It’s hard to be the new girl, but it’s even harder being the new girl who races dirt bikes . . . Ever since her parents forced her to move from Canada to Silvertown, Colorado, Clover Kassedy hasn’t fit in. So how do you deal when everyone hates you? Focusing all her energy on racing her motorcycle did it for a while, but now that Clover’s managed to find a bestie and a boyfriend, the pressure on the sixteen-year-old is worse than ever. She’s determined to get to the World Championships, where she could finally meet her idol – an Australian, the World Champion – and have a shot at becoming a professional dirt bike racer. But with her super- competitive dad, workaholic mother and relentless bullies at races and at high school, Clover is struggling to make her dreams a reality. Will it be her scheming ex-best-friend who shatters her world? Or will she let her ‘perfect’ boyfriend – the guy who has finally made her feel like she belongs in their school and their town – stop her from becoming an international racing star?

Author Interview

How did you come up with the idea for Rev Girl?
My first draft of REV GIRL was based very closely on my own life. Throughout the drafts and on the advice of my editors, the story took on a life of its own and Clover Kassedy developed a lot as a character. I guess I took the advice “write what you know” quite literally lol. I also gained a lot of inspiration for the story and for Clover as a character from the kick-butt Real Life REV GIRLS – please check them out at my website www.leighhuttonbooks.com

What is Clover (the main protagonist) like in Rev Girl?
Clover becomes a strong, independent young woman who’s capable and able to stand alone, but this doesn’t come easy to her. Like so many teens, she struggles to fit in, to deal with bullies and peer pressure and boys and resisting the party “cool kid” scene. She also has a wicked sweet tooth and is crap at math (both are points that hit close to home for me 😉
Who are your most loved and most hated character in your book and why?
Wow, great question! What a tough question… I think, like in real life, this isn’t always black and white. Dallas, for example, can be one of my favourite characters but in the same breath, I can also hate him. Relationships are complex, people are flawed and difficult and beautiful all at the same time. There’s a lot of characters like that in REV GIRL and in my second book, JUMP GIRL. That said, there ARE two clear villains in REV GIRL, and I definitely hate at least one of them. They both bully Clover and many of the other kids in her school and at races. I’d like to say more about these two girls, but I don’t want to give the story away! Oh, sorry – I just realised I’d only listed who I hated! How interesting… Well, Clover definitely is a character that I love. She represents myself in a lot of ways and those I hold most dear. I’ve always been a sucker for the underdog. I also love Sydney and Sera, her two best friends, and Kerry, her best racing friend. And Ryder. I definitely love Ryder, too.
How do you just sit down and write?
Another toughie! Nice work, Angel 😉 It’s like getting fit. Hard as buggery to start, but once you’ve been to the gym a few times and the endorphins start to kick in – you start to get hooked. The key is to form a routine. This was easier for me than people who start writing seriously when they have a lot of time on their hands; I only had two hours a day during baby nap time and about an hour at night so as soon as the little man was asleep I’d make myself a cup of green tea, sit down at my computer and lose myself in the beautiful thrill of creativity. But there are tough days. Days it literally hurts to write each word. Days your muscles burn and you have to FORCE yourself to do every minute on the treadmill. Pushing through these days is hard. But I can guarantee that the next day will be easier. And before you know it, word-by-word as Anne Lamott would say, you’ve got a first draft of a novel. Force yourself to make a routine of writing.
If you could go anywhere in the world, real or fiction, where would it be and why? I would go back to Canada to see my friends and family. It’s been way too long. It would be a dream come true to launch my second book, which is set primarily in Calgary (as well as Florida and France) in Brisbane and in Calgary.

If you were stuck on a deserted Island, what are the 5 books that you would have with you and why?
– Game of Thrones Book One because I really want to read it.
– Serena by Ron Rash because his words are gorgeous and I love that freaking book so much.
– Riders by Jilly Cooper because it’s the first book I fell in love with.
– Any of the Hunger Games, because they are gripping enough to hopefully keep my mind from deteriorating to the point where I’m tempted to create an imaginary friend out of a volleyball.
– And Romeo and Juliette by Shakespeare as I think a re-read could teach my a lot.

Thanks so much for having me, Angel. Great interview.

Thank you Leigh for letting me interview you it was a pleasure.

