changeling by Nalini Singh. It’s one that has been on my radar for a long time. I always walk past it at work and go to pick it up, but never have. But with Nick talking about it and loving it so much, I had to give in. And I fell in love. So today I thought I share my thoughts on the first four books in the series that I have read.

The Psy-Changeling series follows two Changeling packs, the DarkRiver Leopards, and the SnowDancer Wolf Pack as well as the emotionless Psy and humans who at first seems to be the weakest of them all, but now fields are levelling and things are about to get interesting.

Slave to Sensation: I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading this series. I haven’t read many paranormal romances before. But as soon as I started reading Slave to Sensation, I knew that I made the right decision. The first book in this series follows Sascha Duncan as she tries to hide her emotions that her kind deems flawed. Because if the Psy knew, it wouldn’t be good for her. When Lucas first meets Sasha, he thinks she is his ticket for answers, but he soon learns that she is more than she seems. But they both come from conflicting worlds and on different sides of a brewing war. Will they give in to temptation or hold their feelings close to their hearts?

Slave to Sensation is the perfect start to this series. It’s fast-paced, sexy and takes you for a ride. As soon as I started it, I feel in love with the characters, plot, writing and world, and I couldn’t it down.

Sasha was such an interesting protagonist. At first, the reader thinks that she is cold and calculated. But as the novel goes on, we understand that it’s a front. Not only does she have to hide her emotions from the Psy council but it’s the way she has been taught. I adored that Lucas and the rest of the DarkRiver Leopards can break her down and show her a new way of life.

Lucas was an alpha male in more ways than one, but he was also sweet and would do anything for the people he loves. It was great to see this contrast. I also love seeing how different authors write ‘true alphas.’ And I think that Nalini can have a great balance here.

The romance was adorable, sexy and everything that I look for. I like that it was a forbidden romance combined with an enemy to lovers. It was fantastic. I adored that the reader can see both Lucas and Sasha slowly fall for one another. It was especially interesting to see Sasha discover her feelings and what they are.

One of my favourite things about Slave to Sensation was that everything wasn’t info dumped. I sometimes find that when I start a new series, especially one with a world as advance as in this series. Things can be thrown at the reader. But information about the world and characters were slowly dripped into the book and it made for such a great read.

Overall, I adored Slave to Sensation. It was a fantastic first book and explores not only Sasha and Lucas. But the world as well. Plus, I haven’t even talked about the Cubs. Oh gosh. They are incredible. I love the world, the characters, the pact and everything else. Basically, I knew I would love the rest of the series, just from this book.

Visions of Heat: When visions of blood and murder start to torment Faith NightStar it’s a bad sign for anyone. As an F-Psy she is widely sought out for her ability to predict the future. But she has to be careful, and when the visions turn to something even more dangerous, she doesn’t know what to do. Because succumbing to these desires, could also mean the end of her. When Faith catches the eye of changeling Vaughn D’Angelo things are about to get even more interesting. But while Vaughn wants sensation, it could snap Faith’s last thread of sanity.

Visions of Heat was a fantastic second book and not only introduced us to some new characters but made sure the characters we already love is present. I felt that this one had a different feel to the previous book, and I loved that.

Faith was intriguing from the get-go. I loved that we get to know more about the Psy world with her gift. It was a fantastic way to see more of the world, without info dumpling everything. Faith had to do a lot of growing throughout the book and it was nice to see. The reader gets to see Faith not only discover the world but also rediscover herself.

Vaughn caught my eye from the first book and I’m glad that we were able to get to his book early. He is intense and mysterious and that made for a great male protagonist. He is different from the others in his pack. Yet they still treat him like family, and I adored that.

The romance was once again fantastic in Visions of Heat. It was intense and interesting, and I adored seeing both of them fall for one another. Like Sasha, Faith doesn’t understand the notion of emotions add to that she is an F-Psy and things get intense. It was great to see the contrast between the two. I liked how Vaughn didn’t push Faith and let her grow on her own, but also gave her a little shove when she needed it.

The plot is pushed again in this one and the overall arching plot starts to take form. I love that we get to know more about the world as a whole throughout the book and it builds on things we know from book one. It’s really well done and I wish more authors were able to do it this way.

Overall, Visions of Heat was a fantastic read. I loved the intensity, the feeling like the reader is on the edge most of the time and how everything is moving forward. The romance was steamy and intense. It explores first love, new sensations and learning to understand again. Faith and Vaughn felt different from Sasha and Lucas but still had the same energy that I love.

Caressed by Ice: Judd Lauren was once an elite Arrow soldier forced to do terrible things for his people. Now in hiding with the people he once called his enemy. Once a deadly assassin he was cold and callous until he meets Brenna. Before she was abducted Brenna was innocent. Now her she evil runs deep inside of her. And when a body turns up, Brenna feels like she could fall to the maddens, but Judd is her hope. But her intensity goes again everything that makes up Judd. Now they both have many things to overcome.

Judd is such an interesting protagonist in Caressed by Ice. He has some pretty horrible demons. As an Arrow, he had to do things at the time he thought was right, but as his time with them went on he knew they weren’t. And when his family walked into trouble, he had to step in and help. It was fascinating seeing him understand what he did and how he learns to live a new life. He has to come to terms with this new chance of life he has been given.

With older brothers and an overprotective pack, Brenna needs some air. Ever since she was recused from a serial killer, she has needed space. Her mind was violated, and she has never felt the same. She feels like she is suffocating. I liked that the reader gets to see Brenna heal throughout the novel. And while she isn’t 100 per cent, we get to see her make some process.

The romance was so well done in Caressed by Ice. It was sweet and steamy and just worked so well. Both Judd and Brenna have had a lot happen to them. And it takes them both a long time to give in to each other. I liked that they both helped each other as well let each other find themselves.

I felt that this was one of the darker books in this series so far. Everything is starting to build up. People are dying, people getting seriously hurt. It’s intense and at times I didn’t know what was going to happen next.

Overall, I just love this series. Caressed by Ice is very different from the first two books. It still has the same feel and there is no doubt its part of the same series, but I feel it’s much darker. Both our protagonists have been through a lot, they both have many demons to overcome. It’s also our first real look at the SnowDancer Wolf Pack which I loved. It’s a fantastic addition to the series.

Photo by sifa diratama on Unsplash

Mine to Possess: As a powerful sentinel of the DarkRiver pack, Clay Bennett has a place where he feels like he belongs. But it wasn’t always that way. Growing up with his human mother he didn’t know his changeling father. He didn’t know the like of a pack member. Because of that, he tried to hide his animal nature and because of that, he murdered someone. And that he lost more than his freedom he lost his best friend Talin. Talin McKade just survived her childhood. She never thought she would see Clay again, but she needs help and he is the only that can help her. But seeing each other again brings back old memories and some of them aren’t good.

This is the first book in the series where the love interest is human. Which was so intriguing. It added another element to the series and more depth. It’s a strange feeling. There is so much going on in this series. But I never feel overwhelmed – and I think that is fantastic.

Clay is one of the darker characters from the series. He has demos that he has never been able to deal with and with Talin back in his life, it’s time to. For a long time, he believed that she was dead, and it hurts him a lot when he finds out that she is alive. It was interesting seeing the dynamic of Clay change and grow throughout the book.

Talin was interesting. I didn’t fall in love with her right away, like other characters in the series. It took me a while to warm up to her. But as Mine to Possess went on and she started to let go a little, I enjoyed her a lot. Like Clay, she has been through a lot before the novel. And all she wants to do now is find the children that she has grown to love.

The romance in Mine to Possess is a mix of second chance and friends to lovers. While they weren’t together before, I think in time it could have happened. And because of all their past, they want to be friends at first. They both have issues with one another and as the novel goes on, they start to fall.

We get to see much more of the world in this book. We get to meet different changelings, humans and even Psy. Some interesting things happen in this novel and it again pushes the overarching plot of the series forward. I’m enjoying that while each book has its own storyline, it still adds to the series.

Overall, Mine to Possess is a fantastic addition to the series. I liked that Clay and Talin were different from other couples in the series. It was interesting seeing the human and changeling dynamic. It’s also a second chance, friends to lover’s romance and I’m here for that. Plus, more cubs. I can’t deal with baby shifters. I just can’t.

Overall I am just loving this series so far. I’ve currently got all the books up to book 11. I’m trying to take this series slow and just read a few books at a time. But it’s hard because I’m just enjoying it so much. I’m loving all the characters, the world, the writing, the plot. The cubs! It’s all fantastic.

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