About the Author

Screen Shot 2014-02-19 at 12.24.32 PMLeigh Hutton grew up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was lucky enough to travel extensively with her parents and younger sister, for horse show jumping – they spent a lot of time in Denver, Colorado, and Phoenix, Arizona – as well as holiday trips across America to the Baja Peninsula, and later on for her chosen sport of dirt bike racing. Her favourite race was Honey Lake, California, in 2002 – the same year she attended her first International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in the Czech Republic. Here she met a lovely family from Sydney, as well as the Australian team. Leigh moved to Australia a few months later, to race motorcycles. She fell in love with a fellow racer and Brisbane boy, found journalism, which she studied at the Queensland University of Technology, and shifted into media and public relations, to promote enduro and motocross and its competitors. She’s become especially passionate about promoting girls and women in all action sports. Leigh was a reluctant reader as a teenager, but discovered Jilly Cooper in her early twenties and has been devouring books ever since. She started writing REV GIRL after the birth of her first child, and is ecstatic to be drawing on her experiences to bring you the exciting novels of The Go Girls Chronicles . . . Top Ten Bookish Things That I’d like to Own

Apr 15, 2014
toptentuesday
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. All bloggers are then welcomed to join. This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is:

Top Ten Bookish Things (That Aren’t Books) That I’d Like To Own (new bookshelves, bookends, cool bookmark, a bookish shirt, etc. You can add things you DO own if you want).

1. New Book Shelves: At the moment my books are ending up everywhere. They are stacking up on each other and there is still no room at all. So I am in need of a new one. I don’t want nothing to fancy just one that can fit my books.

2.Kindle: I do have a Kobo mini at the moment, but I would really like a Kindle that I can use for multipurpose things and with me going to University next year therefore catching the train everyday a Kindle would be much easier to handle. Which one do you recommended?
3.  Movie/Book Room: This has already started actually, after I was lucky enough to pick up a Stand Up from Vampire Academy and as  is in my living room place upstairs I thought maybe  I should make it to a book and movie room. It’s not the biggest space but we can work with it. So I want to collect more things for this room.  If it doesn’t happen now, I hope it does when I get my own house.
4. More Book Related Posters: This sort of goes with number #3. I need book poster for my book and movie room don’t I. I love posters and art work and after picking up a few on the weekend as well at supanova, it’s going to be awesome I hope.

5. Official Lord of the Rings Arwen Evenstar Pendant: I am a massive LotR (movie) fan. Sadley I haven;t read the books as I tried to read them when I was young but had so much trouble with it. Hopefully I can soon. Anyway I love Arwen and I adore her necklace so much, which also means that I would love to own one. I love the one from LOtR Jewelry.

6. More Harry Potter merchandise: I love anything and everything Harry Potter, so I want any merchandise that I can get if it’s fanmade or not. I already have a Ravenclaw tapestry, a few figurines, bages and few more stuff here and there but I want so many more things. I just love them to much.
7. My Book Related tattoo’s: Well in a couple of months I will be getting my first tattoo. I cannot wait till I am 18 so I can finally start getting my tattoo’s I am super excited and cannot wait.
8. Book Nook or a reading room: I have mentioned this a few times but I either want a book nook in the wall upon a window or a reading room. Even better both in one room.

9. Book Travels: I know I cannot own them, But I would love to go to the Harry Potter Studio Tour, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and to New Zealand for the Hobbiton Movie Set Tours.

10. Book Swag: I love book swag, bookmarks, buttons, cards just anything. I love collecting them all.

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

Thiago is ready to do anything to redeem himself and erase his past mistakes. When a mysterious woman intrudes on his private party in Monte Carlo, he is certain the universe has brought his polar opposite into his life as salvation. He is sunshine, she is moonlight; he is a bright star and she is a moonbeam.

Destiny takes the wheel, steering Kamari into Thiago’s orbit, but her open disdain and closely guarded heart warn her to stay away. Enchanted by her charms, Thiago is intent on melting her freezing barriers and tearing down the walls shielding her heart.

When Kamari agrees to help him save his future by being his fake girlfriend, the unexpected happens, triggered by a game of lies, secrets and desire.

As they plunge towards the finish line, the race veers offtrack and neither of them are ready to fall off the cliff.

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
